Guest guest
OK Once again I come to y'all for advice. My Neuro is very big it turns out on exercise nut I had to ASK him about it, some of my muscles are in atrophied and I'll be starting a gentle resistance programs for that. I did not ask about diet but I do believe what all here say of it's benefits. My problem is I can't just go on the swak diet, not cuz I don't think it's any good but I know I will not stick with it and there are others in the house to consider. I can't clean out the house of unwanted foods. A radical change insures failure. So the advice I need is how can I start this and work up to cleaning up my diet and improving it. What should go first? I eat a healthy American diet, but an American one, way too much meat and potatoes , Too much dairy, too much sugar, food additives, processed foods all the crap we are famous for in order to make dinner in ten minutes, know what I mean? I was once upon a time a vegan another time a veggie, but I can't go without the protein if I want these muscles back. So I am not looking for a big change but somewhere to start. what the most evil foods? Thank you ZilNever give up, never surrender
Guest guest
OK I will give it a go, sugar, well no problem have dome without it before I am using the evil slenda in my coffee but I am not sure it is as evil as they say. It is based on chlorine being bad for you and maybe it is, but I would think if it was that toxic pools would have dead professional swimmers floating about. Ever try to do fast butterfly swim and not drink half the pool? The health food store have stevia, might try that but it is costly. Dairy is going to be hard I eat yogurt every day use only butter no margarine. I was raised in WI Americans might get that... a dairy on every corner in the country, cows everywhere, we thought nothing of drinking raw milk. Cream by the glassful and cheese in every way! Amazing the whole state didn't have one big heart attack cuz of all that fat! Thought of popcorn and rice cakes right away to deal with the crunchy munchies. I bookmarked the best yet site and will study it. I'll start with junk and sugar and refined foods first will let ya know how it goes, I do have an unusual problem, do to the diabetes being so bad I tend to lose weight and I can't lose anymore very odd as I was once 300 lbs.but I have to be careful to keep my weight up, time to get out the blender and do the soy protein shake thang. I will bore y'alll with my progress, might join the best yet support group too, gonna need all the help I can get. thank you both very much ZilNever give up, never surrender
Guest guest
Dairy is the number one evil for me. When I cut out dairy my sinuses are much happier, my digestive tract functions better, I don't feel bloated and stuffed all the time. But I have never given up butter, rationalizing that the protein in dairy is our biggest concern and butter is nearly all fat. If you need help rationalizing a food just let me know! After the dairy I would suggest reducing the fatty meats, moving more toward fish and lean chicken. Last suggestion would be to try very seriously to reduce or eliminate the glutens - wheat, barley, etc. Very very difficult to accomplish this one, it's much easier to get rid of the dairy products. Zil, give yourself a break and try to work on one change at a time, for maybe a week or so, before you add another change. One of the easiest ways to "repair" your diet is to prepare your meals from fresh foods instead of using anything pre packaged. You can avoid a lot of additives that way... ----- Original Message ----- From: zillba@... low dose naltrexone Sent: Friday, April 09, 2004 1:27 PM Subject: Re: [low dose naltrexone] Evil foods OK Once again I come to y'all for advice. Guest guest
hi Zil, I'm on the Best bet Diet a year and there's not a hope I'd go back to eating the way I used. I understnad though that this will be hard for you and I do know the typical american diet ain't good but there is a lot of little things you could do I think. I started slowly on the diet and it has worked for me. Here in Ireland though we dont' eat as much processed food in general or as much sugar as americans..but it is getting worse. the first thing I eliminated before I was diagnsoed with MS was all junk food and processed food. When you think of it logically you are getting no good nutrients your body needs from processed or junk food. The way I see it now is what you eat is what you are and thing of everything you eat you eat to help give you energy and nutrients you need, and you need these more when you have MS as us MSer's lack in many nurtients and it's also known that we have a leaky gut which means many bad things are passing over to our blood brain barrier. We ahve to eat well to heal this leaky good and also to help nourish our bodies. For starters why not try and cut out all the processed foods and the junk and sugar. I know that probably sounds hard now but it's one of the most important things you could do and you should see increased energy levels from doing this alone. To do this you'll ahve to organise some healthy snacks so when you get the urge you eat something you shouldn't. I nearly always ahve some chopped carrots and celery in my fridge and I sometimes snack on these with some Mayo. I always have some fruit, like banana, apples, oranges and whatever else in season. Then other snacks I have are nuts and seeds (dont' over do it on these though as you may consume too much saturated fat). I also make popcorn but in a healthy way. I have a popcorn machine in the shape of a duck; it's electric and you don't use any oil or butter. When the popcorn is made I sometimes add a little drizzle of olive oil on top..this is healthier then using oil first in a pan as when oil is heated at very high temperature it turns to trans fats and this is a NO NO. If you suceed with this much maybe you'll realise how well diet works and you may look into eliminating all glutan, dairy, legumes and red meat too. If you need further reading check out http://www.ms- diet.org and http://www.direct-ms.org The other important thing with diet is taking vitamins and minerals aswell as some other supplements...but I really dont' see much point in someone spending money on supplements unless they are eating relatively healthy. TRy cut out all the sugar and alrificail sweeteners like aspartame that are known killers anyway and see how you go. I wish you the best with it. Guest guest
