Guest guest
> > Anyone experience Lumbar spine fusion ? L4-S1 (2 level) > Yeah. Fused from the bottom of my cervical down to the sacral. First was 5 years ago, second was one year ago. First one provided about 45 minutes of relief, then the hardware started to break down, screws " shadowed " and " windshielded " . Last year's replaced most of the broken metal and also included surgery through my intestines to fuse a cadaver thigh bone anteriorally on my spine. Lots of the old hardware was left in because it was " too difficult to get out " . I don't know what your circumstances are, but I was 30 years old at the time of my first surgery and was told I had the back of am 80 year old man. I was repeatedly told " you have a choice, it's up to you " , but in reality I had no choice. I now have the back of a 79 year old man. Good luck. Please email me if you have ANY questions. Guest guest
I just had a Posterior single leval Lumbar Spine Fusion on the 29th of December. I was in the hospital for 5 days and was sent home with a back brace, a thing to pick stuff up off the ground and a weight limit of 5 lbs. I'm not to bend over, twist or reach for anything. I can sit in a chair with a high back and arms for 20 minutes at a time or rest in bed with a pillow between my legs and behind my back. I'm to do several small walks during a day which they modified to one walk around a mall a day since I live in MN where there is snow and do not have a lot of space in the home to move about. Walking has been going well though sometimes I am tired and have back pain afterwords, they told me to just take pain meds before I go. What I am worried about is that I'm doing well enough that I have to remind myself to ease myself down into a chair, not to twist, or bend or reach for anything. And I often find I've sat for longer than 20 minutes. I am used to pain being my guide and I am not on much for pain relief so I dont think its masking it too much (50mg of Tramadol 3x daily). Am I going to be ok slipping up? I'm trying my best but when I accedently overdo it or forget to put my back brace back on before using the bathroom (it traps my pants and I cant pull them down unless I remove it) or forget something I worry that my fuse wont take properly. Please tell me there is a little leeway in this. I really want to get this right. " Without rabbits a rabbits foot would be nothing but a disembodied hand full of unidentified toes. Guest guest
- I hope you are doing well! It sounds like you have everything in hand! I am no doctor, and if you are really concerned about this call your doctor, they answer these questions all the time! But, the reason for not twisting and bending is so you will not mess up the fusion while the bone forms beneath the hardware they put in, and so the muscle, nerves and tissue around it that were severed during the surgery can heal completely and solidly around the fusion. The hardware they put in protects your spinal column so that is really not at risk with " mistakes " . The back brace also is there to keep the area from moving, and to remind you to not do the twisting, bending and lifting (which causes compression of the spine). So the short answer is because you are afraid of making a mistake, you will moist likely not make any major mistake that could cause harm. If you twist or bend, or sit too long occasionally I believe it is expected as we are not perfect. If it were critical we not bend, twist, or lift at all, then they would put us in a body cast until we were healed after fusion surgery - or else the docs would be getting sued all over the place!! LOL Hoping for pain free and healthy days ahead! mark ________________________________ From: Bunny <christina_bunny@...> spinal problems Sent: Wed, January 12, 2011 7:48:58 PM Subject: RE: Lumbar Spine Fusion I just had a Posterior single leval Lumbar Spine Fusion on the 29th of December. Guest guest
Thanks Mark, what you said makes a lot of sense. I'm going to just get my rest and do my best to follow what they outlined in the book and not stress over it too much untill my 6 week follow up. I just really want to get this right. i've been in so much pain for years and i really feel like I have a chance to break the cycle with this if I can get right on the PT after and restrengthen my core and learn good posture.
