Hi everyone,

This is my first post. This is about the best site I can find on

the internet about spine problems. My wife has had almost every test

there is for this disease. She had an MRI and last week was sent to a

surgeon to look at the films. He told us the surgery will not help her

problem. In 2003 she had steroid shots in her lower back ( 3 sessions )

before it would relieve the pain. She went back to work and her lower

back was good for 4 years but she still had pain while working but she

could tolerate it. But the very bad pain started over again 6 weeks ago

and she is in constant pain even with the medication GABAPENTIN 300Mg

taking two tablets a day. She is being referred to a pain management

clinic to see if she can get on some kind of medication so she will be

able to get back to work in the distant future. Is there anyone here

that has this problem ? I sure would like to hear what they are doing

about your situation. Thank you

The shots that she had 6 years ago can be taken in a series of 3 twice

a year or a series of 2 3x a year (a total of 12 shots a year). A

pain mang dr can do those as well. A pain mang dr is a good place to

go. They are familiar with what works for individuals and what new

meds/procedures are out there for pain. A neurologist does not do

that. If surgery is needed that is when a neurologist will come into

play. It is nice that you are supportive. Keep it up and I hope your

wife gets some relief.

Another group of drugs widely used are the antidepression drugs that have as a

side effect, the relief of neurologic pain....not related to depression at

all...drugs like elavil or effexor....sadly, I cannot take them because of side

effects(raises my blood pressure too much...)...but they worked..

I'm about to take some elavil that I have. When my doctor first prescribed it

and I found out it was an anti-depressant, I couldn't figure out why he gave it

to me. But it does help ... and I am not depressed ... I just hurt! LOL!
