this article perfectly describes what happened to the resident at the group

home who just died. he went into myxadema coma after a Dx of pneumonia. AFAIK

was never given cortisol or thyroid hormone.

Hi, Marie. I hadn't intended to post further on this but Chuck happened

to reference the link below on another list:

http://www.aafp.org/afp/20001201/2485.html

This link discusses myxedema coma, which AFAIK is the stage of

hypothyroidism that one enters if sufficient T4/T3 are not obtained over

time. Note that the early stages may be relatively symptom free.

Best,

Did you diagnose the myxedema coma?

Who diagnosed myxedema coma? I was under the impression it tended to be

a long, drawn out process; not something that typically you would get

sick from and die within 3 or 4 days. But I don't know for sure...

it was the last month of his life. I do not know what he was Dxed with but I

know he never got thyroid meds. I googled congenital hypothyroidism and he had

every symptoms since birth. His Dx at the home was Downs syndrome (which is

iodine deficiency).
