Guest guest
I cannot remember that we've had more than a handful of posts where someone became ill following their first treatment. I can't remember anyone discontinuing it. You might look through past posts under " first shot " or " first treatment. " This is a high risk group for upper respiratory stuff as it is. Guest guest
Yesterday I had my 7th zolair shot. The shot I had in January was not administered by my regular nurse. The shot hurt, I had a big bruise and I had a knot there for a few days. The bruise lasted the better part of a week. When I told my nurse about it, her comment was they had other patients who had complained about the same nurse and the way she gave the xolair shots. I also told her that I thought she injected the xolair rather quickly compared to the way it was usually administered. Then she told me that it was very important for it to be administered very slowly--and that is the way she does it. I never have a bruise and I never have a knot when she does the injection. I have two questions about the injection that seemingly caused such a reaction. What do you mean by 2 1/2 treatments? (I get 1 shot once a month--the lowest dose.) I am not a nurse, a doctor, nor an expert in any field of medicine, but is there anyone else who gets this much all at once? The second question I have is: how slowly was this shot administered? There are about 60 xolair patients in the clinic where I get my shot and the nurse told me that they have had only one patient who had an adverse reaction and that was a very mild reaction. The only other problem is making sure all of the nurses administer the xolair very slowly and in the right place! This clinic has seen remarkable results in their patients, very similar to many of the stories related here. One other side comment--several months ago, one of the nurses mentioned to me that they had spent one full day at a xolair workshop/clinic, learning as much as they could about the drug. That made me feel good! I hope that your doctor can help you determine whether your reaction was actually from the xolair or from something that was already at work in your system. Oh--one other thing I want to restate: everyone reacts differently to the xolair. Some people begin to feel relief right away. For others, relief comes after the third or fourth shot; for others it takes a whole year. For others, the relief comes very slowly over a longer period and it is only by looking back that one begins to see progress with the xolair, such as fewer uses of steroids, fewer needs for the albuterol or neb, longer periods of free breathing, and fewer trips to the emergency room or hospital stays. Only you and your doctor can decide about continuing the xolair, but if your doctor thinks it will help you, then be patient and give it a chance to work. I just thought of something else: the nurse told me they had one patient who had to stop his xolair shots because of his insurance and his asthma has gradually gotten worse again, whereas on the xolair he had begun to experience relief from severe attacks. Sad that the insurance and lack of money is keeping this man from getting his shots. The clinic did try to get him some help. I think they are still working on it. HAVE A GREAT DAY EVERYONE. AFTER HAVING A BEAUTIFUL DAY YESTERDAY, WE HAVE ANOTHER CLOUDY, MISTY DAY WITH A COOL FRONT SUPPOSEDLY MOVING IN THIS MORNING! I PLAN TO HAVE A GREAT DAY ANYWAY! REMEMBER: TALK WITH YOUR DOCTOR. Guest guest
I'm up to number 3, and always bruise, but I take a fair amount of aspirin. My first injection reaction was the worst. Three days in bed with what felt like flu aches and pains, but was obviously not sick. I believe the word would be arthroneuralgia. No swelling or other symtoms, just pain. I've been more aware of my joints since I began Xolair, but it's nothing like those first 3 days. And I'm still waiting for Xolair to really kick in. Have had endless sinus infections since I began too. My family physician said that he wasn't surprised, that altering one's immune system is bound to have side effects. I'm willing to give Xolair the year I'm approved for. > > > > Has anyone had relatively upleasant reaction to first treatment (2- > 1/2 > > doses)of Xolair? Guest guest
Hi fellers - so nice to have so many responses to my " what happened " post. I'm exploring various ideas for what happened. I've had chronic sinus infection for years - four sinus surgeries so far - one at Duke when they did a sinus " D & C " to get rid of the MRSA. We're taking a new approach that my sinus and lung problems are caused by years of sinus inflammation as much as by allergies. My IgE untreated is in excess of 900, but prednisone brings it down to only 300, so we're looking at sort of a reverse synergistic effect in which the irritated sinuses interact with the allergies to make the whole respiratory system a piece of crap. I feel fine with prednisone, but don't like its side effects - five or six bowel movements per day plus playing hell with the libido, which at 72 is fairly threatened to begin with. Woe is me, although reading the woes of others makes me feel fairly lucky I'm not worse. However, I'm kind of curious re whether I may have gotten set up with an excessive dosage to begin with. I received what the nurse referred to as two-and-a-half doses. That was two full hypos plus a third where the nurse squirted out half before injecting. I have no idea how much stuff that is, but I think it's about $1,300 worth. At any rate, can anyone simplify the dosage data that has been bandied about? All these kgs and mgs are confusing. I'm a fat ohldepharte weighing in the upper 200 lb. range and I have no concept of how much of the goodies I should get. I've got a pulmonology dude plus a ENT guy, an infectious disease control cat and my primary care doc all working on this. Hopefully they'll figure out a cure before I drop dead of old age. Has anyone ever heard of Theophylline? I have a friend with COPD who says it worked well for her when she had symptoms similar to mine. Guest guest
Nothing has come through for me since Sept 10, until a message from arrived this morning, which appears to be a response to the Sept 10 post. by Penny Houle. That suggests he replied some days ago and the forwarding was delayed. I went to and see if an InfectionAndInflammation3 list has popped up ... it hasn't, and there are no undelivered messages readable online for infections. I'm cc'ing you directly on this message as I have also had some issues with taking several days to deliver replies to (other than this one). mail is getting nearly as flaky as ao-hell these days ... --Bob amydent9 wrote: what happened to the list? is it closed ? are we on the speical closure 3 list? amy
