Guest guest
Donna, Are you icing your back? I found that helped me a lot and I didn't need as many meds. You can buy on-line or at your drug store these very blue flexible cold packs. I bought a few so I could alternate them. The first month or so is going to be tough but you also have a right to contact your surgeon if you have any concerns about your recovery. Wishing you good healing! - spinal problems@...: luckyone40@...: Thu, 17 Jul 2008 11:29:08 +0000Subject: Cervical disc fusion surgery Hi Everyone,Well I had my fusion surgery last friday and lets just say that thiswhole thing hasn't been easy at all!. Guest guest
Hello Donna, I had the same fusion done in 02, and I was having the same sensations. I still feel like I have been slugged between the shoulder blades, Or a stabbing knife sensation. Some days are still worst than others, I keep getting spasms If I move the wrong way, and it can get bad sometimes. The lump in your throat, the doc explained to me was the new hardware your feeling, and the manipulation they had to do. Did they go thru the front of your neck? I still feel it sometimes, but I got use to it, I just have problems taking very large pills. Yes I would let your surgeon know just in case. I do feel your pain, it is a very rough surgery. I hope your recovery is as quick and as pain less as possible, geo Cervical disc fusion surgery Hi Everyone, Well I had my fusion surgery last friday and lets just say that this whole thing hasn't been easy at all!. Guest guest
Hi Arlene, Yes I had an anterior cervical disc fusion. I am on a muscle relaxant called Zanaflex. I have been on this dose of 2mg for over a year. And I have been using a heating pad almost continuously because that is what the neurosurgeon recommended. I started out using ice and continued it until I noticed I got better relief with the heat than with the cold..go figure. But those " spasms " i am having in my lower back are really annoying to the point of being painful. The neurosurgeon said my spinal cord was bruised from being so restricted, so maybe that has somethin to do with it..i dont know Donna spinal problems From: arlmar@... The muscle spasms are horrible, arent they? The more time that passes, the more " normal " you will feel..I didnt think so, but it did...and it also takes about a year to truly heal. Guest guest
I have had great luck by using the Soma 350mg 4 times a day. It is a very old medication but however it helps me more than any other muscle relaxer. My regimine is a Soma and 2 Lortab 10/500 every 4-6 hours. Depending on the elapse time and your current condition there may be other PT you can do to help with your pain. Also, what type of pain are you experiencing? Are you using ice packs? Have you started any PT. Finally, you said L1-S5.. did you mean L5/S1? Guest guest
Pam, What type of nerve damage.. pain or numbness/weakness? I too may likely have permanent damage. Most of mine is pain in my foot and numbness/weakness of my calf/hamstring. I have heard that B-12 vitamin helps with nerve regeneration. This was my third surgery and it took years for my foot not to hurt from the first one back in 2000. So don't give up hope..it may take a while but the nerve may eventually regenerate. I had my most recent surgery in May and I am now swimming almost every day in the ocean.. It is a great workout for me and allows me to get my endorphins up without risking further damage to my back. Keep the faith.. we will all get better and learn patience along the way! -gary spinal problems@...: houseboatpam@...: Sun, 20 Jul 2008 15:33:00 -0700Subject: Re: Cervical disc fusion surgery YES I MENT L5-S1 I HAD MY SUGURY DECEMBER 10,2007. Guest guest
Pam, It sounds like we have very similar symptoms. I had to stop taking B-12 since I now am dealing with GERD (Acid Reflux) although I heard about a B-12 you can take under your tongue. It feels like there is a rock in my back pocket when I sit down as well as in the arch of my foot when I walk. Much of my heel and outside of my foot is numb. Most of my weakness is in my calf muscle but every day I work at strengthening it. On a 1 to 10 I would say the pain I feel is a 4 hence I can tolerate it without pain meds at least for now. After my herniation much of my leg was numb so in a way I prefer pain to that much numbness because at least I know the nerves are " firing " . I also have pain on the top of my foot.. it feels like it is burned. I tried some of the Neurotin type drugs but they slowed my brain too much so I decided against them. I am still hopeful that I will get back more feeling in a year. This is definitely teaching me patience! My butt thing was a pilonidal cyst and my foot as a oh my gosh I cant remember the name but it was a tumor between the second and third toe on t,,,it's a mortons neuroma... Deb From: spinal problems [mailto:spinal problems ] On Behalf Of Rosenfeld Sent: Sunday, July 20, 2008 11:14 PM spinal problems Subject: RE: Cervical disc fusion surgery Pam, It sounds like we have very similar symptoms. Guest guest
I lived on lake mead at a resort. I took care of the houseboat rental fleet. Was docking a 70ft houseboat in heavy winds that were aginst me. I felt it happen but could not let go of the boat as i was the only one securing it. Next morning when i went to get out of bed i couldnt walk. I worked that way for 3 and 1/2 months before i fornd a doctor that new what was wrong with me. Of course workerscomp denied me so now along with everything else I am having to fight them in court. I went back to work to soon after the sugury and re aggervated the injury and had to end up quiting my job cause I couldnt do the work any more. Needless to say when i had to quit I also lost my place to live also. I am just now getting the doctor to say I can go back to some kind of a loght duty job. My husband has been greatr threw all this working long hours 6 days a week and taking care of me at the same time. Guest guest
