has any of the doctors you see ever told you how destructive the

cortisone shots to your spine are. One injection can cause a disease called

Arachnoiditis a disease that will leave you in intolerable pain for the rest of

your life. Maybe you could look it up on the computer and read about it. I too

have lung disease and I am on steroids year around so I know the damage this

drug can do but we have to breathe. But the injections are a different thing.

Re: New to Group....and how to sort out

hip pain

I guess this is a Misery loves company thing.

We, meaning, myself, my spine doctor, my hip doctor, my rheumatologist (for

Rheumatoid Arthritis), and keeping my General Doc, Pain doc, and for good

measure since some of my pain is being caused by just trying to breathe, my Lung

Doctor. So, the team is trying to figure out where the pain is coming from, the

Hip joint or the spine (and then what part of the spine.) I had L4 to S1 fused,

with metal to keep everything together. It has done everything my Spine Doc said

it would and the Pain level on my lower back is MUCH reduced. Reduced to the

point where I can really tell when I am having pain in my Hip/Groin area. Xrays

show degeneration in my left hip, almost to the point of needing replacement,

and the right hip isn't there yet to quote the Hip Doc. He also said, he thought

the pain was being caused by my spine. So back to the MRI machine, and even I

could read/see on the screen where the new damage is on my lumbar spine. So we

(did I say my doctor are great at being a team) decided to try a Epidermal

injection for my spine, see if that made any difference, and then do cortisone

shots in both of my hips, and do MRI of my hips at the same time. The spine

injections helped some, not great, but a bit. The cortisone shots to my hips,

help greatly for a couple of days and the lidocaine is wearing off now. I did

notice that I just didn't feel anything on my left hip from the shot, not the

numbing needle going in or getting the cortisone shot to walking later on. That

is probably nerve damage from surgery to my left hip five years ago. Probably

also means that I would have pain if I could 'feel' it. lol So, it's both my

spine and the hip joints causing my pain. I also get to deal with pain in the

thoracic section of my back by just trying to breathe by a as yet undiagnosed

thing going on with my lungs. My lungs are working at 71 percent of capacity

I hope everyone who is dealing with these things get them sorted out and dealt

with. For me just being able to write out all this help a great deal. The thing

that really does get to me is that this is in addition to the day to day chronic

diseases I have.

So please think healing thoughts for each other,

No I do not however I do know people who got Arachnoiditsi after only one spinal

injection. I also know women who have contracted Arachnoiditis after an epidural

for labor pain. It may not happen to you or who ever is getting the injection

but do you want to take the chance? Do you want to encourage a friend or

relative to do it to see if it will help their pain only to set them up for a

life time of pain that only gets worse never better.I speak out against the

epidurals every chance I get people may think I am a nut case but I dont' care

as long as the person reading the warning thinks twice about getting one of

these injection and it may save them from a life of pain.

Why did you have part of the sacrum removed I have never heard of this. Do you

have a good doctor do you have a Pain specialist? Where do you live?Has anyone

said anything to you about the spinal disease called Arachnoiditis? It causes

chronis intractable pain that will last for life if you dont' get the help you

I just found out about the A disease (don't want to see how it's spelled) on

this site   Copied and pasted for my doctor to see if I have it.

I had to have the sacrum cut out because of a tumor that was thought to be

cancerous...it wasn't but just as bad...it spreads like cancer so wide resection

was the safest thing to do. 90% cure of castlemans disease if you have wide

resection of the tumor. That's why the sacrum was cut out. Alpt of people with

chordoma and lymphoma have the same surgery for sacral tumors. I did it for pain

but also to save my life. I live in Ohio but went to johns hopkins for the

surgery. they do more of these than anyone else.

Are you in constant pain? Do you have a pain doctor a good pain specialist who

is willing to work with you to experiment with different drugs until you find

the one that gives you the best relief? I feel so bad for you I can't imagine

the pain you must have gone through. You can only find Arachnoiditis on an MRI.

I am sure you have had them too. The disease is sometimes worse that the

surgerical site it usually shows up withing the first year after surgery but

that's not true for all cases. Mine was diagnosed 26 years after I began having

the surgeries. But I live a fairly normal life with a few limitations. I know

this is a lot of questions but if you have Arachnoiditis you need all the

information you can get.
