Guest guest
Hi Joyce. I just started with a new pain management doctor for my arachnoiditis. I am on the Fentynal patch 50 mcg, percocet 7.5 for breakthrough pain, neurontin 300 mg 4 x daily and baclofen 20 mg 4 x daily. He will probably make adjustments to baclofen and neurontin at a later date. He didn't want to change everything at one time. Sharon
Guest guest
That sounds like what I was on about a year ago. I couldn't function. I felt like my entire life had been taken away from me because I was always so drugged up. I changed mine around so I could finally find a combo that reduces the pain but I am still able to drive and function. Good luck on the combo. > > Hi Joyce. Guest guest
Sharon if this doctor can't or won't help you with pain issues you might want to look elsewhere. A lot of doctor won't go out on a limb to help their patients but some will. My doctor experimented with me for 6 months to find the right drug in the right strength for me. In 8 years nothing has changed and as long as I am careful I remain pain free. Janice Medication for arachnoiditis Hi Joyce. I just started with a new pain management doctor for my arachnoiditis. Guest guest
Janice, you must have misunderstood. I never said my doctor wasn't helping me with my pain issues. So far I am pleased with the regimen he has me on and I really like him as a physician. I was just responding to Joyce's question of what pain medications we take for arachnoiditis. > > Sharon if this doctor can't or won't help you with pain issues you might want to look elsewhere. Guest guest
I was on Fentanyl + more for years with Arachnoiditis and was very much drugged up although at the time was grateful for the relief so was willing to put up with that. Later I learned other ways of coping but one thing that has been a fantastic help is medical marijuana. It has been proven to work on nerve pain where nothing else really does and does not have the toxcicity rx meds do. If you live in a state where it is legal it would be a good idea to look into it. Guest guest
I live in OHIO and would LOVE to try medical marijuanna. I saw a sign for it at OSU, a main hospital here in Columbus but haven't seen it in the last few years. I know it's banned here and don't know how they were using it but I will ask my pain doctor. I would LOVE a more natural way of dealing with my pain. Perhaps he will know if there are plans to make it legal in Ohio. I would prefer that to some of these opiods/constipation etc. I know a couple of people who use it for pain, cataracts and cancer...and they say it works! Guest guest
Lynne, It may have been a chapter of Norml collecting signatures for a petition or recruiting for a medical trial. There is a drug called Marinol that may be helpful for you. It will cut down on nausea from pain meds and may help some with pain. The ingredient in the plant that is very effective for pain is not in that drug, which only contains the ingredient that makes people high (THC) Alot of people are able to cut down on narcotics while taking Marinol. I am in Florida where we are trying very hard to bring it to our state. I am not sure right now if Ohio has something going on. There are 15 legal states with several others with legislation on the books. Guest guest
Thanks to everyone for your replies. My friend, Lena, besides very high dosages of narcotics and neurontin, is also on high dosages of Marinol. For her, it seems to help more with depression than with pain. So, is it true, then, that the medical marijuana helps more with pain than the Marinol? Of course, though she could get it at home, I'm not sure they would let her have it at a rehab. place, where she is now. Joyce
Guest guest
I'm sorry Diane but I don't understand this part of what you wrote. Can you rephase for me please? The ingredient in the plant that is very effective for pain is not in that drug, which only contains the ingredient that makes people high (THC) Alot of people are able to cut down on narcotics while taking Mari.... So this drug does not have thc (which (thc) works on the pain, right? But this drug does help with pain some. I will have to look that up. Thanks for the name of it. I would LOVE to cut back meds. Subloxone stops the effectiveness of opiods. I don't want to take that. Because I've heard if you need surgery and need opiods that suboxone isn't strong enough to kill surgical pain. And then the opiods don't work..which would mean in order to have surgery you would have to come off of the Sub drug and then have surgery....and what if it's a heart attack and you don't have time to come off of the Sub drug? So I declined it...for that reason. Is the drug you .mentioned (Marinol) like that? I guess I need to google it and check it out. Thanks.  . ________________________________ From: Diane Kearns-Carlstrom <shadoseer1205@...> spinal problems Sent: Sun, April 10, 2011 3:14:08 PM Subject: Re: Medication for arachnoiditis Lynne, It may have been a chapter of Norml collecting signatures for a petition or recruiting for a medical trial. Guest guest
I will try to clarify. Cannabis (Marijuana) Has THC (gets you high) and CBD's don't get you high. There are many CBD's. Some are neuroprotectants, antiinflammitory's, some have very strong antitumor peoperties (The Natl Cancer Inst just came out and posted a report saying it should be used by oncologists then the Gov't threw a hissy fit and it was taken down). Marinol has THC and Sesame Oil. It is the best thing that can be done for nausea but is also helpful, somewhat for neuro pain the opiates don't touch. If someone is on Marinol and has to do a regular UA at pain mgmt, there is no way to tell if they have been using the plant or the pill as the test is for THC (I am not suggesting breaking the law if one lives in a state where it is not legal). There are hundreds if not thousands of pages out there with info on mmj. If anyone has any questions please write to me privately at shadoseer1205@... as i don't want to stir up any trouble potentially here. Please be careful with neurontin. There is considerable controversy surrounding this drug. Guest guest
