Tell Senators Clinton and Schumer for New Yorker's and your state's Senators to make sure Money Follows the Person! On January 23rd, Senator Schumer signed on as a cosponsor of the "Money Follows the Person Act" (S 1394). This bill would establish demonstration programs in states, allowing people currently in nursing homes and other institutions to move into the community by using the money that is already being spent to fund their placement in the institution. Senator Clinton signed on as a cosponsor in November. New York is one of only two states with both of our Senators signed on to Money Follows the Person and MiCASSA (S 971). We should be proud of the work we have done and we should thank our senators for their support. There is, however, more to do. In order to pass the Money Follows the Person act and MiCASSA, the bills will need to go through committee and to the floor for a vote. We want to start pushing now for a committee hearing. If the bills don't pass this year, we'll have to start from scratch in 2005.
