Guest guest
Doctor told me to get in one of these groups to get advice. I am going to have fusion also from what the MRI shows, I have 3 discs pushing outward on my spinal cord. Have had 2 opinions from specialists and surgery is number one promotion. They want to take out 2 discs and replace them with a spacer(?) and fuse the bones together. These are C3/4/5. I am going to try therapy and am on pain killers now. I want to know if anyone else have had surgery on the back. What can I expect? Surgeon is giving me 95% in feeling better than what I am. I am beginning to lose feelings in my left arm...having numbness, tingling, and annoying pain.

Guest guest
In 2002 I had fusion surgery at the L4, L5 and S1 levels. It failed and I am now facing having the surgery re-done and having spacers implanted between the L4-L5 and L5-S1 vertebrae. My suggestion is to exhaust all conservative therapies before jumping into surgery. The surgery I had in 2002 had an 85% success rate but I was one of the other 15%. I do feel better than I did before the initial surgery but the fusion was unsuccessful and no one's sure why - I don't smoke, I've stayed as active as possible and I'm reasonably young (ok, I'm 35) and healthy. Dig aroung on the internet and see what you can find. Maybe there's a less invasive procedure that would help. Cheryl > Doctor told me to get in one of these groups to get advice. Guest guest
I am nine months post my L5-S1 fusion surgery. For me, it was what I needed. I still have pain, but now it is manageable. Before, it wasn't. I'm 42 and have 3 young children. I needed to be able to get around. My advise, unsolicited I know, is to go in knowing you won't be " perfect " . There will still be pain, but it IS going to be better than what you have now. I think if you go in knowing that, then you won't be disappointed and will have a more positive experience. I'm glad I did it, but know my limitations. I also know I will have to have more surgeries (I left one ruptured disc alone since it wasn't the main source of my pain). I hope that helps. Guest guest
Hi thre! Four back surgery, 1 brain surgery, and too many nerve blocks to count. My last surgery was a 2 level, posterior/anterior fusion with instrumentation. Others are correct...you must know my limitations and listen to your Dr. After the first three laminectomies, my first Dr. put no restrictions on me. and I ended up having more surgeries. My last Dr., I found and researched on the internet, and I must say, my pain is 70% better than it has been in 20 years! I had to quit lifting my younger special education students and I am now teaching High School Spec. ED. But it was more than worth it!!!! Don't give up!!! There is hope!! Guest guest
Dawn, this is a terrible thing to have to go through at 35, what area are you having the fusion done? There are a lot of factors that can make it successful or a failure, being healthy (active) and not overweight, IMO are 2 of the most important ones. While I'm not an expert, I have the misfortune of experience. I am sure any questions you have can be answered, just ask anyone in this group. I can understand not being able to live a normal life, pain can really hinder any hopes of that. Has you surgeon given you a rate of success?  george  The dog has seldom been successful in pulling man up to its level of sagacity, but man has frequently dragged the dog down to his. Guest guest
I am not sure what I think of my Spinal Fusion and Instrumentation with Luque Rods. I have am S shaped Curve and have 2 rods. Sometimes I am negative and say that I should never have had the surgery. There are times when I think I would be crippled if I had not. 3 doctors told me that I had to have it. My curve was progressing. The bone that they took off of my pelvic area hurt worse than the fusion. I am not 50 and am getting ready to have the Spinal Stenosis Surgery - a Lamenectomy. I wonder if I woudl have needed this without all of the other surgery. Who is to say what would have happened one way or the other.
