Guest guest
Here is an overview of Dr. Schwarzbein's diet: > " The *Schwarzbein* Principle " is more or less a modified low-carb diet > and -- like other carb-lowering plans -- it's seen its share of > controversy. The diet consists of plenty of protein and a lot of what > the plan calls " good " fats (Which you will note is quite similar to > The Atkins Diet.) It deletes processed foods, sugar (including > artificial sweeteners), and refined foods from your diet. You'll also > be saying goodbye to salt, alcohol, and caffeine. *What is the Food Like?* > Butter, eggs and a lot of meat will be the staples of your diet. Carbs > will be drastically reduced initially, but you will be able to add > more of them later on. Carbohydrates include many of the foods we've > been told for years are among the healthiest (e.g. grains, fruit, > particular vegetables, and reduced-fat dairy products). I believe Dr. Schwarzbein has written a number of books such as this one: " The *Schwarzbein Principle*: The Truth about Losing Weight, Being Healthy and Feeling Younger " <http://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/1558746803> There are some customer's review of this book here: " http://64.233.167.104/search?q=cache:DDGSI_hTPTUJ:www.amazon.ca/review/product/\ 1558746803%3FfilterBy%3DaddOneStar+%22Schwarzbein+Principle%22+%2Bquack & hl=en & ct\ =clnk & cd=5 & gl=us " Quite a few of them seemed to be negative. Here are a few negative quotes: First person: Quote: *WARNING -- Too Many Incorrect Biochemical Statements* " I was so disappointed to pay for a book that contains so many incorrect biochemical references. For example, p.22 states that " fats cannot be used for brain fuel. " [...] ketones (being incompletely burned fat) are a method by which we can get rid of unwanted fat without having to actually burn it off. This basic biochemical process (check any physiology/biochemistry text) is totally missed by the author. End of quote. Another person who reviewed the book: Quote: *Being taken in by a *quack*???*, Jan 16 2003 By *A Customer* Schwarzbein is not a board certified physician. She is not board certified in either internal medicine or endocrinology. Her claims of being an expert are suspect. Beware of quackery!! End of quote. Person three: Quote: *Verging on Quackery*, Mar 11 2003 By Buzz Haughton <http://www.amazon.ca/gp/pdp/profile/AI78HJTP4ES02> (, CA USA) - See all my reviews <http://www.amazon.ca/gp/cdp/member-reviews/AI78HJTP4ES02?ie=UTF8 & sort%5Fby=Most\ RecentReview> I was not impressed with this book, to say the least. First, I'm a type 1 diabetic, and the authors don't even deign to admit that folks like me exist. More important, though, is their dangerous advice to avoid all prescription drugs! Many of us depend on prescription drugs for our very lives; I use insulin, lovastatin for elevated cholesterol and lisinopril to arrest diabetic kidney complications. Reader beware! End of quote. Person four: *This program made me GAIN 10 lbs*, Feb 13 2000 By *A Customer* I followed this program very carefully and gained 10 lbs on it. Back to Weight Watchers for me. End of quote. Person five: Quote: *What am I doing wrong?*, Sep 8 1999 By *A Customer* I have faithfully followed this plan for over three months and have not lost any weight nor body fat. It is very discouraging... [...] End of quote. Person six: Quote: *not applicable to all people*, April 8 1999 By *A Customer* I have read this book and found that it does not really apply to everyone and can have negative effects on people who have certain medical problems. I do not recommend this book for certain types of eating disorders as it can cause tremendous weight gain. This diet plan does not work for everyone and should not claim to work for all people. Dr. Schwarzbein is an endriconologist who is not well versed in weight loss or certain medical problems... End of quote. I believe most or all of the quotes are 5 or 10 years old and I have no personal knowledge of Dr.Schwarzbein or her programs or books. But it seems strange that not a single person who reviewed the book had much of anything good to say about it. I believe they were all lay people; no doctors. There is at least a little smoke, so check it out to see if there's any fire. I have no personal knowledge or experience with Dr. Schwarzbein. > Schwarzbein also recommends not taking pre-set t4/t3 ratio replacement > hormones such as Armour. > I am on the Scwharzbein Principle Program to heal my adrenals. > > Sue

Guest guest
Whomever wrote that it¹s a modified low-carb diet is way off base. She actaully advocates A LOT of carbs‹more than I woulda thunk about 100-120 gr a day. But the need to be ³good carbs² --big difference between low carb and good carb. The ³Staples² are about equal amounts of carbs and protein and then good fats in small amounts and non starchy veggies ‹ I three of her books and none adovcate low carb at all she says low carb diets are damaging to the metabolism in the long run. Guest guest
Well read them LOL they are tryihg to lose weight quickly and it¹s not about that AT ALL. She states VERY CLEARLY it could ONE YEAR before you start to lose weight. It is a health plan not a quick weight loss. It¹s not low carb ‹ I swear to God ‹ I got in a HUGe fight with a friend who INSISTED I go low carb‹20 to 40 grams a day andi can¹t do that. Schwazbein reccommends approximately 100 to 120 gr of carbs a day and 70 to 120 gr of protein per day based on weight/activity. Guest guest
On Schwarzbein: The book is the outcome of these successes and the resulting research she has done in the past ten years. The emphasis is on healthy eating -- simple, unprocessed foods, and no stimulants (alcohol, caffeine, drugs). She discusses aging, cholesterol and fat (and why it is necessary to eat both), heart disease, eating disorders, and how to achieve a balanced diet. Another important aspect of her philosophy is that you stay on the diet and will either gain or lose until your body stabilizes at its optimum weight - bearing in mind that what you think is an optimum weight for you may not be what your body settles at. Dr. Schwarzbein believes that the ADA diet is killing diabetics. That isn't what the whole book is about, of course. She speaks out against the AMA and the FDA " food pyramid " . The book is geared toward women, but the principles are applicable to men as well. She discusses the " low-serotonin state " and the problems associated with it: depression, addiction, obesity. Dr. S. gives a wonderful, lay person description of insulin resistance its effect on the body.. The Schwarzbein Principle Cookbook is fabulous! I haven't yet tried anything that wasn't delicious! A daily menu looks like this: Breakfast: Scrambled eggs with nitrate-free sausauges, 2/3 cup oatmeal with butter and cream. Sliced tomatoes. Snack: 1/4 cup sunflower seeds Lunch: Cobb salad (made with chopped chicken, nitrate-free bacon, hard boiled egg, bleu cheese, salad greens and tomatoes). Olive-oil and vinegar dressing, 1 small apple. Snack: 1/4 cup almonds. String cheese. Dinner: Roast pork loin, 1/3 cup brown rice with butter. Asparagus with butter. Mixed-greens salad with tomatoes and cucumbers, tossed with olive-oil and vinegar dressing. Each meal and snack is designed to include no more than 15 grams of carbs on the healing program. This is based on 5 meals per day, so 75 gr of carbs per day. More carbs are allowed later as you heal.
