Guest guest
Hi , Sounds like you're doing well. I do notice a lack of veggies in your diet. Add some in! They are good for nutrients and fiber and will keep you fuller longer. Other than that, your sample meal plan and the timing of the meals looks great. On the exercise, any reason you're not doing the ones outlined in the book? The 20 minute cardio solution 3 times a week and the weightlifting 46 minutes upper body, 42 minutes lower body 3 times a week? Maybe you should try it that way and see if you can't get a more intense weights workout in. Park need advice please > I was hoping someone would be kind enough to help me > out. Guest guest
Oh yeah, I agree with Colleen on the power bars (I must have zoned out on that part :0)) Park Re: need advice please , Have you taken measurements? If so, I'd compare and see if see any changes. I know in week 4 I had only lost 1/2-1 lb but had significant changes in waist and hip measurements. As far as diet, the first thing I do is throw out the Power Bars...definitely not BFL; not enough protein, too high in carbs and sugar. Also what is in your protein shake, fruit or something? If not, where are your carbs for that meal. Every meal should be protein and carbs. What is the sugar content in your yogurt? You may want to cut down to 1/2 tbsp of peanut butter also. Some things suggested to me to really crunch down are (and these are just suggestions some people do find without changing them) limit fruit to once a day limit processed carbs (bread, etc. to 1 serving per day if you have to have it all, but try to eliminate it) and also try to eliminate the yogurt if you can Make sure you are drinking your water also Also are you doing BFL workouts? If so, you should be doing 20MAS or HIIT 3 times a week and lifting 3 times a week. Colleen > I was hoping someone would be kind enough to help me > out. Guest guest
, I second Colleen's comments. The workout you describe is not strictly Body for Life, which may explain your lack of results. Cardio is catabolic (loosely translated, it breaks down tissue) while weight training is anabolic (meaning it builds tissue). Therefore, the amount of cardio you are doing may be hindering your ability to gain muscle. Doing both in one day might be counterproductive for you. The BFL workout is designed for you to do just enough cardio to burn fat but not muscle. If you choose not to follow the BFL-style workout, I would advise that you do either cardio, or weights, but not both, on the same day. Personally, although I continue to eat BFL style, I am currently experimenting with a weight training split that includes NO cardio. (I haven't done cardio for over two months and I was a cardio JUNKIE!). Although I don't intend to do it forever, I really think that I have seen much greater muscle gains this way. Guest guest
Hi ! First off, let me say that 120 pounds is great!!! I would definitely say you aren't getting enough calories IMHO to build muscle. And you don't have any vegetables at all, that helps. You are getting a lot of good protein sources too, but I wouldn't eat a protein bar and immediately follow it with a shake. I would try to mix it up a little and go for more natural carbs, like fruit. Good luck with your challenge! Keep it up! Jana > I was hoping someone would be kind enough to help me > out. Guest guest
Wow!!! No cardio? That's intense. I, too, am a total cardio junkie and it was really tough my first time around to NOT do a lot of cardio. But lo and behold those muscles crept out from under the cardio-tired skin!!! Guest guest
Doug, I'm so sorry to hear about your health. I hope things start looking up soon. I had gallbladder probs in 1999 but only needed a temporary tube placed to drain it. Details are sketchy b/c I was very sick at the time and unconscious. At 29, I've had too many surgeries to list. Obviously I lived to tell . Look up anesthesia and SMA for starters. Intubation for me has never been a huge deal even before my trach and they can intubate you thru your nose if necessary. I've had some sort of breathing assistance since 13 yrs old. I was able to be successfully extubated immediately after each surgery until 1999, but I'm not certain Bach's protocol was followed very well. During that surgery my stomach muscles were cut and I'm a belly breather. After a few years I was able to go all day without the vent and only use it for sleep. I opted to keep the trach but have been told I can be decanulated and go back to NIV if I ever want to. Since that surgery in 99 I've had a few surgeries and some procedures that required general anesthesia or sedation and have done fairly well. Intubation was not an issue b/c of the trach. One time I woke up at the end of a procedure before the paralytic wore off. The procedure was pretty much ending and I didn't experience any pain. It was scary but I regained the ability to move about a minute later and was able to show them I was awake. After each surgery/procedure I was back to baseline in a few weeks or less. As for your concern about recuperating in bed, nowadays they want you up and at 'em the day after or shortly after. I've learned the longer I stay in bed the harder it is to finally get out. It may sound morbid or very negative but I highly suggest you have a talk w/your family AND doctor about what interventions you want and/or do not want if you require any type of general or even sedation and a problem arises. It's optimal to have this all written down in an advance directive therefor there is no question of your desires and less stress on your family to make the decisions for you. Make sure the document adheres to the requirements of your state. It varies from state to state. In PA no lawyer is needed just your signature and 2 witnesses. I can answer more direct questions if needed. Just ask them . Guest guest
