Hi Eva...

Once one's skeleton in mature, no amount of external force will stop or

slow the progression of scoliosis curves. You may want to call the

Scoliosis Association (800-800-0669) to get a copy of the July-August

1999 issue of BackTalk. In that issue, seven scoliosis specialists tell

us why bracing won't work for adults. Also, for an explanation of

exactly why it won't work, check out

http://members.home.net/lindaracine/AdultBracing.htm.

Sounds like we have the same brace. The brace slips

over the knee, and the U-shaped buttress is velcro'd

(is that a word??) in place. I've used it on a fair

amount of movement, including elliptical, walking and

even in the water walking. It works well for

everything except bicycling. The back of the knee

gets pinched and I don't like it. I also don't like

it when I use the rowing machine. I guess anything

that requires more extreme flexion causes that

pinching in the back, and pushing down of the kneecap.

nne

Brace

nne -- what kind of brace is it? I bought what I

hoped would be a wonderful brace -- it wraps around

the leg & Velcro's on (I have arthritis in my fingers

so pulling one on is painful), and has a movable

U-shaped buttress. But after hiking with it (on flat

ground) for half an hour, I found it had slipped up

onto my patella, so it wasn't pushing it over.

Hey there...

I live in Canada... I know there is a bit of a wait

for surgery but

usually not over a years wait. Most of the time it's

about 6 months

at the most. I don't think my doctor is taking me

very

seriously

about this issue. My family doctor said PT is the

" treatment " for

chondromalacia, like all I had to do was go to PT

and

it would get

better, but my PT said I have very bad

chondromalacia,

like bone on

bone (which means I must be close to Grade IV). Like

I've had

problems with my knee for 3 years and I'm just

finding

out now

what's wrong.

Actually I find I am more pain whenever I have

physiotherapy and I

care barely walk for days after each session. I have

a

bunch of

exercises I do at home on a daily basis (as well as

PT

twice a week

at the moment), as well as I ice my knee 3 times a

day, take some

anti-immflammitories and apply an anti-immflam cream

3

times daily.

But I still hurt a ridulous amount every single day.

I

can barely

walk, it sometimes keeps me up at night and every

one

seems to think

it is minor, when I know it's not. I mean it's my

body

I know what I

feel but everyone seems to just brush me off and

think

it's alright

for me to not have a job to just " deal " with the

pain.

I'm 25! I

never injured myself and no one can explain to me or

want to give me

any solutions to what is wrong! :(

I'm not sure, but that may be the Spinecor brace. Link below.

I have read some messages regarding the Brace. I have searched the web

for " Brace " and cannot find anything about it.

Can someone please direct me to the web site for the Brace - I am very

interested in learning about it.

I went to a brace maker for mine. I live in Canada. Usually the

orthopedic department of a hospital can give you the name of someone

who makes braces. The brace is basically a h shape on its side

with one section going up the spine and two sections wrapping

themselves around the ribs on the top and bottom... a corset type belt

holds it in place.

However those things are custom made and I am sure whoever makes

braces in your area can make you one if you have a prescription for

it. I know you need one here for it. It's fairly simple brace... It

won't straighten your back. It's only used for support.

Thanks for the information, . I will speak with my physician about it to

see if it might be an option to help me from pitching forward.

I had my surgeries done in 1963....that's over 40 years ago...I was 16 and

after everything was complete, surgeries, casts, rehab, etc.....I had to wear

this brace for almost 1 year. Just like described except I was never allowed

to be upright without it meaning that I had to put it on while lying in bed.

Then, once secured, I was able to get up and go. I could remove it at

night and believe me, by the end of the year, it was barely still in one piece.

Several of the buckles were hanging by threads. But it obbviously worked

because I am still as straight as can be today. I have recurring problems with

pain and am getting help for that ... but Cleveland Clinic produced a

miracle, in my eyes.

Oh, PS...the brace was quite comfortable if properly fitted.

Hi All

It seems like forever since I talked to you all. I'm back to work and hardly ever get a free minute to come on here and see how everyone is doing. I have a question regarding braces. Peyton has been in a brace now for about 2 months. We have had to the brace altered and adjusted many times to get it to hold the way it did in the cast. My question is does anyone elses little one scream when you put the brace back on: Peyton screams and says "ouchie" each time I put the brace back on. He seems fine afterwards but its killing me to think I'm hurting him everyday. He seems to be really red in certain spots on his back and ribs when I take off the brace and I know thats just where the pressure spots are on the brace but do you think the kids ache or get sore from the brace?

Hello Lynn ,My son always crys a bit when I put his brace back on but as soon as I have it done up he forgets about it . All red spots should go away in 30 min. Our Ortho said to put rubbing alcohol on the red spots to make the skin stronger. I just put a tiny bit on a cotton ball and rub on the spot. It has worked for us and now Thaddeus doesn't get red spots.Mom to Thaddeus Sent from my iPhoneOn Oct 25, 2010, at 11:16 AM, Lynn Marsden <lynn_marsden@...> wrote:

Many families agree that a properly applied EDF plaster cast is far more

comfortable (and effective) than a brace. Transition time wasnt easy for

Liv either, but she eventually got used to it. I hope he's better today.

Hi Everyone!

I'm actually writing from home this time! I left rehab midday on Friday.

I have various people from a visiting nurses' association coming by.

Eventually it will be a nurse, PT, OT, and a case manager also came by

yesterday. They will all come until I can switch to normal outpatient

services. My first surgical follow up appointment is is about a week.

I have to admit -- wearing my post-surgical brace is driving me crazy!

Everyone who has checked it says that it fits correctly and that I am

wearing it correctly. Did it drive any of you crazy too? What can I do

to make it tolerable? I want to start getting up more and start doing

more things, but my avoidance of the brace Is a severe hinderance.

I hope you'e all having a great weekend!

Hi Joy,

I have attached a link from my blog of e being casted for her brace. This

was with our old specialist who did not have the risser frame though.

It took about 20-30 mins. We found she felt more restricted in her brace than

her cast when it was first put on. We usually have to get a couple of

adjustments.

Happy to answer any other questions you may have.

fitted for the brace does it take long? What should we exspect? How long does it

take to make the brace? Anyway full of questions.

Hi Joy,

There are many types of braces and many types of brace applying protocols.

Please find out what type of brace and go from there. One important rule

when transferring to a brace is to be sure that it fits well and was made

effective and specifically for Jaylin's curve(s). Have them take an xray

in brace to be sure its doing what its supposed to:)

Hi heather, The cast clinic said when they take off jaylins cast they are using that as his mold but also take measurements. The nurse said its going to be just like his risser cast, well edf cast. It will take 2-3 days to make it and he will not have to be put under :):) to do that. Live, laugh, and loveJoyOn May 21, 2012, at 10:47 AM, heather@... wrote:
