It strikes the voluntary muscles, and usually begins in the legs. Initial symptoms may include difficulty with balance, weakness and stiffness in the legs, muscle spasms, and dragging the toes while walking. Occasionally PLS may begin in the tongue or hands. In the tongue, the initial symptom is slurring of words.
