I was diagnosed with hepatitis c in 1994. it is believed that I

contracted it in 1977 during a blood transfusion. I've been in

relatively good health except for the all-too-common fatigue which

seems to plague us all and I learned to live with that. I have my

liver function tests done every 8 weeks at the insistence of my

heptologist and they have been consistently normal. Now for the

question at hand. In the past year I have suffered 2 heart attacks

caused by vasospasm. I have also been diagnosed with reflux, diabetes

and arthitis. My triglycerides have also been periodically high. it

seems that i read that when HCV acts up it sometimes can cause

fluctuations in your blood glucose and triglyceride levels. It seems

to me that for all these problems to have suddenly appeared in the

space of one year that the hcv had to have something to do with it.

But the gp insists that since my LFTs are normal that this can't be

the problem and unless I come up with the proof she's going to

continue to insist on treating me for the diabetes and triglycerides

with drugs. I don't want to stress my liver so I've been putting her

off. She thinks I'm crazy and I'm frustrated. Does anyone know any

information concerning the relationship of triglyceride levels and

blood glucose levels to HCV? I know I'm not crazy-I read this

somewhere but I can't find the proof.Help!

Unless I am misinterpreting what you've said, you have never had a

liver biopsy done, and your doctor is only going by your liver

function tests, which have been normal. You need a new GI doctor

ASAP. Your liver function tests are no guide for what is actually

going on in your liver. The plain truth is that you could have

cirrhosis, could even have already had cirrhosis back in 1994 when

you were diagnosed, and STILL have normal LFT's. You need to have a

liver biopsy done. That is the only way to know what condition your

liver is in. HCV can be the cause or a contributing factor in the

conditions you have developed, but even if HCV is or is not the cause

those conditions do need treatment. But FIRST you need a liver

biopsy! Forget about even trying to find 'proof' of anything for this

doctor. What you need is a doctor who is an expert on HCV and will do

the proper screening tests which you need. Then you should see

doctors who specialize in the various disorders you have developed -

and hopefully ones who are familiar with HCV. Your GP needs to refer

you to SPECIALISTS. The fact that you have a liver disease can be a

complicating factor in the treatment of some disorders, and this is

really beyond the scope of a GP - at least initially. SEE

SPECIALISTS. Insist on it! And get a liver biopsy done. It is really

important that you find out what condition your liver is in.

Good luck!
