Guest guest
HI - I had L2-S1 laminectomy and foraminotomy along with some discectomies on 9/21/10. I had immediate relief form the sciatica I had prior to the surgery. but, I had a lot of surgical pain that may be what you are talking about which for me remained for about 8 weeks but I still have lower back pain that is coming from having DDD and lots of bad disks-in fact my surgeon said that I have no good disks- that was why he could not do fusions and why I will I guess have lower back pain until I reach a point of letting him do a full back fusion (C1-S1- UGH), or if God so sees it my back just stops hurting (LOL -PLEASE!). Recovery in my experience is different person to person and even surgery to surgery, it has to do with so many things. I have had 9 orthopedic surgeries and I have recovered differently each time (the worst was cervical fusion, the best shoulder surgery but I digress!). My surgeon said to walk as much as I could and that actually helped a lot in getting the pain reduced. I will say use whatever methods work for you to relieve pain until it subsides and you will recover better. Clinical studies have shown we recover more fully and better if we are pain free. so use whatever works for you be it, meds or ice, or electro-stimulation (TENS units), or heat, etc. I hope you feel releife soon! mark ________________________________ From: " dilbertwannabe@... I'm still in a lot of pain. But it seems to be muscular. I was hoping u could tell me those of u who have had open back surgery how long it has taken for you to feel some relief in the pain. And is there anything I can do to strengthen my muscles that u may have done. Sent from my Verizon Wireless BlackBerry
Guest guest
Hi , I didn't have a fusion, but I did have a laminectomy where I was opened up from L3 all the way to S1 and it took a good two months to stop the muscle spasms. The pain gets a little better each day and walking, walking, walking, is what made me feel better. Eventually one day you will get up and it will occur to you that you no longer hurt from the surgery pain. Good luck and I hope it eases off!! Barb > > Hi everyone. I had surgery on Dec 9th. Guest guest
I've had many diff kinds of spine surgery & I think the answer differs with what you've had. I would hope you notice a diff in neuro pain immediately as you seem to have. The muscles take longer but I would hope they'd start to ease up by 6 wks post op and then it might take a year before full recovery. Strengthening abd muscles is important. Don't do anything until your doc gives you the go ahead. Good Luck! KateFrom: dilbertwannabe@... Guest guest
My apt with my Dr was good my xrays were good he said I go back in 2 mnths for more xrays. He said he doesn't want to start me on any physical therapy for a few mnths he wants my soft tissues to heal first. How do I work my ab muscles with out hurting my back? Guest guest
I wouldn't do anything if your doc says not to. That said, with a sit up chair you can do sit ups with your neck and back supported. Even better - You can do pelvic tilts on the floor. If you don't know how, I'm sure there's an explanation online. The minute your pain increases - stop. In addition, You can lie on the floor and holding your spine flat against the floor, slide your legs slowly down from a bent knee position and back up again. I bet there are others online. You don't want to strain those spine muscles. It would be good to walk everyday if you can. Take it easy! 2mos will fly by. From: dilbertwannabe@...
