I know the age issue. I am 43 and had to file for social security disability in

january. I had lots of people say you will never get it at your age and acted

like i am just lazy. Kills me because i loved my job and i Would much rather be

working. Or the you are to young to park there comments. But hang in there and

we do what we have to do.

Re: Carts in Stores

I considered using one of those motorized carts a couple of weeks ago

(for what would have been the first time), but didn't end up doing so.

What's the procedure? Who do you ask for " permission " ? Or are they set

up so that you can just start them up and take one yourself? I still

can't get over the paranoia that people will look at me funny because

I am so young. A few months ago, i was headed toward needing them

permanantly, but right now I'm recovering from surgery, so I'm hoping

that I'll recover to a point where I will no longer feel like one. But

only time will tell.

In the situation a couple of weeks ago, part of the reason I didn't

really press the issue and try to find out what to do was because the

trip was an optional type of trip (to a museum) -- I felt bad that my

preschool aged daughter has been so cooped up lately. As others have

mentioned, at least at stores there are shopping carts to lean on.

I am not ashamed to say I have used those carts on a few occassions myself. It

helped me to get out of the house with my family early on when they wanted to

shop at walmart on a saturday and I had just gotten out of Spine Fusion Surgery.

I used them right after my Hysterectomy and also the first week after

Gallbladder surgery and when I was supposed to be on bed rest for pregnancy but

had to shop for food for my family. They are there when we need them and they

may be a nucense but I know that anyone using them would like nothing more than

to be able to move around the store without them.

I think I will be using the little sit down carts very soon. I hate the darn

things too. They fill up the whole isle and you can't get in or out of an isle.

I have always critized them now I may have to have one or use them ones in the

store. The things we do in the name of pain.

I was trudging through Lowes parking lot one day a while back, lugging

some awkward building supplies, when a great looking guy ran over to help

me..then I realized, it wasn't' because he wanted to get to know me, it was

because I reminded him of, with luck, his mother..without luck..his

Oh well, it's better than those awkward middle years where I was too old

to hit on, too young to elicit sympathy.

I'm holding off on those motorized shopping carts though, I am I am....

LOL. You just go to the service desk and ask for the key so you can use it. I

was down in Disneyworld and I cant walk very far before the pain starts. Well it

started and I went back and rented one of those mobile carts and I tell you it

sure let me enjoy the park with a lot less pain. I wasnt impressed at the price

of renting the cart but I dont think I could have done a Disney Park without the

cart.

you walk right up and get on the cart and there will be instructions on

it jsut follow them and away you go. Don't worry about anyone looking at you.

You do what makes you more comfortable and if someone gives you a dirty look

send them a picture of your middle finger on each hand.

You dont' have to ask permission you just get on and go.

Thanks, Janice. I guess I've also been holding off because it would feel

like somehow admitting that I am old. Plus, could you imagine handling a

three-year-old while using one of those things? Ugh!

I dont' know if there set up to put a child onboard but you can check it out and

see if there is a spot to strap a child down on. It would have been great for me

a few years ago when I had 3 little girls who were all under 5 years old. But

seriously Check them out and use them if you want to. I didn't know so many of

us needed something to hold onto as the went through the store but I was wrong

it's a lot of us who need something to hold onto. Janice
