Guest guest
I have kefir grains ... they look like little cauliflowers and are kind of spongy. You just drop them into milk and it makes kefir. They grow (esp. in organic pasteurized milk!) and then you have lots. Very cheap, and unlike the " starters " you don't need to sterilize the milk. You can use raw milk, although sometimes that changes the nature of the kefir some (more thin, more our less sour, more stringy, etc) depending on what is going on with the cow. The grains act as a " house " for the bacteria and yeast, and keep them strong, in a way that doesn't happen if you just use the kefir as a starter for the next batch. There are groups that do kefir-grain trading. My grains are a little a-typical (they create something more like yogurt, it's not pourable like kefir normally is) so you should probably try one of the groups. Guest guest
Hi Al, I have grains, just write me off list if you want some. Mine make great kefir even with raw milk. Millie
Guest guest
What you want are kefir grains, either water or milk. I suggest you join this group where you will find a lot of info on kefir and they are very helpful to newcomers. /?yguid=404462596 Different members also have grains available to share, some for sale and some gifted. You might also try your local freecycle or craigs lists and put an ad in the wanted. For detailed, extensive info on kefir this site is often referred to: http://users.sa.chariot.net.au/~dna/kefir_cheese.html I was gifted with milk grains and my neighbor purchased water grains and we shared so we both have both kinds of grains. a ----- Original Message ----- From: Al Hi, I'm getting ready to try kefir. I went to New Frontiers and all they had was yogourmet kefir starter.
Guest guest
Hi Al, The yogourment kefir starter is not real live grains and I do not believe it will reproduce (at least very many times). The " grains " are alive and will live forever with proper care. There is a kefir group that I also belong to and someone there may be able to ship you grains,(just search the ) if you are ever down in the valley I can give you some however I do not ship :-) Amberly > > Hi, > I'm getting ready to try kefir. > > I went to New Frontiers and all they had was yogourmet kefir starter. > > I saw else where on the web talk about kefir grains and kefir powder and kefir drink. > . > I guessed that the difference is that grains are some kind of hard structure that has the good stuff growing on or in it and is reusable since there is talk about collecting the grains for the next batch. > > Is the power a one time use thing? > > The drink is pasteurize and not a live food anymore. > > Does anyone know if Yogourmet kefir starter grains or powder? > I'm trying to find something that is reusable. > > I'm in Flagstaff, Az some my options are limited. > Al >
