Guest guest
I am just starting in this whole naturally fermented things...although I have been doing Kamb. tea for about a year. Well, I believe that my " mother " is dead. The last 3 batches I have grown mold on top. I have changed nothing about the way I do this so I really don't know what happened. I would love to hear ideas about possible causes. Plus I need to know where to get another " mom " ...there for a while I was over run with them...now I am in desperate need of a new one! Any help would be great!! And thank you a head of time! Blessings, in TN
Guest guest
First, whenever you get mold on your Kombucha, THROW IT OUT!!! ALL of it. If you keep any part of this stuff, you'll just continue the growing of mold. Sterilize all your equipment, and if you don't think that is good enough, bake it for awhile. Get rid of this mold. Some times you can't really discover what causes this, all those things that float around in the air contain surprising stuff that might shock us to see them under a microscope. Then start again. As for new starts, look in your local Health Food Stores, and if they carry the finished Kombucha, buy a bottle or two. Pour one bottle into two quart jars and add a dash of Apple Cider Vinegar, and fill with the cooled sweetened tea. And do remember to cover them well and rubber band them. Lots of folks say to use boiled cloth dish towels, but I, myself, use new paper towels and get real good results. MAKE SURE THAT YOU ARE STARTING WITH STERILIZED JARS!! Don't let the previous molds continue into this generation. If you can't find any Kombucha drink locally, go to e-bay, there you'll find some for sale. And/or go to one of the sites for Kombucha, there you'll find some for sale quite often. Just remember, when you get clean Scobys, you can freeze some of them for later. Also, you can get some real strong K tea, and soak some cotton balls in it and dry them for later. I did that as an experiment, and forgot them for=2 0nearly 10 months, soaked them in sweet tea and got another start. I'll admit that the first " mother " was thin, but each Scoby after that was stronger and thicker. The tea was georgous!
