Goiters and the Great Lakes

Adding just a bit to what Chuck said, the name " Goiter Belt " was given to the

area around the Great Lakes because the soils there generally lacked the amount

of iodine needed to prevent goiters. So the root vegetables and other crops

grown for local consumption too often promoted goiters.

Today, when so much of your food (and their food) comes from outside the regions

where we live, that problem is probably minimal. But goiters can still emerge,

apparently, when our diets contain too little iodine.
