Do the denervations give you enough relief that you think you could put off

surgery? Between that and PT and some meds...the longer you wait...the more

options are out there for you. Don't be afraid of a fusion if that's what your

body needs. After two laminectomies, your spine will become unstable as it dries

out and becomes more degenerated. The fusion really should help.

The problem is that having the first surgeries is what does us in. Many of us

will never be the same again. I had two lammies then had to have a fusion. The

BIG BOSTON DOC wanted to try something new and did a different type of fusion.

If the fusion actually took, I'd probably be doing great right now. Sadly it

didn't. I felt great for years while the screws held it all together, but when

they broke...ugh. I had a re-do and up one level last Feb. I'm doing much better

now, but my hardware has to come out. It's hurting too much.

The longer you wait or if you can afford to go to Germany for surgery, you will

have better options. For you I would suggest a disk replacement over fusion.

They will be doing multi-level replacements before long here. They've been doing

them in Germany for many years. If you have the fusion, you will not be able to

do a disk replacement. There are also a lot of up-and coming developments, they

are making huge strides in this area. Also, there is a new procedure called

Facet Replacement which looks promising. But again...it's new. I would want to

wait to see how it does before it's done on me...personally.

Yes.I got 5 years from injections, meds, facet blocks and denervations. I

had the first surgery..pain free for a year, then was walking up the stairs

carrying a can of coke I started to drop it and moved funny. The next

morning I could not get up out of bed and had to call 911..oh my gosh..the

next week is a blur.they kept me drugged for the next week..apparently all

I did was scream in pain.they had to put me to sleep to be able to get me in

the MRI machine. I had the second surgery 5/2006. The doc did not want to

do the laminectomy on the same level..but I asked him and told hin I would

accept the risk of the instability of the spine. I did great,. I walked 8

miles the day after surgery. I was pain free up until the beginning of

June. I had a ESI and for the first time ever I had increased pain after

the shot. I would prefer a artificial disk to a fusion..I only need

fusion.lllllllf at one level .

Does anyone have any experience with Piriformis Syndrome?

Apparently that is an issue for me along with everything else.

My Physical Therapist had me on my side yesterday and was using her elbow to try

to open up the Piriformis muscle which apparently can become fibrotic if in a

spasm too long and compress the sciatic nerve.

My sciatic nerve is going bananas this morning, lots of fasciulations in the

toes., and burning down the leg.

Yowie it aches to beat the band.

Ive tried icing, heat.. trying to stop the throbbing....

ugh....

Let me jump in hear....I just came back from Germany about a week

and a half ago, and had the disc replacement on one level. I agree with

, she is accurate regarding the fusion is the last stop once you have

fusion you can not go back. The other problem with fusion it usually leads

to more fusions.

I had a Dr that is considered the best in the world and has done over 5,000

of these procedures with high success rate.

If you have any questions let me know...also this disc corrects the Facet Joint

issue, I checked that out cause I have that issue, and that was because I waited

so long. I was caught up in the Workman's Comp system and waited almost

4 years of suffering horribly and then got help to get this done so I could at

least have a life back.

I am still in the recovery stage moving slowly...it does take time to heal.

Hope we can bring the help you need Deb....

the reason we are here..is to help each other find some answers that work for

us.

Blessings,

Howdee all,

What options are there before you have a cervical fusion?  I have stenosis

with some mild cord flattening. I can't go to Germany.  I see the surgeon at the

end of this month. It is  in the best interest of my family if I can avoid this

for at least a year.Any suggestions?  God bless.  IJ

Hello Ivan,

I don't know how long you've had your disc problem, but the longer

you can put off surgery, the better. Many times they are able to

improve on their own. The disc will sometimes " shrivel " up enough to

stop causing as much pain. I would start with physical therapy,

traction, possibly some facet joint or epidural injections, modifying

your movements to stay away from what flares you up, etc. In my case,

I'm wondering if the problems surgery/fusion might cause in the

future (adjacent disc problems, scar tissue, no relief from pain -

which I've been told is at least 50% possible) are worth living with

the limitations I have right now without a fusion. Every case is

different, and only you know what you can live with. Good luck!

I'm confused......My disc problem started around the 1st of the year

(wasn't too bad at 1st, but just never went away, then flared up

horribly in recent months). PT seemed to aggravate it, so I stopped

after talking w/my dr. Because it was so painful, I stopped doing

housework and anything physical 2 wks ago. It's felt the best in

quite a while (for now anyway). But " doing nothing " isn't the way to

live! Still hurts when I sit in some chairs, etc. (but at least I'm

not in tears from pain right now)

But after reading this post, I'm confused. I had no idea that the

disc could " shrivel up " enough to cause less pain. So a heriniated

disc isn't always herniated? My neurosurgeon appt is week after

next....I certainly don't want surgery if there are options. Also,

from everything I've read the epidural injections are rather

temporary?

