I got mine today. My family doctor gave it to me because I am now

diabetic too. My wife won't be able to get one because she does not

have any major health problems.

I got the shot last year and a month later got the flu. I have been

getting a shot every year since they first started giving them. This

was my first case of flu in 20 years.

My mother in law (who lives with us) and my wife did not get the shot

last year. Mother in law got the flu, the wife didn't.

You really can't tell about these flu bugs. sigh!

There are no flu shots in Texas; our congressmen got them

all...seriously...we have folks waiting hours in line trying to get a

shot and some of our state reps who DO NOT meet the criteria got

freebie shots from the Congressional physician AFTER the shortage was

announced. Our state attorney general has just filed suit against some

flu vaccine distributors who upped the charge for a vial of vaccine

from $60/vial to $800/vial. Meanwhile I have six doctors in two cities

trying to locate flu vaccine for me all with no luck at all. Makes you

wonder aobut folks sometimes.

Oh well, enough ranting. If you have the chance to get a shot, do

so...it is very important.

Pandora,

Here in Arkansas, they are only giving them to elderly and people

like me who have chronic health problems like asthma and diabetes.

Both my Family doctor and my allergist ORDERED me to get one. Both

had them available in their office.

My wife can't get one because she does not have a chronic health

problem. I have asthma AND diabetes.

Are they NOT giving them to people who have chronic health problems

in Texas?

I have pretty much decided not to get one, since I did not end up

with an infection this past weekend when I had symptoms (when I

didn't have my Xolair). If there is still vaccine available in

December, I'll probably get one, but I do not have children and I

think I am stronger now and less likely to get sick (esp not taking

pred), and I don't want to take a shot from msomeone who needs it

worse.

Doug,

They are giving them to people with chronic health problems in Texas -- my

Mom just got hers in San this past week.

Pandora,

If you're anywhere near SA, you might try there. I know they're hard to find

in Houston. Lines are bad everywhere. Good for AG Greg Abbot (although it's

probably a political move) for filing suit against the price gougers! And I

am really steamed too, at the congresscritters who rushed to get illegal flu

shots instead of saving them for their at-risk constituents, and talk about

getting drugs from Canada as though it's some sort of dangerous endeavor.

It's Canada, not some Third World country. They buy their drugs from the

same manufacturers we do (they just pay a heck of a lot less), and they have

quality controls.

I am in the Houston area, and my specialty doctors in the Texas

Medical Center in Houston can't get their hands on any vaccine at all,

nor can the specialists I saw when I lived in Austin. Rumor had it

that there was vaccine in some small towns in East Texas, but that

disappeared also...I am definitely on the " must have " list; I know

they are checking in San for extra vaccine, but so far no

vials are turning up. It is early in the season, so technically there

is time, and there are some strong anti-viral medications which you

can take in the first 24 hours or so that can help short cut the flu.

As most of you know from being on prednisone, the thing that helps the

most is being scrupulous about washing your hands after touching

ANYTHING in a public place...if you have touched anything that other

folks have touched, you just need to wash with soap and water before

you bring your hands anywhere near your face...

I hope everyone finds their flu shot by year's end<vbg>