Hi . I'm terribly shy and don't post often, but I do read posts every day. I'm also curious as to the discogram. I'm having one done Friday. L4-S1. My doc said it would be quite a bit worse than the facet injections or epidural injections that I had. She said she would not send me home in terrible pain and after the procedure she could sedate me if needed. The injections knocked me down for about 3 days afterward, so I'm expecting this will be longer. Sorry this isn't very comforting. I'm quite scared about it myself. I'm scared about the chance of the injected disks drying out. I'll keep ya in my prayers. > >> > > > Yes I have used a heating pad. Guest guest
thanks for responding- same here with the epidurals, in fact I had such a bad reaction to the prolotherapy that they tried by injecting my SI joint that it put me in a terrible pain cycle from end of April that Im just now working out of. I am nervous as well and getting another consult with a new Neurosurgeon to see if he thinks its necessary. Best to you, sounds like you have a compassionate Doctor. wendy RE: [spinal Disorders Support] Cervical disc fusion surgery> > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Not to but in here, but you have not used a heating pad > since surgery have you?> > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > __________________________________________________________> > Use video conversation to talk face-to-face with Windows Live > Messenger.> > http://www.windowslive.com/messenger/connect_your_way.html?> ocid=TXT_TAGLM_WL_Refresh_messenger_video_072008> > > > [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]> >> [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]No virus found in this incoming message.Checked by AVG - http://www.avg.com Version: 8.0.138 / Virus Database: 270.5.3/1563 - Release Date: 7/20/2008 12:59 PM[Non-text portions of this message have been removed] > >
Guest guest
Are they going to put u to sleep and then wake you up when they need to to reproduce the pain? This is the way my doc does it.it is very uncomfortable but helpful diagnostically to see what is causing your back pain. Guest guest
Hello, I had a discogram many years ago. I believe they gave no sedation, maybe just a little valium or something. It was uncomfortable yeas, but I don't remember it being horrific and I did have a positive result. I don't think it was all that bad to be honest. i went out shopping right after with my friend who drove me! Of course my doc somehow made it through to mu dura and caused a spinal headahce. I had one before after a myelogram and I told him I wouldn't do it if there was anyway a discogram could cause a spinal headache. He assured me it wasn't possible! Well that dummy made a BIG mistake and I got a nasty spinal headahce which he refused to take responsibility for over the next week. It was so painful, I have little memory of the details. All I remember was the excruciating pain. I've given birth naturally three times and even that doesn't come near to what this spinal headache was like! But again, this is so uncommon. It's not supposed to happen. Bevause of the spinal headache I don't remember how many day after I was sore. It sounds like you've been having MBBs...Medial Branch Blocks...for your facet injections, if they knock you down for three days. Even three is quite extensive. Do they seem to have trouble? Usually the MBBs hurt much worse than a regular facet block. They are both used to treat facet pain. I don't think the discogram should be worse than that. Also, do you have them give you IV sedation for your facet injections? I didn't used to, but I gave in and asked for it and it makes it so much easier to deal. Usually I wouldn't do it for a regular facet injection, but I definitely would for the MBBs. You should ask about it. Also, if you get a good response from the facet injections, you should consider trying denervation also called redio frequency lesioning/ablation or neurotomy. This procedure is only done after you have had good pain relief from two treatments from facet blocks. They put a needle into the Medial Branch nerve and instead of injecting local and steroids, they " burn " that nerve so that it will no longer tell your brain " ouch " . The relief from this can last anywhere from 2 to 10 months, depending on how long it takes your body to regrow the nerve. This is a much better choice than surgery for facet pain. Out of curiosity, why are you having your facets done? Have you had a fusion? -- RE: [spinal Disorders Support] Cervical disc fusion surgery> > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Not to but in here, but you have not used a heating pad > since surgery have you?> > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > ____________ _________ _________ _________ _________ _________ _> > Use video conversation to talk face-to-face with Windows Live > Messenger.> > http://www.windowsl ive.com/messenge r/connect_ your_way. html?> ocid=TXT_TAGLM_ WL_Refresh_ messenger_ video_072008> > > > [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]> >> [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]No virus found in this incoming message.Checked by AVG - http://www.avg. com Version: 8.0.138 / Virus Database: 270.5.3/1563 - Release Date: 7/20/2008 12:59 PM[Non-text portions of this message have been removed] > >
