Guest guest
You are describing in impingement problem which does not relate to stability. Stability means that there is no slippage of the vertebrate. When you turn your neck a certain way, bone spurs or a herniation etc is impingeing upon a nerve root hence the numbness. Deb RN From: spinal problems [mailto:spinal problems ] On Behalf Of citi_sue Sent: Tuesday, December 09, 2008 12:04 AM spinal problems Subject: For one reason or another ___________ I don't think I am getting accurate information from surgeons for one reason or another.... So I was wondering if anybody else that has had neck surguries (or problems) has or has had this problem. They tell me that my neck is stable, but some days, like today, if I move my head to one side.... instant numb shoulder and upper arm.... move my head back upright..... not numb. Move my head again..numb..upright again..not numb. Get the picture?? To me it doesn't seem that my neck would be stable if it does this. I've had this problem off and on for almost a year. But some days it doesn't do it at all. Some days it's REALLY bad. And I have the similiar thing with my back. Only similiar though. I have a perment numb big toe, top of my foot and shin from my herniated disc in my back that was operated on last year.(twice) And activity such as walking or sometimes just sitting, will make the numbness worse and sometimes pain along with the numbness. I just don't understand why the doctors usually act like I didn't even say anything to them when I tell them about this. Like I was talking to a wall. This doesn't come from my PCP, just the surgeons. I was just wondering if others with similiar neck and/or back problems have this same thing happen to them. I guess I'm trying to find out if this is normal or not, or is indicitive of a problem.... I'm just dumbfounded and confused. Sue
Guest guest
Deb, Thank you for the info.............my guess is that I probably have bone spurs or something like that then. It sure is a " pain in the neck " ! LOL Hey.. how have you been doing/feeling lately? Okay I hope. I am still in pool therapy, and it is going " okay " . It is amazing at how HEAVY the body feels when I get out of the pool! I guess that shows exactly how weak I really am. Well, you take care, and I do hope you are doing good, as much as we can anyways. Godd bless you. Sue ` > > You are describing in impingement problem which does not relate to > stability. Guest guest
Hi Sue, I don't know how long it's been since youhad your surgery, but scar tissue buildup is an inevitable consequence of surgery and scar tissue can entrap nerves while it forms. This CAN cause some of your symptoms. I would strongly suggest that you seek out a Fellowship Traied Pain Management Doctor. Not only can they help treat the pain, they must diagnose where the pain is coming from. My pain physicians have been invaluable to the diagnosis and treatment of my pain over the last two years. It made all the difference after having been horizontal for 18 months. in Oregon

Move my head again..numb..upright again..not numb. Get the picture?? Sue- I used to lift both of my arms out in front of me and they would both go numb. When I shared this with the NP, he said not to do it, I was making it worse. My pain gets worse upon rotation, when I swivel my neck to the right side. I also have worse pain when I bend my head backwards. The PA said it was my facet joint. I'm so glad you mentioned the big toe. I have recently, this is the latest symptom, had sharp stinging pain in my right big toe. It is the wierdest thing. Before that, my leg, one or the other, goes completely numb with no feeling at all, after standing up and walking or doing something for awhile upright. The first symptom I had that things were getting worse in my neck was a stabbing pain in my elbow. I couldn't believe it. I looked at my elbow in amazement, it felt like someone was stabbing it with a knife, and yet I was looking at it and it looked perfectly fine, normal. I think sometimes the doctors are making a mental notation that we've gone to the next level of verification, or that what we have communicated puts us on a different tract for treatment, and they jump into implementing that mode. They don't always update us on what is going on. I think I will ask a lot more questions when I start getting medical care again. in Oregon
Guest guest
You are welcome as well . I try to keep myself humbled and open to using the knowledge God has allowed me to gain...so I can help others. I am happy to do it. The healthcare system is frustrating...especially when you deal with a chronic pain issue. --- --- <wendy.tom@...> wrote: > > Its really nice of you to share your knowledge and > expertise with the rest of us. Guest guest
Hi , I had my surgery in April 2004.....And I'm kind of embarrased that I do not remember what kind of surgery I had other than I was fused with titanium plates, screws, & rods @ C 3-4, 4-5, 5-6. I remembere a little of what was wrong... stenosis that was pretty bad and starting to compromise my spinal cord. Herniated disc at 5-6, and between one two of my discs, they just weren't connected to eachother any more. , when I saw the x-ray it was scary.... it was taken with me holding my head forward, (at the center of my neck) the top half my neck tilted forward, but the bottom half was straight. I don't know what the medical term for that is?? Does it have one?? I don't know how to explain it better. I also had paracenteral protrusions. Gosh I wish I could remember more. My memory isn't what it used to be at all. discectomy--laminectomy, those come to mind. The stenosis I have right now at C 2-3 is pretty bad too I know I have problems with the Facets at that level also. I wish my husband was here, he keeps good track of that stuff for me and has all of my mri cd's put away somewhere. Maybe I can download that later, and you could take a look at it or post the mri report or something. Can those be downloaded onto this site? And I have to say and , I think the help you guys give us is admirable, and I do appreciate it to no end. And the answers you guys give.... its like you read our minds for exactly what kind of, or how much information we are looking for that we don't get from our doctors. I would like to gather the proper information and post it to you at a later time if you don't mind... or did I give you enough? Sorry if this is scattered, I haven't had any sleep since about 6am yesterday. Don't know how, but I managed to make it to pool therapy! I will talk to you later. Sleepless in Michigan ha ha ha Sue. > > > I don't think I am getting accurate information from > > surgeons for one > > reason or another.... Guest guest
Hi , I do like the pool therapy a lot, and for all the trouble I have had with it on some days, I can tell a difference already. Last night was when I really noticed that it was making a difference in my strength. I was going down the stairs to the basement then I suddenly realized that my legs were not shaking from my weakness.... I was rarely going down the steps for that reason because it felt so unsafe and my husband had me promise that I would not do the steps when he wasn't home. Here I thought that pool therapy would be so easy... but it is a lot of work doing just the simple things. I go twice a week, they were going to change to once a week because of the different problems I was having, but right now it seems to be working out okay. I wouldn't mind if they changed it to 3 times a week. But they are not going to do that until my problems from it decrease.... Yeah, I'll be sticking with it. Take care , have a good day.
