Guest guest
scroll down for iodism/bromide [Here are some notes from someone who attended the iodine conference last weekend. S/he asked that his/her name be withheld because s/he doe not have time now to answer any questions. Forwarded with permission. Zoe] Recent Advances in the Use of Iodine in Medical Practice Sponsored by Foundation for Care Management and the Institute for Healthy Aging Speakers: Guy Abraham, MD, Flechas, MD, Brownstein, MD, Bernard Eskin, MD, , MD, Shevin, MD, DHt, Glenn Ozalan NMD, Vimal Patel, RPh, CCN The highlights below are the notes of the reporter. Conference Highlights IODINE LOADING TEST ESSENTIAL TO DETECT POSSIBLE IODINE ABSORPTION DEFECT After thousands of Iodine Loading tests have been performed, it has become evident that a small percentage of people have an iodine absorption defect (NIS) which causes them to spill the iodine they take in the loading test dose into the urine. If these people are coming back with unexpectedly high percentages (e.g., 70 or higher) in the presence of probable thyroid disease, a history of breast disease or other iodine-related conditions, they must be followed closely and retested until the NIS absorption mechanism is repaired. These patients usually will get lower numbers as they start to absorb, then higher as their symptoms abate. Additional tests are being developed to help create a better iodine sufficiency profile. A spot test is being developed to look at iodine deficiency as a marker for breast cancer. NEW EMPHASIS ON ELIMINATING BROMIDE What used to be called Iodism appears to be bromide discharging from the tissues and causing acne, lethargy, odd taste, etc. Salting out the bromide is essential via taking much extra water with salt dissolved in it. The chloride is effective in detoxing bromide. One doctor used a " salt loading protocol " before starting iodine therapy. Dr. Flechas expects to have a new bromide test available shortly. TSH REPORTS/ T3/T4 The doctors stressed not relying on abnormal TSH labs for several months as they tend to be all over the place. Bromide release can sometimes lower T3 and T4 so some doctors may want to raise these dosages to make the patient comfortable. IODINE APPEARS TO WORK LIKE TAMOXIFEN ON THE ESTROGEN RECEPTORS Iodine suppresses the estrogen receptors. Iodine also has caused some HRT users to require more estrogen to keep menopausal symptoms under control. But it is illegal to suggest another substance to replace an approved drug. A CLINICAL TRIAL OF IODINE AS AN ADJUVANT THERAPY FOR BREAST CANCER PATIENTS IS PLANNED. CAN PATIENTS STOP IODINE ONCE THEY REACH SATURATION? No. In animals where they have withdrawn the iodine the disease returns. IODINE BINDS TO MERCURY AND HEAVY METALS WHICH GET EXCRETED THROUGH THE INTESTINES AND URINE. Some dentists are using iodine to detox mercury. FOR PATIENTS PRONE TO STOMACH UPSET FROM IODINE Some doctors prescribe iodine suppositories made up by a compounding pharmacy. DEPRESSION In one study 41% of attempted suicides admitted to the hospital had excessive bromide in their blood. ADRENALS Iodine appears to sensitize all the hormone receptors (except estrogen). Those taking Cortef may eventually require less. FEAR OF TAKING TOO MUCH? There are records of people taking " too much " with no apparent adverse effects. COMPANION NUTRIENTS? Vitamin B3 (niacinamide) has been added to the list of iodine companion nutrients. Some doctors recommend Inositol Hexanicotinate 625 mg twice a day has been given. Please check with your doctor for dosage. LOADING TEST INSTRUCTIONS Now discontinue iodine for 24 hours only. THYROID HORMONES Thyroid hormones decrease the absorption of iodine. This is why patients are told not to take thyroid meds 1-2 weeks before radioactive uptake studies. AUTISM There are reports from two practitioners (not present at the conference) that iodine improved some autistic patients. PCOS and FIBROIDS Iodine has helped these conditions either resolve or regress. SLEEP Iodine helps with pineal function and thus with sleep. IODINE LABS Doctor's Data is reportedly doing the test slightly differently than FFP or Abraham's lab with a different normal reference range. This needs to be investigated more by iodine clinicians and patients. BROMIDE OUTLAWED Dr. Flechas reported that Brazil outlawed bromide in wheat flour in 2000. PEPTO BISMOL Pepto Bismol will bind to iodine. Take something else if you have stomach problems. IODINE IN RATS Iodine in rats reversed dysplastic changes. Rats who had breast cancer tumors grafted onto them and were given iodine had small tumors. The rats who had no iodine had larger tumors. IODINE AND THE BRAIN Dr. Shevin showed an interesting video of a mentally handicapped young man who articulately described how his brain was able to retrieve information more efficiently. He said it was like the radio dial has found the right channel. GLAUCOMA Dr. Flechas reported a patient who has had reduced pressure in the eye measured after taking iodine. This makes perfect sense. The small percentage of people that actually pass the loading test must have something bizarre wrong with them, so we will treat them like everyone else that is deficient and give them more iodine, even though the test says they don't need it. At least this is consistent with their other advice designed to sell more Optimox. Chuck
