Vials of anthrax vaccine found in Copperas Cove

Emergency crews are trying to figure how several vials filled with the anthrax vaccine ended up in the 400 block on on Avenue in Copperas Cove.

The vials were found sitting along the road.

They were broken and police believe they may have been run over by a car.

Officer called in the hazmat team to make sure it wasn't hazardous, but after investigating, the team determined they did not need to quarantine the area.

Killeen’s Fire Chief, Jerry Gardner, said, "The Department of Homeland Defense and the health agency were contacted and they advised there was no risk at all to exposure. There is a miniscule amount of live virus in the vaccine and exposure to air is going to kill the virus immediately"

Officers say there were also vials of hepatitis b and botulism.

Killeen Fire Chief Jerry Gardner says usually the County Department of Health or military personal would be the only people who would carry these types of vaccines.

The vials are being turned over to the FBI, who will investigate where they came from.
