YOGA-TAI CHI- Water Excersise -- Very helpful

Our local MS chapter has a fund that was donated specifically for Water aerobic) not strenuous aerobic) classes.

The class is once a week at a local Y's that have proper facilities ie. parking, water temp.,qualified instructor, ramp & rails to hold. The fund was started and maintained by the family of a woman who had MS and believed the pool was the best excersise for MSers.

I never liked pools, but it is a wonderful workout, no overheating, can't get hurt falling, and alot of fun.

We also have a chair YOGA class. Our class was used to create a YOGA tape for people with all levels of disability and age.

I barely made it to class last year because I felt like @#$##@@ on the Rebif. This year with LDN, I only miss if there is a snow storm and class is cancelled.(how's that for a pat on the back)

Hi ,

What my wife and I started doing (before ldn), was to take a Tai-Chi class and have

continued doing so. It was helping me with balance and standing for a longer period

of time as well. Now (after & on ldn) balance is pretty much re-stored and am feeling

stronger and can stand longer. We also do plenty of stretching and range of motion

exercises very slowly and this is of benefit to me at least.

Take care and have a Great Day!

Jim

GINA-

I'VE BEEN WORKING WITH A PERSONAL TRAINER. STRETCHING IS SO

IMPORTANT. IT HELPS ESPECIALLY WITH MORNING STIFFNESS.

ALSO, I BOUGHT AN EXERCISE BALL - THE BEST THING I EVER

DID! IT'S FUN AND IMPROVES BALANCE, TRUNK STRENGTH, LOWER

BACK STRENGTH - LOVE IT. THE BALLS USUALLY COME WITH A

SHEET OF EXERCISES OR A VIDEO. THEN, ADD A THERABAND AND

WEIGHTS - 2 OR 3 REPS OF TEN. THIS ROUTINE HELPS ME A LOT -

BUT I HAVE TO KEEP MY NEPHEWS AWAY FROM THE BALL - AND MY

FATHER INSISTS ON BOUNCING IT AROUND THE HOUSE.

,

I was stiff before starting LDN last July and still am. I have had significant improvement with leg strength and urinary urgency and frequency but the stiffness remains.

I stretch a lot and do a lot of calisthenics and leg exercises. It helps a lot, the more the better. Sometimes it is hard to get started but the more I do the easier it gets.

Regards,

Tom

Hi ,

Welcome to the board. I do a lot of " stretching " exercises on the

floor---both legs and arms. I also use some weights, and swimming is great

if you have access to a pool. I also use my treadmill, when my legs permit,

and bicycles are great too.

Hope that has been some help.

Pam

Marcie,

Just checked my in box & found your mail. I appreciate that "fierce" is rather vague! Subjectively it seemed to fit somehow. Up to & incl.day 3 on LDN things were improving, unusually for me, I awoke

with a real sense of energy/vigour. Generally, I have to do hours of deep breathing practice to feel like

that! Anyway I seemed to go down hill from there: From all the checking out that I did prior to commencement, I understood that I might have some, possibly long, rough times before things stabilized, but by yesterday, I felt so fragile, delicate, weak, stiff & lacking in energy that eventually I

I decided to try a lower dose in case there might be a gentler way through! (This in itself is probably

progress for me as one of my weaknesses is a tendancy to go at things "like a bull at a gate"!)

I don`t know yet if cutting to 3mg. will improve things, I`m about to take my first 3mg. dose in a few minutes, when my meal has gone down a bit further! -It`s 1.30am here, I`m currently one of the semi-nocturnal ones!

Sorry to hear about your legs, seem to be heading the same way myself, -2 sticks (-canes?) at the moment. This is partly why I`m trying to stop the rot with rebounding etc!

Pleased to hear that you might go for the rebounder thing, I think you may be very glad if you do!

Apparently, you can pay several hundred $`s or even very much more for a good one. Doubtless these are very much better, but the one I have is a cheap sports one, less than £20 new.(I bought second hand for £10) To me this certainly seems good enough to find out whether or not it works for you: We hardly need something robust enough to bound us into the Olympics! -No holding bar on mine, so I

position it some where that gives me something to hold on to. eg.in front of the eliptical {-handles to hold!) or into an open doorway(door frame to hold) etc. etc.

In recent months, as part of my "use them before you loose them" leg campain, I have also bought a

cheap 2nd.hand exercise bike & a not so cheap new eliptical trainer. While both of these help to some

extent, I don`t find either of them either as efficacious or as pleasant/fun to do as rebounding which

gives a remarkably good return for even minimal energy investment.

May we all be well and happy!

`Bye!

Gerald

low dose naltrexone

Gerald, How did it seem fierce? I am PPMS and strted at 3mg for the 1st 3 months and have done 4.5mg for a little over a month now. I, personally, did not have any difference. As I've said before, I was so stiff to begin with that I can't blame LDN. Have you noticed improvement on the lower dose? I hope so! Thanks for the Rebounder info! I might be able to manage that somehow. It's worth a try anyway. About all that I can do is some stretching since I am practically paralyzed from the waiste down. Thanks! Have read your exercise query & some of the replies: I also value yoga primarily, I do some chi kung exercises & tai chi as well. In the last year, I have made 2 valuable additions to my routine: The first was a Chi Machine ( a Sun Ancon, the original one, with the patents!) It`s great for the whole body but especially valuable for my legs, loosening & energizing (oxygenating, & apparently helping lymph circulation...) You are completely passive, using it lying down, so It would also be a wonderful help to those who have little or no leg function left,....you just lie there, relax & feel good! I use it every day. -I haven`t tried the cheaper copies so I don`t know how they compare.- My second discovery is more active,( the Chi Machine really great but, being a passive exerciser, it loosens & frees up things but doesen`t actually strengthen or build muscle, as far as I can see.) -WHEREAS! .....REBOUNDING!.....on a rebounder! (a mini trampoline) ........I appreciate that this may sound really crazy to many with MS, but it`s not! Firstly, you can get rebounders with a hand bar to hold on to, next, your feet don`t even have to leave the surface for the rebounding to have a therapeutic effect Apparentally, the up & down movement, alternately increasing & decreasing the effect of gravity on the body, has very beneficial effects (again, including oxygenating, helping lymph circulation, as well as improved muscle tone & balance....) It`s said that, if one is physically unable to get onto a rebounder & rebound, even sitting on it & having someone else do the rebounding is beneficial! (NASA are said to regard rebounding as the best exercise yet developed.) Anyway, in my experience, so long as you start off sufficiently gently, rebounding leaves you feeling great! (- & very easily! -you don`t have to do so much that you buid up a sweat.) Hope the LDN Is working well for you, ......I`ve started the other end, have just done 8 days at 4.5 mg. Found that a little fierce! So am reducing to 3mg. Am wondering if being secondary progressive MS means that I am more fragile regarding LDN (as to so many other things!) -Would appreciate anyone`s feedback on this? Good luck! Be Happy! Gerald