Hey Zil, I'll second 's advice on the sugars, but I'm under the impression you are already watching your sugar intake. The sugar substitutes are awful things to put in your body, if you can find a way to live without them you'll be doing yourself a huge favor. ----- Original Message ----- From: " " <@...> <low dose naltrexone > Sent: Friday, April 09, 2004 1:42 PM Subject: [low dose naltrexone] Re: Evil foods > hi Zil, > > I'm on the Best bet Diet a year and there's not a hope I'd go back to > eating the way I used. > I understnad though that this will be hard for you and I do know the > typical american diet ain't good but there is a lot of little things > you could do I think. > I started slowly on the diet and it has worked for me. Guest guest
OK Zil. . . it already sounds like you've been there before and know what to do, but I know it's easy to slide back into an unhealthy diet. My first move would be to cut out processed foods and foods high in saturated fats. . . and your next move might be to cut back on those sugars. Zil it's not any particular diet it's a way of life. Your biggest challenge will be to get your family to buy into it. I'll have to admit my teenage son doesn't adore his mom for the types of meals I prepare! lol From your post sounds like you already know about the "Best Bet MS Diet". Be determined, you can do it, I swear by it, it does make a difference! Best of luck. From: zillba@... Guest guest
HI SATURATED FAT IS AN ACQUIRED TASTE SO IF YOU WEAN YOURSELF OFF YOU WONT WANT IT AFTER ABOUT 3 OR 4 MONTHS. START COOKING WITH EXRA VIRGIN COLD PRESSED OLIVE OIL AND REFRIGERATE AFTER OPENING. ELIMINATE MARGARINE. IF YOU MUST A SMALL AMOUNT OF BUTTER. IF YOU DRINK WHOLE MILK GO TO 2 PERCENT THEN SKIM THEN SOY OR RICE. I'M TALKING GRADUAL HERE SO YOU WILL SUCCEED. NO CANNED FOODS. THEY HAVE ALUMINUM. NO GOOD FRESH FIRST BUT FROZEN VEGGIES ARE NEXT BEST CHOICE. TRY TO STAY OUT OF THE MIDDLE OF THE GROCERY STORE AND GO TO THE FIRST AND LAST AISLE. THAT IS USUALLY THE MEAT AND PRODUCE SECTION. IF YOU MUST HAVE RED MEAT TRIM FAT AND WEIGH 4 OZ. AND EAT MORE VEGGIES. EAT A SALAD ONCE A DAY AND SWITCH TO DARK BREAD IF YOU MUST HAVE IT. NO SOFT DRINKS. PHOSPHORIC ACID IS BAD. START WITH THESE THINGS AND ONCE YOU ATRE COMFORTABLE WITH THAT REFINE DIET MORE. Guest guest
Hi Zil I have been on the Dr. Roy Swank diet since last May. Then in July I found out that I have a lot of allergies to foods. So I eliminated them too. I started to drop weight like crazy. My husband was very concerned about how skinny I was getting. I was down to 120 pounds @ 5'4". I hadn't been that weight since I was first married. But now I am 60 years old. To tell you the truth, I liked that size but really didn't want to loose anymore. Then I seemed to stabilize. I have been 120 since last November. I am not as rigid on the Roy Swank diet now but there are foods that I will never eat again. I think that you will also find a weight and then stabilize at that weight. Good Luck Marie ----- Original Message ----- From: zillba@... low dose naltrexone Sent: Friday, April 09, 2004 5:16 PM Subject: Re: [low dose naltrexone] Re: Evil foods OK I will give it a go, sugar, well no problem have dome without it before I am using the evil slenda in my coffee but I am not sure it is as evil as they say. Guest guest
Zil, The most evil foods are: 1. Sugar....very evil!! 2. Dairy..... " " 3. Gluten....Maybe? It's hard to eliminate these all at once but it does make a big difference. The best way to identify what is evil for you is to have a blood test to see what specifically effects you. Take one at a time. I have a similar problem regarding the rest of the family. Regards, Tom
Guest guest
I have tried eating according to the different diet plans...but I did lose too much weight. I dropped to about 93 lbs, 5' 4''... and I am still fighting to regain that weight more than a year later. I really don't know how to eat anymore... I go back and forth between eating healthy and just wanting to try to gain weight. I just started back on Primal Defense, hoping that will help. Any tips from anyone on eating healthy but gaining weight??

Guest guest
Hey foono14, keeping and gaining weight the healthy way can be a real challenge especially if your not a big eater! Don't crash your plan buy porking out on cheesburgers and apple pie. If possible continue eating lean meats, vegies of all kinds and try bulking up on extra potaoes and whole wheat breads. If possible try eating 6 meals a day rather then only 3. Anoher good idea would be to drink lots of fruit juice, they have lots of calories, as well as beer and wine (in moderation) if your so inclind. It's a problem many people would love to have, but I can just imagine it's a challenge. Good luck! Guest guest
LAURA, I KNOW WHAT YOU MEAN ABOUT SCARING ZIL. WHEN I FIRST READ THE SWANK DIET BOOK FOR MS I WAS WONDERING WHAT CAN I EAT. I WAS SO MISERABLE WHEN MY HUSBAND AND I WOULD GO TO RESTAURANTS AND ALL I WOULD ORDER IS A GRILLED CHICKEN SALAD WITH SOME TYPE OF BLAND DRESSING. HA! NOW I THINK IT'S HILARIOUS BECAUSE IT IS REALLY NO BIG DEAL IN THE WHOLE SCHEME OF THINGS AND NOW IT IS THE DIET WHICH IS PRETTY MUCH ADVOCATED FOR EVERYONE WHO WANTS TO REMAIN FIT AND HEALTHY. OH WELL LIFE IS ABOUT CHANGE AND I STILL HAVE MY PIZZA ONCE A MONTH AND WHEN I DO I EAT THE WHOLE PIE! IN A MONTH OR SO WE CAN TELL ZIL THE OTHER TWO THIRDS OF THE AMERICAN DIET SHE MUST ELIMINATE.
