Guest guest
--, My son gets an itchy rash around his mouth and he gets really agitated and more defiant when we have a yeast die-off. It was intolerable when we put him on Nystatin and so after 3 weeks on it (and enzymes) even at a really low dose we stopped it and are now using 3 different pro-biotics to see if we can take care of it this way. I would suspect the culturelle. We just put Elijah on Pro-bio Gold and we are seeing a return to the mouth rash and attitude. Not as bad as the Nystatin but not as good as when we are not having a yeast flare up and on enzymes. The yeast definately messes with our success. We are hoping to get some of theese nasty buggers with the 3 different pro-biotics, but if this does not work we will have to try Diflucan. Although Dana has had reaally good success with GSE (grapefruit seed extract) and I may possibly try this first. Guest guest
Hi , First, I have to say how sorry I am... I really hope things will start working better for your son. I'm sure you will find what's causing his distress and will " fix " him quickly I do recognize all these symptoms Do you happen to know if your son is low sulfur? I had a similar problem very recently and all the symptoms that you described sound so similar... They all vanished the minute I took NAC. First I thought it's yeast or phenol, so I tried the Epsom salts, and they did help some, but not really... Maybe your son has a low cysteine problem? I don't want to suggest you to try feeding him sulfur foods, because I know how bad I react to them, no matter how low sulfur I am, so... I don't know... Hope this helps.... Guest guest
, Is he on any products that contain vitamin B? I put my son on a B vitamin product a few weeks ago and after a few days he developed a rash all over his body and was stimming more, even after I reduced to a low dose. I don't recall that the rash itched, though. Does your son have celiac disease? If he does and has any gluten, a rash can be a possible reaction. I don't recall anyone saying they developed a rash from Culturelle, especially after a few weeks, but after investigating other possibilities, I would consider lowering the dose or dropping it for a few days. Perhaps it is a die-off effect - in that case, the rash is a good thing and you could just reduce the dose, then build up gradually. > I don't know, as soon as we have a good spell we seem to go down hill again > just as quickly! > > has an itchy rash over parts of his back and a few on his stomach. > They are quite large and red, and look a little dry and he has had them for > about four days. Guest guest
Thanks to everyone who replied to my email. I am glad to report that has calmed down a lot since I wrote. On Saturday he was screaming and aggressive for 21/2hrs. This is the first time I had seen him this bad since pre enzymes. Anyway, it is looking as though it is a phenol problem again as he had epsom salt baths, milk thistle etc and seems to be getting calmer by the day. Still has his itchy spots though but I don't think they are so angry. I'll keep an eye on them and see if there is a difference when I next use Culturelle, just in case there is a problem or die off. Now that it seems as though has a permenant phenol problem I have a dilemma. B6 appears to help his speech a lot but although we were giving it to him in very small doses as a multi vitamin with P5P we are now thinking that this is going to have to go. Trouble is, I am afraid that we may lose some of his emerging speech too. Valentina - could you please let me know what NAC stands for? Probably something really obvious but doesn't come to mind. Ta. Guest guest
, Some parents (including myself) report reasonably good results reducing phenol problem by adding molybdenium to the diet. You can consider a product with B6 but not in the P5P form, because I believe it is the P5P form of B6 that aggravates phenol issues. http://www.autismchannel.net/dana/phenol.htm Dana
Guest guest
Hi , I just wanted to mention that my daughter's eczema always flares up with the epsom salt baths. I started putting a little bit of glycerin in the bath with the salts and that has helped to prevent the dry itchy rashes. I am way behind on reading my e.mail so if this has already been addressed, I apologize for the repeat. Guest guest
This topic comes up often - -Rashes. However the key here is that you said you noticed it prior to diagnosis. After being a group member for almost 6 years I can tell you that previously this Rash topic prior to dx has been around before too. I personally had a the same experience which later was considered to possibly have been A slight case of shingles. I had several episodes of a rash appearing on my right leg and arm only. Have not had any since but I really think that this had to do with my immune system being weak. Guest guest
my last xolair shots left me itching as well. I thought it was possibly from receiving antibiotic on the same day. Then I thought it was because of the medicine not being mixed as well as it should, being around yarn in the basement, using a different detergent etc. Next injection I will be careful to make sure I take an allergy medication first. The itching ended up lasting for about 4 days. I am not ruling out anything . I have been on xolair for a year and my life has been wonderful because of it. Guest guest
