Guest guest
Hi, Gordon, Re 1, the answer is yes. I had to have a blood test for an allergen because Xolair can affect the skin test results. Cheryl ----- Original Message ----- From: Gordon Bear<mailto:gbear@...> <mailto: > Sent: Thursday, March 24, 2005 5:21 PM Subject: [ ] Effect of Xolair on Allergy Tests My asthmatic friend Kathy visited a new doctor yesterday, an allergist who tested her via skin pricks for allergies to all kinds of stuff. Big surprise: A few things that had provoked a reaction in testing a few months ago - notably cat hair - provoked no reaction at all this time. She had told the doctor about her injections of Xolair, which started last September, but he didn't say whether the Xolair could have caused this change. I checked the Website for Xolair (www.xolair.com) and can find nothing about the effect of the drug on allergy tests, so I am asking the good people in this group: 1. Does Xolair change a patient's reactions to skin tests for allergens? 2. If so, is the lack of reaction to a substance that previously provoked a reaction simply a change in the response to the test (i.e., a false negative), or does it indicate a true absence of allergy to that substance (i.e., a remission of that allergy)? It would be great news if Kathy were now really free of allergy to cats! Thank you for your help, good people, and best wishes with your own issues. Guest guest
Gordon, I have been on Xolair for three months. About a week my wife and I were walking through the neighborhood and one the neighbor's dogs came up to me. I decided to test my reaction to its saliva. The dog licked my arms several times, and amazingly, I had no reactions, not even an itchy feeling. Prior to Xolair I would have broken out in hives wherever the dog licked me. I am thinking that skin allergies are probably the first thing to go with the Xolair treatments. This stuff is truly a Godsend! Guest guest
Would not the xolair also affect the blood test by soaking up the free floating IGE? > > Hi, Gordon, > Re 1, the answer is yes. Guest guest
My doctor told me that there is no test they can give us in the doctor's office for IgE that will separate the free-floating from the already Xolair-bound IgE - so basically if you get an IgE score of 700 while on Xolair, there's no way to tell how much is already bound. He did say that Genentech can do it in the research lab, but it's too hard or too expensive or both at this point, so they don't have a test yet that can be used on a broader basis. Guest guest
I wondered about that, but they said no. Of course, they could just be covering up for not knowing by lying. Medical people do that often. ----- Original Message ----- From: aramo2811<mailto:aramar@...> <mailto: > Sent: Monday, March 28, 2005 9:40 AM Subject: [ ] Re: Effect of Xolair on Allergy Tests Would not the xolair also affect the blood test by soaking up the free floating IGE? > > Hi, Gordon, > Re 1, the answer is yes.
