FDA Launches Consumer-friendly Drug Information Web Site (3/12/04)The Food and Drug Administration recently announced the launch of their new Web site designed to allow consumers and health care experts easy access to information about FDA-approved drugs, including prescription medications, some over-the-counter drugs and discontinued drugs.Located on the FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research (CDER) Web page, the searchable database known as Drugs@FDA is the first Web resource to provide an all-encompassing overview of a drug product's approval history, the agency said in a press release.Individuals also have the ability to search for therapeutic equivalents, including generics, of a specific drug using the online database. Drugs@FDA combines information from the CDER site, including consumer information sheets, medication guides and labeling information. In the future, the FDA said it plans to include information related to warnings, recalls and drug shortages."Better information for consumers and health care practitioners is one of this agency's top priorities," said FDA Commissioner Dr. Mark McClellan."Consumers, health care professionals and product developers will now be able to locate the complete profile of a product with just a few easy clicks."The site can be accessed athttp://www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/cder/drugsatfda.
