Hi :

My sinuses have been so bad throughout my life, do to allergies, that my ear

drums have been destroyed. I have been using a hearing aid for several years,

but my hearing has deteriorated since I've been on the Xolair, two years now. I

don;'t know if it's due to Xolair or not. My doctors never heard of it

affecting hearing.

Hi Kathy,

I am really curious as to what your doc said about " she was concerned about

stirring things up " . I have lost hearing in one ear since being on Xolair

but I had to decide do I want to hear or breath, I chose breath but I would

like to know if more people have had this side effect. Genentec told my

doc's nurse that only 2 others have lost hearing but they had multiple

problems so they were not sure of the cause. I also have multiple problems

so I went back on Xolair after stopping for 2 months out of fear of losing

hearing in my other ear.

Looking forward to hearing more from your doc.

Kathy, I wonder if your docs will ever be able to determine why your

hearing further deteriorated. I'm sorry to hear that you have had

further hearing loss. Fortunately, hearing aid technology is much

better than it was (my dad's been wearing them for 30+ years).

He said instead of getting my allergy shots every 4 weeks I should get them

every 3 weeks now. It is definitely the high mold we have been having this

year. Even my eyes have been itching like crazy.

Hi Kathy:

My allergist said one of his patients is a doctor and he feels best

getting his allergy shots weekly. I was doing them every 2 weeks when I did

them myself, but now it's too far to go, so I'm trying them monthly. If I

notice a difference, I'll go back to every 2 weeks.

Hello Kathy,

I wonder if that is at the bottom of my hearing loss too. I have had sinus

infections for years, starting one now.

The list of side effects includes earache. This is something I would be

interested in knowing more about.

It was pointed out to be that you have to weigh the benefits against the

risks and that some people are more sensitive than others.

I know I feel better on the Xolair.

- thanks for that post. I had always wondered if my chronic

sinus infections were doing any permanent damage somewhere.

Currently my husband is the only one who thinks I have a hearing

problem. :)

I see suspected hearing loss as a possible side effect of taking

Xolair the same way that I saw suspected hair loss: There are so

MANY reasons one can lose hearing/hair and most of them are far more

likely than Xolair. Particularly as loss of hearing/hair may be a

symptoms of a more serious underlying medical condition (hair loss

and thyroid problems, for example), it's really important that one

leave no avenue unexplored to determine the source of a problem like

hearing loss or hair loss.

Please discuss any potential changes in treatment with your doc

first.

is related to your hearing loss. Have you consulted an audiologist

or had any hearing tests to determine if your loss is due to

conduction (ie bones in middle ear defect) or neural deficits (ie

anywhere from the cochlea to cranial nerve XII and the auditory

processing center in the parietal area)?

definitely linked to conduction deficits and meningitis will cause

neural conduction loss. Perhaps it is just a coincidence that the

loss occured at the same time as you took the medication?

I didn't know there were " quite a few Xolair patients out there with this

problem " . Where did you get the information? I would like to know more.

I have been to ENT and the MRI didn't show any changes in fact the mastoid

had improved. I go to a neurotologist in Sept. The meningitis I had was 14

months before the hearing loss which occurred 3 months after starting

Xolair.

Thanks,
