I agree with Doug about talking with your doctor. One of the helpful things I

did was to ask my doctor to explain to me exactly how/when I should use each

inhaler (I have three), how many minutes apart, and when I should use my

nebulizer. He was also very specific about when I am to take the singulair--in

the evening. I can either take it before supper or before I go to bed. I take

it about an hour before I go to bed, along with allegra. And for most days, I

used my Advair and Spiriva in the morning when I get up, after using my

albuterol. Some days I have to use my inhaler two or three other times during

the day, but most days I use it in the morning and at night before I go to bed.

In between, if I experience shortness of breath I try to get it under control

using the breathing techniques from pulmonary rehab.

Hope you can get some help, soon! I know what you mean about scaring your

children. Ours were teens when my asthma kicked in (twenty years ago) and our

daughter especially was very fearful when I went to the emergency room twice in

the middle of the night. At least my children were old enough for me to explain

it to them, and my son has very mild asthma. My daughter has since been

diagnosed with very mild allergic asthma in the last two years. She has taken

shots which have helped her tremendously, and she has never had to take

prednisone (my son never has, either). Praise God for that.

Whenever I start having trouble breathing I know it's time to neb. If

I wait, it just gets worse. I use Xopenex mixed with Atrovent.

I NEVER neb or use an inhaler unless it has been 4 since my last use.

With so many health problems you really need to have a good talk with

your doctor. Everyone's asthma symptoms are similar but very different.
