Guest guest
Well I was on MTX first. It didn't help and caused me terrible side effects. Then on to Plaquenil. That helped for a few years but not as much anymore. Now on Arava with the Plaquenil and not getting enough relief. Have visible swelling and a lot of pain. My doc said we will be on to Enbrel now. So I will be getting on it in a few months. Would be sooner but that was my choice since I will be out of town for a while. If you are unsure about your doc and his/her decisions then I would definitly go for a second opinion. Best of luck to you. I have had this almost 4 years and have never been pain free but have heard of people who have. > > hi group. > > I just want to know when is it time start biologics? I know you have to fail two dmards..But what do they consider failer? concrete evidence like x ray damage or worsening of lab work..or..My opionion that I am not getting enough relief?? > > I have rheumatoid factor positive RA.started treatment may 2008.I have been on a rollar coaster..I have been on oral mtx.than plaquanil and arava. arava was causing side effects..so, I went back to injectable mtx with the plaquanil..I am still having considarble amount of flares..when I start to notice some improvement than a flare comes on like every other month..but now I have been on the injectable mtx for 12 weeks and flare for 4 to 6 weeks.I just dont feel good and in pAIN..AND THE LAST TIME HE SAW ME HE SAID MY RA WAS MANGEABLE. than why havent I been painfree within this last year but only a few weeks.. > > Any thoughts would greatly be appreciated. > > diane in ohio >
Guest guest
Hi Diane: I am sorry to read you are hurting so bad, and that you are having many flares. I have had RA for 6 years, and finally got the right " cocktail " of meds. I am pain free most of the time, and my flares are farther apart, and don't last long. I take MTX in inject. form, Sulfasalazine, Placquenil, and Prednisone. I have been on the Pred. from day one, and will never be off it. I have tried many times to get off the Pred., but the pain and swelling return and I end up almost in a wheelchair. So for me, these meds are perfect, and I have my life back. My worst complaint is the tiredness, so I give in to it. I rest a lot, and lie down each afternoon to either have a nap or just rest. My Rheumy insisted this for me. I hope you find the right meds. that work for you so you can get some much needed relief from your pain and suffering. Wishing you pain free days ahead. Hugs, Barbara > > Well I was on MTX first. Guest guest
In my case, it was when MTX and Arava caused my white blood cell to get too low. I was glad to fail at those two, so that I could get to the good stuff, Enbrel. Guest guest
Your insurance company is better than mine, then. It's some insurance companies that require failure at two DMARD's before approving a biologic. They don't want to pay the big bucks. Guest guest
Hi Diane: I was sorry to read how much pain and suffering you are having. I suggest that you search for a new Rheumy and get a second opinion. Your current Dr. doesn't seem to care about you, or how bad you are suffering or willing to get you the right meds. You owe it to yourself to find a better dr. That is what you deserve. A lot of people here have had to do that. Once you find the right Rheumy, and get the right " cocktail " of meds. for your RA, you will start to feel better. I have said many times pain is very wearing on us, and hard to function each day with it. Wishing you great success in your search. I am also praying for you to have many pain free days ahead. There is always hope to be pain free. I am except for the bad knee that I will have replaced this Tuesday. Since I found my " cocktail " of the right meds. for me, my flares are shorter in duration, and much longer in between. I wish the same for you. Take care, and rest when you can.
