Guest guest
The medical standard is that oral steroids should be taken in the morning (before or at breakfast time) because of the timing of the adrenal glands normally producing cortisol. The adrenal glands will produced less or not produce cortisol when one is on prednisone for more than a few days, so it's generally understood that there will be less interference with adrenal function and fewer side effects if one takes pred in the morning. That said, prednisone doesn't last 24 hours. I had one allergist who told me to take 10mg three times a day when I needed pred for three days. I've taken up to 40mg in the am and another 10 or 15 at night if I'm at trouble, but it does mess with tapering off it. In the last couple of years I've started taking 2 puffs of Advair 500 at night rather than take extra oral prednisone. THat seems to help. Of course, that also means I get an extra dose of serevent, which may help as well. I would recommend anyone consult his/her doctor before taking medicine " off label " or in different quantities or times as prescribed. Guest guest
It's nice to know about the adrenal gland and why you should take it during the day..the reason I always wanted to take it during the day is because it tended to mess with my sleep patterns and with being sick that is the last thing you need to be is sleep deprived. So taking it first thing in the morning was the best so by the end of the day it was pretty well gone. Though at the moment I am taking half a dose a day in the am and the other later in the afternoon, so I have all day protection. I just make sure the lower dose is the evening dose and that I take it around 4-5 in the afternoon so it doesnt affect night time overly much. Thanks for everyones input on this site, it is EXTREMELY helpful. --- In , " ronaldcrpntr " <cowtrail@c...> wrote: > Has anyone noticed if there was any difference in functioning, depending on what time of > day you take your Prednisone, morning or evening? > Ron
Guest guest
Same here. I once did split-day dosing but that just made the side effects worse (the puffy knee syndome) Alternate day dosing (a big one day 1 and less day 2) has also been done. I did it for a while but it is rougher on the old body.... __________________________________________________