Guest guest
I had my scoliosis curve straightened with Cotrell-Duboussett rods and fusion in 1993. It was a very successful surgery and I had little pain thereafter, although your general lifestyle does change. There are simply some things that you can no longer do but then that becomes the norm and you don't even notice much. I had the rods removed in 2003 because the rods were becoming very painful. As it turns out, I had junctional kyphosis (kyphosis had formed where the upper fusion stopped) and this was stressing my rods and making them hurt. We did not find this out until January 2008 when I went in for my yearly checkup and found that I had a 75 degree kyphotic curve. By the time I found a surgeon in June 2008, it was 92 degrees. I had the surgery to correct it with Dr Lenke in Nov 2008. I had a surgery on the 5th and 7th. The surgery and pain from the surgery are pretty bad but my surgery was a success and I am straight and tall now. I am still out of work and not driving- recovery time is a year for my type of surgery (yes I ma still on lots of meds) because it included revision of old, plus vertebrae columnar resection, and then fixing the new. If you do a search for Dr Lenke and spine deformity, he has a great website. He is pretty much the best in the US and is pioneering the way for even better outcomes. The only thing is that he only sees " severe deformity " cases so if yours is really straight forward, he may refer you to one of his associates- which are also really good! Hope that helps, feel free to email me with any specifics! And good luck!!! > > Anyone has done the spinal fusion surgery for more than 10 years? Guest guest
What's happening to you is not that rare. I had my surgery in 2005, T4-L5. Very successful and I believe I overdid. My surgeon didn't believe in braces, and I think if I'd worn one it might've kept me from doing as much as I did. I basically arranged and participated physically in moving myself and my elderly mother from WI to NM. We had a 2 flat for 16 years so there was so much involved. I also didn't use a realtor and I flew to NM one weekend to find a house. I was beyond exhausted by the time we finally made it here. During all that I also walking 8 dogs a day, in the bitter cold and hot humidity, plus watched my grandson everyday after school, plus dealt with my teenage son's issues with me and his girlfriend. Then when I moved into our nice new house, there were so many things wrong it took a year for me to get it all taken care of. A new house is not what I thought it would be. So a year later, just over 2 years from the time of my surgery, my rods broke. I didn't fuse in the L2-L4 area. I wonder if I'd taken better care of myself if that wouldn't have happened. But I needed to move to get into a better living situation. So I had a 2 part surgery last year, one was a revision and one was to fuse me from L5-S1 because that disc was worn down. After 2 years. From what I was told that happens often. But maybe it depends on your lifestyle. And I've always lived as tho nothing is wrong with my back. I'm doing it different this time around. No more surgery for me! I've had 4 now. ________________________________ From: <ladams9200@...> Scoliosis Treatment Sent: Friday, January 30, 2009 8:13:40 AM Subject: Re: Spinal Fusion Surgery Hi Betty, Sure...I will answer your questions the best I can. 1. I had my surgery June 22, 1995 and I was back to work (just a little bit) the end of August. When I first came home, I had a wheelchair and a hospital bed because I could hardly move. I had to take a pillow everywhere.. .including school when I went back. I was in the hospital 8 days. I grew 2 inches during the surgery. :)It's a long recovery but every day, after the initial month or so, you really do see improvement every day. And of course, the technology is SO MUCH better now than it was when I had my surgery so that makes all the difference. 2. Yes, I do still feel some pain now and then. In Nov. 1996, they had to go back in and cut the top of my harrington rods off because they were pinching a nerve in my arm. I still feel a rod touching my shoulder blade here and there...especially when I sleep sometimes. But, it's not that bad. It's just something that you learn to live with and you know that that's you. It just feels weird, not so much pain. 3. My curves (I had an " S " curve) went from around 80+ degrees to now the top curve is at 46. The bottom is in the 30's. Well worth it! I am having problems now with my L4-S1 vertebrae. That is below my fusion. I am fused to L3. That is curving now and has progressed greatly in the past couple of years. It is at 25 degrees. So, can complications occur in the future...sure, but it is rare. I'm just a rare case. That is where I have all of my pain now. But, I know a couple other people that had the same surgery that have no problems now. It's just a freak instance of problems with me. I would absolutely do it over again if I had to. I would still be terrified but I would do it. I had to. And like I said, the technology is so good now that it wouldn't be like when I had it, I'm sure. Hope this helps! Guest guest
Hello Betty, I had my first surgery in 1996, second one in 1998 and my last was 2005. It's a kind of catch 22 in my case. I traded one pain for another one but it was a surgery I had to have done or I would have died because of all the scoliosis was doing to my body and it's organs. Some people do very well after surgery. I made sure that it was best for me before I had it done. I didn't want it because I had heard of all the pain but at the end there was only one choice and that was to have the surgery. Hope that helps. God has brought me so far and He's still with me so I know that prayer does work for me. God Bless You, Dereise........ > > Anyone has done the spinal fusion surgery for more than 10 years?