Hi Doug, I'm sorry you have to go through this. I am ventilator dependent and did fine with anesthesia in three surgeries. They can fiberoptically tube you through your nose. I made sure they used no muscle relaxant anesthesia, and I pre-arranged eye signals for when I woke and was still intubated. Eyebrows up = YES; Eyebrows down = NO. They 1st asked about pain level and if I wanted the pain meds (toradol is non- narcotic and works greatbut usually can't be taken for long, and 25 - 50 mcg of fentanyl every 30 minutes didn't decrease my breathing), and then asked if I was to be extubated and if I wanted my daytime vent with a mouthpiece or a mask. I had also pre-arranged to have a suction machine ready because being tubed is so irritating...blood and mucus. Here are two links for your doctor/anesthesiologist: http://www.mdausa.org/publications/fa-sma-qa.html (general) http://www.mdausa.org/publications/Quest/q73anesthesia.html (anesthesia) Keep us posted. Guest guest
i feel for you! i was over 40 when i had to have my gallbladder removed, they managed to do it keyhole so i was only in hospital one night. i really recommend using a cough assist post op to clear your chest from all the gunk post op. i also really really recommend shopping around for the best surgeon you can find who has already done this keyhole 100's of times before. the first surgeon i saw did'nt think he would even be able to attempt to do it keyhole as all my bits have shifted into their own unique shape! then i found one who specilized in extremely complex liver transplants who did gallbladders for light relief and he was 90% confident he wouldnt have to open me right up. of course this is all assuming you decide the gallballder needs to come out. cheers linda On 11/4/07, Alana <alrt@...> wrote: > > Hi Doug, > > I'm sorry you have to go through this. Guest guest
They should have a para. With us it is a little different, our school has Prek for children with special needs. My sons teacher is retiring this year but his para will stay one more year so to help with the transition.. Have you tried sitting with her? I know one of the other aids for the other room, my son cannot stand. I think she yelled at him once and I kind of saw it. She did not know I was his mom but had his arm pretty tight. Now if she opens the door for him even with his teacher standing inside, he will take 4 steps back and not move. I really think my son has a great sense for good people. He will surely need it in life. Saturday night I coughedup fluids in my sleep and have been sleeping upright ever since. Yesterday was pure misery. I had horrible heartburn, even before eatinganything. I did water all day and then in the evening I had somestrained cream of mushroom soup. The soup went down, stayed down, noproblem. I think the warmth actually helped soothe things a bit. This morning I have had several glasses of water. That went well, so Itried a glass of milk. It felt like the milk sort of backed up in mythroat and is sitting there. Some of it came back up in what I can onlyassume is a " pb " . I called my doctors office to have fill taken out. They will not see meuntil tomorrow and told me in the meantime to put meat tenderizer inwater and drink that. I am afraid this will irritate my obviouslyalready swollen pouch. I told her this and she said it would dissolvewhatever is in there and I will feel better. It sounds ludicrous to me.Berta[Non-text portions of this message have been removed] _________________________________________________________________ It’s easy to add contacts from Facebook and other social sites through Windows Live™ Messenger. Guest guest
Thanks , I think I need a new dr. Need advice please I had my last fill May 7. I was adjusting to the new level fine untilFriday. Guest guest
Something badly irritated your stoma, sounds like. Mushrooms and chicken are both hard to chew well, even when we start with the needed pea-sized bite. Whn grilled, chicken can be dry, so sauces and marinades are good. You're swollen enough now that you're having the reflux at night, and this is dangerous, so i'm glad you're seeing the doc for a small unfill asap. Sleeping in a recliner is also a good way to prevent aspirating at night, until you get the unfill. Meat tenderizer is a terrible idea, imo. There is nothing positive it can do to an already swollen and irritated stoma. the enzymes could easily do even more damage. There is absolutely NO scientific reason this could possibly work - using meat tenderizer on cut meat on the counter takes hours to work, as the enzymes dissolve the meat fibers. Also, WHY in the world would we want to put ther enzymes on the MEAT of our stomach tissu???? The myth that meat tenderizer helps has been around for a very long time, and simply is irresponsible. some have gotten into severe trouble. i sure would not touch it. all you can so is sip hot liquids today, and avoid all solids. place a warm heating pad on your chest for 30 min every 2-3 hrs, to help open nd realx the stoma, and encourage healing. aim for at least 80 oz of fluid today, as any dehydration will make everything worse. Good luck tomorrow - you'll be fine after the unfill and a week or so of rest and healing. I'd suggest liquids only for 24 hs after the unfill too, and then a slow progression back to soft , then regular foods, over a week or so. Sandy r > > I had my last fill May 7. Guest guest
PS - be sure to sip fluid slowly, so they don't back up. this means 2-3 small sips, then a rest of 10-15 seconds, to allow them to go thru. Warm and hot things are best, as they wuill relax and open the stoma. cold things will shrink it further. you may have to sip things all day long to get enough in, but this is important. sandy > > Something badly irritated your stoma, sounds like. Guest guest
Thanks Sandy, You think a small unfill will do it? I don't need it all taken out? I thought the meat tenderizer was a bad idea. Guest guest
Berta, Let's see what your doc thinks. I'd also ask hm more about this meat tenderizer idea. I can't believe he ok's his staff to advise things like that. Usually, 1/2 to 1/3 of the fill is enough to get out. I'd suggst trying 1/3, and hanging around for an hour near the office, sipping hot liquids and see how it goes. they should go doewn easily. You can get more out, if needed, but i bet tht will be enough. Good advice from heather, too, as usual! Sandy r > > > > I had my last fill May 7.
