Hi Misty

I have lost 3 pregnancies, so I know what you are feeling right now.

My daughters are now 11 + 8 and " back then " when I was pregnant, I

wasn't allowed to take Flovent or any other " new-fangled " drugs. I was

on Becloforte 16 puffs a day (hence the cataracts etc!), as well as

NUMBEROUS others meds, which I can't remember right now! I do know

after my pregnancies I was switched to Flovent and whatever was new on

the market at that time.

During both of my successful pregnancies, I was on predinsone for a

least the first tri-memster, if not longer, for asthma flares. As I

was told by my doctors, if I wasn't getting any oxygen, neither were

the babies.

Good luck, and if you want to email me off-list to discuss anything,

please go right ahead!

Pamela

(who is very excited that is coming to visit me in Kingston next

week!!! YIPPEEEE!!!!)

Disclaimer - I've never been pregnant

However, I had a long talk with a high risk OBGYN several years ago.

This was pre-Xolair. She said that they had LOADS of information on

the asthma meds available at that time and how they affect babies.

She said that by and large her practice (a high risk practice) was

very successful at delivering healthy babies to asthmatic mothers b/c

their moms took their meds and got sufficient oxygen for mom and baby.

Like you said, She said the worst risk was mom not taking the meds and not

getting enough oxygen.

I had to come off Xolair for a while due to insurance changes and got

some benefit from it for 5-6 months after the last dose.

I would ask your doc to call the local Xolair rep and see if there are

any new stats on Xolair and pregnancy. I know GEnentech has been

doing follow up studies with Xolair patients. I would also talk to an

OB-GYN.

Good luck!!!!

Thanks for the replies. I plan on bringing it up with my GYN (she

specializes in high risk. I've also seen a Perinatologist because of my

losses, and gone through " pre conception counceling " but this was all

before Xolair was in the picture or even mentioned and it was mostly

because of the diabetes factor (even though the only time that is

uncontrolled is witht he asthma is acting up). I just am a worry wart I

guess.

I took Xolair during my last pregnancy. I'd be happy to tell you all

about it. Because of my asthma and other medical conditions I saw a

neonatologist instead of a regular OB/GYN. My pregnancy was not

completely smooth sailing, but it's hard to separate the effects from

other medications I took from Xolair. I'll give you the details if you

like. I tried desperately to find someone who had taken Xolair while

they were pregnant when I was trying to get pregnant and couldn't find

anyone else.

I personally don't think Xolair caused any of my problems. And I now

have a healthy, happy (wild) 18 month old!

Congratulations. My sister had two successful pregnancies during the 60's when

there were not as many meds for asthma, and she actually felt better during her

pregnancies, but she took the meds that she normally took for asthma. I must

also add that her asthma was extremely severe at times and she did have several

stays in the hospital. Both of her children are healthy adults and each of them

has had children (her girl has two children and her boy has one child--all also

doing well.)

Ok, ok, ok - it is a bit of a stretch that I would see a

NEONATOLOGIST. Guess, I had my " ologists " mixed up - don't know why,

I hardly see any :0 Perinatologist would be the correct " ologist " -

neonatologist was what my son had.

Anyway, thanks! We couldn't be happier to have him!

Thanks. Wow, I can't imagine how scary that had to be for your sister;

she was very brave! I'm so glad she had a happy ending, too. I know

when I was reading about asthma and pregnancy it said 1/3 of women

experience improvement, 1/3 stay about the same, and 1/3 experience

increased symptoms. I was in the unlucky 1/3 group, but everything

worked out ok in the end.

I've always thought this was strange, but I had no increased symptoms

during either of my pregnancies. Also, no significant improvement. But my

asthma was much milder then.

However, it was 4 months after my son was born that my asthma went out of

control and I never fully recovered. Until I found Xolair that is. I went

from having such a mild form of asthma, to being completely steroid

dependant almost overnight. I'm still not 100%, and the doctor says I never

will be. But, I'm not steroid dependant anymore and I'll take that!

I'll never risk having another baby though. For me, the danger is just too

great. I can't risk what would happen if my symptoms worsened again. If I

hadn't experienced that, then I'd be willing to try again and take Xolair

throughout.

I think anyone that has the opportunity to have a baby in a healthy manner

while battling asthma should go for it. If my doctor gave me the green

light, I would. With all fo the information I have, and have read about the

way Xolair works, there seems to be no way a baby could be harmed by taking

the medcation. I say it's worth it. I know firsthand what it feels like to

have trouble breathing during pregnancy!

  • 1 year later...

I had a consult with a high-risk obgyn once. This was before Xolair.

She said that normally they will continue to keep their asthmatic

patients on drugs that they are already on and which work for them,

the number one reason being is that the WORST thing for the foetus and

the mom is lack of oxygen.

I would ask your regular OBGYN for an opinion AND for a referral to a

high risk OBGYN for an opinion. I would have them call National Jewish

in Colorado - they've done a ton of the Xolair studies and they

probably have had a few patients on Xolair get preggers and could

probably give an informal but informed opinion.

PERSONALLY, I would stay on Xolair if it were working for me, but I

would not START Xolair during pregnancy.

I do not know if we have had any group members become preggers on

Xolair. You can do a search through past posts to check.

Good luck and God bless,

i agree on everything addy said.

i googled it and found this -

http://www.xolairpregnancyregistry.com/patients.htm - its a study

for patients who are on xolair and pregnant.

i recall seeing something about xolair and pregnancy at my drs

office, but i'm not sure the details. i'd ask your prescribing dr

about it.

keep us posted!