Marijuana is illegal in every state not because of state laws but because of Federal laws. But it is happening all over the country and it is helping a lot of people manage their pain. The THC is what they are looking for it is what eases the pain. Just be careful in all that you do and make sure your doctor knows what your doing often some of the doctors can and will tell you where to get the stuff. Janice Be very careful of Nuerontin. My sister just overdosed on it and almost died. But she was only following the doctors orders and it almost cost her her life. She is fine now but please raise or lower the amount of Nuerontin when there is someone with you to make sure your ok. Medication for arachnoiditis >> > > > >> > > > >> > > > >> > > > Hi Joyce. Guest guest
Hi Janice, Glad to hear your sister has recovered. Part of the marketing of Neurontin was that it had a very 'High top end' meaning they thought it safe to give massive amounts. There was a whole twisted idea to push this on to as many as possible to make Pfizer even richer. It is the CBD's not the THC that is pain relieving in mmj, although the high from the thc kinda makes one forget alot of the pain. Cannabis is illegal federally due to the Controlled Substances Act. The CSA has classified it as being highly addictive and prone to abuse and having no medical use whatsoever. Under the CSA Cannabis is more dangerous than cocaine. all statements are incorrect and in 2003 the us govt took a patent on Cannabis for medical use due to it 'neuroprotective qualities' which in itself should have changed it's scheduling to CII from CI. Right now Marinol is a CIII and less controlled than Morphine and Oxycodone. This is all very confusing. Mass will probably be the next state to ok medical use. Just because the state approves medical use the federal govt can jump in and over ride that. The fed has said it won't go after patients and largely sticks to that but on occasion will do so. The American Medical association advised President Nixon against criminalising it but he had another agenda. The public has been very misinformed about this for decades and there are many that are tryin to correct that through education.. One very important thing to know is that it has been used for thousands of years medicinally, in religious ceremonies and recreationally and there has been zerio deaths due to overdose. It is much, much safer than the hardcore rx drugs given to chronic pain pts. Guest guest
I believe that each person should have some say over their care. If their doctor knows what they are doing and he/she approves and it helps with the pain then go for it. My next door neighbor just started smoking pot as she has really bad unconlrolled diabetes 7 insulin injections a day. She says the pain in her lower legs and feet is so bad at times she has thought about ending her life but now she swears it is working and she is feeling better now since she can remember. Guest guest
Janice ( I used to have that name but liked Lynne better so I changed my name...never met another Janice! Feels odd keying my old name! Re: doctors can tell you how to get MJ. I have chronic pain and glocoma and cataracts (not ready for surgery but soon). I saw a sign for it in a hospital even though it's illegal in my state. Then the sign went away.....I don't know if you have my private email but if you do and live in Ohio can you tell me who would help with this? And then of course my pain doctor would have to approve of it as I'm tested and not allowed to take anything he doesn't approve. (which is good!) keeps abusers from making our lives miserable. But to be above board and get permission I'd like to know who to talk to about it. I wish I had followed that sign that I saw in the hospital but I wasn't in pain and didn't have eye problems then so it didn't phase me except that I thought it was odd to see a sign like that. Thanks.   ________________________________ From: Janice <faraway1@...> spinal problems Sent: Mon, April 11, 2011 3:24:06 PM Subject: Re: Medication for arachnoiditis  Marijuana is illegal in every state not because of state laws but because of Federal laws. Guest guest
I live in Southern California and I am sure if I wanted it I could get it. In fact friends of mine have offered to get it for me. There were shops all around selling it with a prescreption from a doctor who is willing to prescribe it. But I could drive 40 miles away to buy it with a prescription. There are shops everywhere in California. As long as the person buying it has that prescriptions the shops will be proud to sell it to you. Not long from now it will be legal. Then there will be pot farms every where also. My daughter owns 22 acres of land I wonder if she has thought of a pot farm on her property. They say it's a great business. There seems to be a great stigma about buying pot for pain relief. I wish I could talk my sister into smoking it or eating it in food. So far she is adamant about not taking it or using it but her pain must be horrible for her. She has 2 back surgeries and they were miserable failures. Then an x-ray technican pushed her down on the examining table and broke her back. There is nothing that can be done to help with that kind of pain. She will live like she is now for the rest of her life. I am just rattling off and on. I am sorry. Janice Medication for arachnoiditis >> > > > >> > > > >> > > > >> > > > Hi Joyce. Guest guest
Ask your doctor about it or research on the computer to find the answers you need. You can't beat the computer for knowing it all.