Could someone clarify all this for me? Thanks

My first doctor took the epidural route with me. My issues were in the

L4-S1 area. Teh first epidural worked for a few days however, I dont

know whether I built a tolerance to it or whatever but by the 3rd

injection it wasnt working more than a few hours for me. My second

doctor said that depending on the nature of the injury, epidurals have a

mixed success record but it is only a temporary as it only masks the

pain and doesnt do anything to help the actual problem (in 99% of

cases).

There are other routes that can be taken however, I cannot really

comment on them as I went pretty much straight for the surgical route.

By the time I got to the second doctor, my situation had worsened to the

point that surgery was classified as " emergency " . Since the surgery, I

still have a few issues but the pain levels are more intermittent and

not nearly as intense. The doctor is still planning on another surgery

on the L4/L5 disk as the only one he did the forst time was the L5/S1.

The issues I am still experienceing may be due to the as of yet

unoperated upon disk, I don't know for sure.

nerve burning..I had 2 of them and had me pain free for 2 years. I now need

I had the burning sensation, fairly intense, down the length of my left

leg along with numbness in the calf and shin area. This was aleviated

only when I had the surgery. I assume that because of the lack of a disk

in there ( the MRI showed nothing left of it but scraps pre-surgery)

there was constant pressure being put on the nerves in that area. After

the cage was put in, I still get some numbness (oddly enough it is

usually in my thigh now) but I havent had the burning or electric

sensation in my legs in a while now.

It used to be bad enough to keep me awake at night or wake me up from

medicated sleep. It is gone now but considering the numbness still comes

and goes, I am a little afraid it will come back as my other disk

deteriorates.

The biggest problems I have now, post fusion, are nothing compared to

what I was dealing with before the surgery. I do attribute most of the

problems I have now to the other unoperated on disk that is failing.

Hopefully, my remaining problems will be soilved in the next surgery.

The surgery itself was no big deal. I went in the hosp at about 10 AM

and was out the following afternoon. I woke up from surgery at about

5:30 and they kept me dosed with push button morphine drip. Against

nurses orders, I got up and walked out to the nurses station at about 7

pm. They got all uptight but they also got me food which is the reason I

went out there (my nurse call button wasnt working). I was in post op

pain after my release for about 2 weeks then it levelled off to a

tolerable (learned) level. The doctor said the surgery went off really

well.

I wish you the best of luck in your surgery. I hope it goes as well for

you as I feel mine went for me.

I've seen several neurosurgeons about my disc problems, and this is

what one of them told me: Discs have very little blood supply. When

they herniate, they lose even that, or most of it, and the part that

is herniating out can, over the course of a year or so, shrink

somewhat. But the problem for most people is, of course, waiting it

out, and then not knowing in the end if it will work enough to help

you (and even small bulges in discs can cause pain). Other

neurosurgeons have also agreed that time may help. My brother is a

doctor/professor at a chiropractic college, and has repeatedly told

me (and he's also had a herniated disc), to give it as much time as

possible before surgery.

The pain management/anesthesiologist dr. I've been seeing told me

that, at most, 50% of people who have surgery are helped by it. As

for the epidural injections, I asked him if it's just a temporary

mask for the pain (which didn't sound too great to me). He said that

it's not just a mask. He said that the medicine/steroids they inject

are anti-inflammatory and give the tissues a chance to settle down

and heal on their own. From what I've heard, it's varies a lot from

person to person, and while somebody may get permanent relief from

it, someone else may get none. And I think that's the case with

surgery and every other treatment, too. That's what makes this

problem so frustrating for me -- it's very hard to know the right

thing to do! :-O

Good luck to you!

If U don't mind me chimming in on this subject, I would like to just say I agree

with you that it " s hard to decide what to do. The surgery may help yes, but what

else will it cause with the wear and tear it does to the disk above and below.

The epidurals may work and may not, I myself had a lot of them and trigger

points and I thought at first I was ok and went back to doing what I wanted to

do, needless to say, I will be paying for that the rest of my life. Little do we

know what the future will bring us, and making the right decision is a 50/50

chance. The big question is do we gamble on that 50%?, OR do we play it safe and

wait it out?, and in the end what damage has occured waiting?

You are so right being frustrated, and I pray you can make the right decission.

I've had c3/4 and 4/5 fused and destroyed c6 disk, the last comments by a

neurosurgeon and a pain spec, about my neck was its a mess, because it still

causes a lot of pain.

I apologize for bending your ear (eyes), my comments probably didn't help much.

Please, chime in all you want! ;)

While I don't wish these problems on anyone, it makes it easier to

know we're not alone. It has taken me over two years to start

accepting that there just may not be a " right " answer to my

situation. I wanted a solution, darn it! :) While I still struggle

with what next step to take, I think I'm finally starting to accept

that my life will always have these challenges and the more I try to

accept it and not focus on being a victim, the better I feel. But

it's rough sometimes, no doubt, esp. when I try to go about

my " normal " life and the symptoms flare up! I get caught up in the

fear of thinking I should be doing something that I'm not, and the

doctors aren't much help. I wish I had a shut-off switch for the

worry in my head! :)
