Guest guest
Morning all! I'm sorry if it seems as though I'd disappeared. I just got home late yesterday afternoon from a hospital stay. Seems a URI that had JUST started caused a flare up. I went to bed with a tickle in my chest sat night (I'd had the tickle for 2 days but it didn't seem to be affecting my breathing and I wasn't bringing anything up), nothing more, and then woke up at 4am tight, wheezing, coughing and short of breath. I used my neb x 2 (once with albuterol/atrovent, once just albuterol) and after the second treatment, my peak flow was BARELY 150. I knew that it was beyond anything I could do for it at home and needed help so I went to the ER. I didn't feel as though I was necessarily losing oxygen so I thought they'd patch me up with 125 of Solu-medrol and send me home with an increase in my prednisone and an antibiotic. No such luck. Whatever bug caused the URI... it wasn't letting up that easy. After Magnesium sulfate IV, 125 of Solu-medrol and 4 neb treatments I was still wheezing loudly, coughing junk up and a little tight. My oxygen stayed up pretty well all things considered, it never got lower than 93 and after each treatment bounced back up to 97 without added oxygen. I DID have a raging fever... for me anyway. I usually run about 97.4 (it's right in my record so that they know 99 isn't just a (tiny fever) for me, and it was 101.3 No pneumonia this time, seems that it really hadn't even had much of a chance to become full blown bronchitis and they weren't going to let it, LOL I guess my lungs just knew this one was going to be nasty and set off a full alert. Normally I'd have tried another neb before going to the ER, but I know my body and a peak flow of under 250 means I'm not going to be able to handle it without solu-medrol. 150 made me stand right up and tell my boyfriend that I had to go. Asthma doc has been contacted by my PC and I see them both in a week. I'm still waiting to hear about my Xolair approval, but I do know my application was submitted already. I really hope I'm approved, I hate what happened to me the other night, and that was a MILD incident. The sent me home on 60 mg of prednisone, levaquin, some UNREAL cough syrup that I think should be illegal, LOL! It's cough syrup with percocet and it's extended release. I thought the pharmacy made a mistake! It said 1/2 teaspoon every 8 hours. I m of course thinking of cough syrup with codeine and that such a small dose would do nothing. Thank God I called the pharmacy and they told me what it was and why it was dosed like that. I took it last night and about 4 hours later it felt like the percocet part was wearing off. Then BAM, the extended release part kicked in and knocked me on my butt, LOL! Taking my usual meds, plus a small maintenance dose of klonipin as well. I think they re afraid if I have any stress or anxiety I'm going to flare again. I was promised that I only have to take the klonipin until I see my doc next tues. I was also told to take advil if I need it. It seems that I pulled some muscles and possibly pinched a nerve during one of the initial coughing fits Sat night. I genuinely hope everyone else is well. I'm going to head back to bed but wanted to check in first. I've gotten private e-mails from several of you and didn't want anyone worrying that they hadn't heard back. My boyfriend got me a pure ion uv air purifier and put it in the bedroom. I cant' even think of what it cost him, but he did it to try to help me get better and to prevent future attacks. He said to stay in my room all day in bed with a good movie and a knitting project. Now THAT sounds like a plan of recovery I can handle! Of course, this cough syrup might prevent even stitches, so I think for now I'll stick to the movie, LOL! Sorry so long winded, but as I'm going to bed, I didn't want to leave any ground uncovered and questions in your heads! God Bless everyone, breathe easy, and I'll check back in when I'm feeling a little less run down. Thanks so much for all the kindness. I've made some wonderful friends through here already, and it's amazing to finally have a place to go where people have been where I am! Hugs! Guest guest
- Wow! I am glad you went in to the ER but sorry you were having such trouble. You got MUCH better treatment than I got on my last ER visit (18 months ago thanks to Xolair) - they wouldn't treat me at all because my oxygen level was so high - and you could hear the wheezing and I was coughing up junk, etc. I'm surprised your asthma doc didn't tell you to come in today, tomorrow at the latest. Mine will find a way to see me within 48 hours and if not my PCP will - they are across the hall from each other and have various agreements about me. Does your asthma doc know about the percocet in the cough syrup. Mine will not give me anything stronger than the cough syrup with hydrocodone and doesn't want me on percocet b/c it relaxes my system too much and I can't tell when I am getting into trouble. Please post over the weekend and let us know how you are doing. Also, please let us know when you get your Xolair approval...I hope it is soon!
