I'm sorry Stucky, but you are way off base with your

understanding of a pain management specialist.

Unfortunately it seems like you haven't found a good

one. A good pain management program is multi-faceted.

A large part of what they do is diagnosic, as well as

procedures like injections and radio-frequency

ablations of nerves, etc. They also use many different

types of medication, the majority NOT narcotics, in

conjunction with other therapies. Some pain clinics

offer a psychologist to help the chronic pain sufferer

learn to cope, and to keep their mind set in a healthy

direction. Pain clinics may also refer you for massage

therapy, physical therapy and acupuncture. The overall

job of a pain physician is to diagnose the source of

pain, and to go after it in many different ways. Note:

pain physicians will tell you they do not expect to

cure or fix your pain, the goal is you help you be

able to function, reduce pain and hopefully keep you

physically able to work. A large number of pain

specialists will refure to prescribe narcotics to most

everyone, but every doc has their own philosophy on

narcotic use. I would guess that as many people here

have pain docs, each doc practices very differently

from the rest. I've had six back surgeries now, and

before this last one, I couldn't even get percocet

from my pain doc, just to be able to work. I was

living in extrordinary pain and was prescribed nothing

but Tramadol for it. My pain at work was so bad I was

having cardiac arrythmias and still they refused to

prescibe anything stronger. As I result, I had to

leave my job. Please don't jump to conclusions about

all pain docs based solely on your experiences. I'm

sorry that yours has nothing to offer you but drugs.

Oh, for those of us who have done every possible

surgery, therapy and injection...there are worse

things than addiction to drugs. Most people in pain

like us don't get " addicted " in the terms you think of

on the street. The pain is too great to get a nice

addictive buzz off it first of all. Tolerance is the

biggest thing we deal with,a nd having to increase the

dose. Side effects of increased narcotics are not

pleasant either. They can make you a cranky miserable

person.

If a person did get " addicted " to pain meds and was

miraculously " cured " and didn't need the meds anymore,

you simply wean yourself off with the doctors help.

Worst case scenario, rehab. Most of us are not going

to be miraculously cured. Like I said, there are worse

things than becoming addicted to the meds that relieve

your pain, hopefully enough to go to work or maintain

a somewhat normal life.

Please stop demonizing the use of narcotic based meds

for those who suffer everyday.