i get rashes all the time, not from the xolair, but b/c i have eczema. if you do'nt mind me asking, how much atarax are you taking? when my itching is bad, i have been " approved " to take up to 75mg (100 if i'm really desperate, but i try not to), which usually helps. if you're not taking that much, maybe you can call your dr and ask about increasing your dose? also, the elecon cream did absolutely nothing for me. it must help someone, but it wasn't me. maybe you need something stronger? as i've said before, the only reaction i get from xolair is better breathing and fewer eczema flares. =o) here's a thought for you....because i know this is how it is for me. is it possible that the xolair just isn't lasting the full two weeks (or month, whatever your dosing is)? after three years, i'm still not lasting the entire 2 weeks!!!! anyway, so, your first 7 days is great, and then by day 8 it starts to wear off (or some other scientific word). your body would be more likely to react and have reactions if the xolair wasn't working in full force. eventually, you get a good mix of assorted meds in you to control the skin flare, and then its ok til your next dose. you stop the newer skin-related meds, get your xolair, and then after a while, it starts to wear off....and you flare....and you just go round and round. you can develop eczema at any time in your life, so maybe?? its just a thought. for me, i missed a dose of xolair (i'm on 375 every two weeks, and its not enough) b/c i was in the hosp and my dr wasn't comfortable giving it to me with the other meds from the hospital (cellulitis). so, i'm going into week FOUR of no xolair. its safe to say i'm pretty unhappy. my skin is flaring, even with the most potent cream i've been on in a long time (clobetesol). my lungs are starting to complain more, and its further complicated by the increase in reflux from the antibiotics for the cellulitis. i'm probably feeling about as miserable as you - i'm one big itchy mess!!!! and it stinks! as for your itching, you might get temporary relief from a soak in a bath with aveeno bath stuff in it (as long as you're not allergic to oatmeal). for me, its generally soothing, but unfortunately, it doesn't last forever once you get out of the tub. i'm sure they told you this, but make sure you moisturize too - my dr has me using eucerin - it feels similar to crisco, but lemme tell ya - its the best thing to moisturize with! anyway, i hope you find a solution and your recent eczema outbreaks (or whatever they are) are not related to xolair!. feel better!!!! heather tiredofsteroids <sitesee@...> wrote: I've been on Xolair for a year now and am tapering my steroids very gradually, since my adrenals had quit making steroids due to what I've been taking. I'm now down to 60% of what I was on when I started Xolair. I haven't been having any adverse reactions to Xolair but now I'm wondering about something that's been happening recently. Last month, about a week after I received my Xolair shot, I became extremely itchy all over and that lasted for about 5 days. The same thing happened this month, but this time I have a wicked rash on my trunk in addition to unrelenting severe itching. The timing is the same - this time it started 8 days after my Xolair shot and today is day 4 of the misery. I've been living on benadryl around the clock with only partial relief for short periods of time. Today I saw my doc's PA and she gave me a steroid shot, Atarax and Elocon cream, which I started immediately. It's 3 AM here in Florida and the itching is so bad I can't sleep. The Atarax isn't working nearly as well as the Benadryl was, but I can't take Benadryl now until the Atarax dose wears off. Aargh!!! The timing of my symptoms after the Xolair shots may be coincidental as pollen counts have been very high for weeks, but the rash is totally new for me and raises my suspicion that it may be Xolair related. In the past I've NEVER had rashes, no matter how much I itched. I'm wondering if any of you have had a similar experience. Thanks - Fran --------------------------------- Expecting? Guest guest
Fran - I am now absolutely convinced the reduction of steroids in conjunction with the administration of Xolair can cause such reactions. Guest guest
Thanks to everyone for your thoughtful responses. It certainly isn't clear that my symptoms are related to my Xolair shot since the night I started itching I had had chocolate and crab, each of which occasionaly makes me itchy, quickly relieved by one dose of Benadryl. Also, the oak pollen count has been very high for over a week, which definitely can make me itchy for days at a time. I did discuss this with my allergist's PA and we agreed that it might have been too much at the same time that tipped me over and could be coincidental that it was a week after Xolair, same as last month. Only time will tell, I guess. Meanwhile, I'm somewhat better 2 days after the steroid shot (Kenalog), on Atarax and Elocon cream. The rash is mostly gone and the itching is much less intense except when the Atarax wears off.
