Guest guest
Is it true that ammonia kills mold but doesn't remove its stain and bleach removes mold stain but doesn't kill mold? Guest guest
More or less. Bleach is about the only thing that removes mold stain. There is a microbial culture called EM that will also remove the mold stain, and kill the mold, but I never got into it much. Another approach though is to use borax. Borax kills mold, plus it soaks into wood or plaster some and keeps the mold from coming back. Bleach and ammonia both evaporate, so they don't prevent a recurrence. Borax is somewhat toxic ... eating a little bit won't hurt you, but eating or absorbing a lot of boron will kill you. So I don't think it's a good idea to use it, as some people do, sprinkled on the carpet to kill fleas, because animals might ingest it. But washing a solution on the walls seems safe enough, and it seems to work nicely for mold. Here is a good writeup: http://blackmold.awardspace.com/kill-remove-mold.html On Sun, Feb 20, 2011 at 7:28 AM, <econurbs@...> wrote: > Is it true that ammonia kills mold but doesn't remove its stain and bleach > removes mold stain but doesn't kill mold? Guest guest
Hydrogen peroxide (food grade which is 33%) is also excellent for stains and killing mold. F.
