I hope everyone had a great holiday season and good New Year (thusfar). Sorry it's been awhile since my last posting, things were busy at the holidays and now even busier it seems. I'm starting back to school this weekend (working on my Masters) and helping coach my 11-year-old son's basketball team. Hard to believe that it's been 4 months since my Ectomy and 2 months since going back to work. My weight is still the same (around 188 - I'm 6'1 " )- hasn't gone up, hasn't gone down, so that's about 40lbs gone. Went to my local GI doc last week for a routine follow-up. My BP was 114/73 -lowest in last couple of years (I'll be 44 in March), so I guess there's another " silver lining " to this thing. I can (and do) eat whatever I want; pizza, burgers, chicken, bread (even had steak twice in the last month) and it slides on down no problem. Just can't eat as much. I haven't had any sour stomach and absolutely no indigestion - which I battled for years after my M surgery. The only problem is that I've had trouble with " dumping " and about a 1/2 dozen hypoglycemic (low blood sugar) episodes. Not after every meal and not every day. I discussed this with my local GI doc (great guy BTW) and he gave me some good tips that seem to work. The blood sugar issues, as you can imagine, are due to sugar intake (I love sweets, etc). The problem is that now the digestive system processes things A LOT quicker - so more insulin rushes into the system. Once that burns off - the sweats, shakes, etc associated with low blood sugar. The solution - watch the sweets and if I get low blood sugar (shakes, etc) - have a LITTLE more (piece of candy, etc) to offset - just like a diabetic would. The dumping is even easier. Since stomach capicity is about 1/2 of what it was, things are processed quicker. If you drink with your meal or a lot right after the meal, that process is EVEN QUICKER!! So, the solution is not to drink with the meal (just sips) and don't drink at least 1 hour after. So far this seems to be working pretty good - and I save about $1.50 when I eat out by not buying a drink!! Only water for a few sips. Still have numbness and some aches in the surgery areas and he said that could take about a year to go away and some small areas may stay numb forever. I've noticed that physical activity like shooting b'ball with my son, seem to make it go away for awhile. Now if I could just make the scars fade away (ha, ha). Well, that's all for now. I hope everyone is doing well - especially my fellow Ectomy " survivors " - Steve, et al. Tonia (and ) - my fellow Virginians - how has bounced back? Well- I hope. Take care all - will try to be better about posting. Mike in VA
Guest guest
Hi, Mike, It's good to hear that you are doing well. I like sweets, too, and I've got to get it down because I'm trying to become the fit person I was about eight years ago. I keep some Jelly Bellies in my desk and have one or three or ten when I absolutely need a "fix". Actually, I am currently out of Jelly Bellies and the market beckons..... I am grateful that you and others who have had some more intense surgeries are doing well, email-in about your progress and let us know you are doing better in general. This is such a good group of people. And Thank Gawd we've got people here who understand this disease. I really can't get it across to anybody who does not have it. My Achalasia was working on me for some time, I suspect, and even I didn't think about the inability to swallow properly, or at all, because in my family the tendency is to criticize the person with the problem and tell them to "buck up" and get over it. (Sometimes I wish we could "out-source" our families.) But, HERE is a family of people who understand. And when several members have problems and others write in about how they handled it, Oh!, what a relief! So, I wish all of us good health, the best we can have, and that this New Year is a splendid one. Deborah

Guest guest
When I started they would work for about 4 months (tapering off towards the end of the time). I would know it was time to go back when the pain returned. It started to last less time over a couple of years. When it stopped helping all together, I knew it was time for the inevitable surgery. Everyone is different. It really depends what your issue is and how severe it is. I started the injections after my discectomy and I had already lost a lot of the disc. That never healed so the shots were short term. I knew that and was able to accept what their purpose was for, interim solution to put off the inevitable. One of the things I did to make the shots last longer was talk to my pain dr. He adjusted where he put the shots and that helped elongate the shots effectiveness. Communication with your dr is key. Even if it is only 5 minutes before your surgery. Just my .02!
