Guest guest
Annette, There's a good book to read by Dr. Palmer that explains a lot about AIH. So many books don't do much more than mention it even if that. In Dr. Palmer's book it mentions that periods can stop at an early age and with no reason. This happened to me. Years before being diagnosed with AIH my periods slowed down to nothing and then stopped. I wasn't to worried about it as I had a Norplant inserted about that time and one of the side effects of this is either heavy bleeding or spotty to no bleeding. I just thought (and so did my doctor) that this was the explanation. Hind sight being what it is it was probably an indication of the AIH. Get Dr. Palmers book and read it. It's great. Hope this info helps. As always, mention this to your doctors. P.S. Welcome to the group.
Guest guest
Annette, I have had 2 different stretched of time that my period stopped for no apparent reason, one was for 6 months and one for 9 months (no baby)... Both times I was under a tremendous amount of physical stress with my AIH related problems. It came back and I never had any weird stuff happen. I can't even imagine a bilirubin of 25! The highest I ever got was 10 and I was ready to rip my skin off. Twenty five, they would have to put me in a straight jacket! Glad you found a smart Dr. in SF! Thakes care. Patty [ ] Prednisone & menstruation?? I'm new to the world of high, long-term doses of Prednisone and was wondering if anyone knows anything about possible effects on one's menstrual cycle? I'm all too familiar with low, short-term tx of prednisone due to life-long asthma. After being dx with AIH in June, I was put on 30mg of Pred & 50mg of Imuran and now 4 wks later am down to 15mg Pred & 75mg Imuran. Does this stuff mess with your period at all? Or could it just be the trauma that my liver has experienced that is messing with me? The AIH was discovered after I starting experiencing liver failure out of nowhere with no apparent cause. After my billirubin levels got to around 25 and my enzymes surpassed 2000, they started the work-up for a liver transplant. Fortunately I was transferred to an excellent hospital in San Francisco and diagnosed within days. As soon as they put me on my meds, my numbers started coming down. After 4 weeks I am down to a billirubin of 5 and enzymes in the 100s & 200s. What a close call! This is all new to me and seems so complicated. I had never even heard of AIH before this (nor had my mom who is a nurse). I am glad I found this group because all of you seem to have a lot of insight into this and other related diseases. Guest guest
Hello to all . . . It's been a while since I posted but this topic caught my attention . . . At the height of my first bout with liver failure I my billi count was 26. I had doctors coming in to look at me because they'd never seen a person with such high levels . . . I was sedated for practically a month because the itching was so INCREDIBLY HORRIBLE it was driving me insane!! Anyway, when I started out on prednisillone I was on 40 MG a day . . . after three months at this level I stopped having my period completely. I skipped three months . . .. then after dropping the dosage I started normal cycles again--well . . . for two months anyway--till I got pregnant! I know--a very risky thing to let happen--medically speaking . . . but a great result in the end. Guess my two cents worth is---don't take anything for granted!! My best to all !! Guest guest
Annette, I just picked up my pred refill from my new pharmacy... the monograph that the pharmacy provides with the scrip says that among the other side effects of pred it can affect menstruation...it just doesnt explain how. I can't answer from personal experience cause I had already had a hysterectomy before the AIH came along. nne > I'm new to the world of high, long-term doses of Prednisone and was > wondering if anyone knows anything about possible effects on one's > menstrual cycle? Guest guest
I am thinking that the billarubin levels have something to do with the changes in menstration. I have been on 80-50mg of prednisone over the past few months and have had absolutely no changes in my periods. My billarubin levels have been completely normal throughout all of my enzyme checks. Billarubin has never been high for me. Maybe there is some correlation...just a thought. Guest guest
Hi All, About the book. Please keep in mind that book is getting old. So many things in the medical field has changed. Be careful and try not to depend on the book because it may not give the answers for each individual. Depend on new information and listen to your doctors. When the docs don't give advice ask them questions until you feel comfortable. I call all of my docs when I need questions clarified. My period all my life has been horrible, awful backaches, cramps, and have also made me sick. I am now trying to get a hysterectomy, I hate this sick feeling all the time from it. I bleed so heavily I am now anemic and take Iron pills. I do believe that having any liver disease causes more problems. gayle/trans.6-99 galye@... @` \I/
Guest guest
Yep. Remember I have been transplanted so I have not had problems with my AIH in 4.5 years. My problems are now different but I have not been on Prednisone since the day before the transplant and took Medrol (another steriod, similar to prednisone) for six months after transplant. Now my immunosuppressant is Prograf which is an anti-rejection drug but it controls my AIH also. Guest guest
Yes! Extremely jaundiced. I was very close to getting a new liver, but they diagnosed me promptly and got me on meds right away that brought down the numbers by about 2-3 points every day. Somebody had mentioned a bilirubin of 40 or 50...that is frightening! Guest guest
Thank you all for the helpful info about your experiences. I mentioned it to the hepatologist and she said it could just be the stress on the body due to the liver problems. It's interesting that someone said effects on menstruation was listed on their medication as a possible side effect, because the most recent edition of the drug handbook that my mother uses doesn't even mention it. From what all of you have said, it sounds pretty normal to have messed up periods with AIH for whatever reason, so I won't worry about it. My main worry is just that I will become pregnant and not know it. I tend to be extremely fertile and have read that Imuran should not be used during pregnancy. > Annette, > I have had 2 different stretched of time that my period stopped for no > apparent reason, one was for 6 months and one for 9 months (no baby)...
