Oh Janice..You sound EXACTLEY like me! I have DDD and spinal stenosis. Aren't

you sick of needing a shopping cart for a pack of gum? LOL

I am hoping I am approved for the spinal stimulator and that it will help this

problem.

Back troubles/spinal stenosis

I need some help here if anyone can help please reply to this message.I have

been having trouble for the last 3 weeks. If I try to walk without holding onto

something the pain gets so bad I can hardly stand it. Also if I try to walk very

far my body bends forward and the more I push myself the worse the pain gets and

I bend over more and more. I have learned that if I dont' have a buggy to hold

onto I have to stay in the car and let mom do the shopping. Does anyone else

have this? The doctor said it is called spinal stenosis. I know what the words

mean but I would like to talk to others who this same thing has happened to. He

told me it may be time to think about an electric chair to get around in since

this is part of the progression of Arachnoiditis and it could get much worse. I

have just yesterday put a shower chair in the bathroom as I can't stand long

enough to take a shower. This is pretty depressing.

I use my handicapped plackard and I have even had people ask me what my

disability was since I was taking up a space they clearly needed. I tell them to

go to hell. Has this happened to anyone else? I get a lot of dirty looks also.

I have a placard too, and yes,I get dirty looks also. I do walk with a limp

lately because my knee swells daily so the looks are less.

LOL..I also pick up a cart in the parking lot.

I was trudging through Lowes parking lot one day a while back, lugging

some awkward building supplies, when a great looking guy ran over to help

me..then I realized, it wasn't' because he wanted to get to know me, it was

because I reminded him of, with luck, his mother..without luck..his

grandmother..:).

Oh well, it's better than those awkward middle years where I was too old

to hit on, too young to elicit sympathy.

I'm holding off on those motorized shopping carts though, I am I am....

I think I will be using the little sit down carts very soon. I hate the darn

things too. They fill up the whole isle and you can't get in or out of an isle.

I have always critized them now I may have to have one or use them ones in the

store. The things we do in the name of pain.

Nope your not the only one. Were starting a buggy club. I have found so many

people in just this one sight who has to use a buggy to hold onto so they can

get through the store. What happens if you don't have a buggy to support

yourself? I become all bent over and the pain in my back and abdominal region of

my body is horrific. On a 1 to 10 I am a 10. I begin to gasp for air then I

begin to cry then I just sit down no matter where I am. I have to sit or lay

down as fast as possible. The pain gets better if I can sit down real quick. I

am glad I bought the subject up I have found many of us here that are doing the

same thing. I thought I was the only one. But as you can see the response has

been big. I am glad that I am not the only one.

Janice -

YES!! I hate when people judge - I guess they are jealous and just used to

everyone being a cheat!

As fara s the stenosis diagnosis I too have both DDD and stenosis, but I had

decompression surgery in September 2010 and it has gotten rid of the sciatic

pain, now I am about where you are when I shop because of my hip which is now in

need of replacement...Stenosis is the narrowing of the spinal canal which puts

pressure on the nerve root. I also had pinched nerves going out the foramen

(holes exiting the spine) and those were cleared out by removing bone too!

Amazingly the sciatica is gone, but because I was a very poor candidate for

fusion I did not have that and still have lower back pain. What I am not sure

about is if you have had fusion surgery and then get spinal stenosis if you can

still have decompression surgery - probably not!

Hoping you get some relief!

Mark

Mark you may be right about surgery. But if my general health were better I

would take the chance just because the pain is so bad and the doctor said it is

liable to get worse. He is recommending a wheel chair but there are so many

glitches that come with using the chair that it may not happen. My house is very

small and I don't know if the chair will fit through the doorways then getting a

lift so I can get it on my truck and get it off by myslef so I can be

independent as I have always been.

I had a fusion back in the late 80's and then had to have the metal removed in

2003. It was a complete success. I think I need an MRI now to see exactly what

and where my problems are now. I realize that after 5 surgeries things are bound

to change lie the spinal canal hardening and narrowing of the canal is bound to

happen. I am not used to being home bound I am a very active woman and to have

to sit or lay down all the time is not me. But the time has come for me to slow

down and accept restrictions on my body. My pain doctor is great and he has made

several reccomendations like more drugs or different drugs none of which I want

but common sense tells me that I need to listen to him. I am 61 in a couple of

weeks and my age along with my health is telling me to stop look around and

accept the limitations that my body is placing on me.

I know how your feeling about all of this thing. The DD is enough to stop you in

your tracks but add all that extra pain that comes with stenosis and you start

hating life. I know that the pain I am in sometimes is almost more than I can

bare.

You take care and if you need someone I am right here.

Back troubles/spinal stenosis

>

> I need some help here if anyone can help please reply to this

message.I have been having trouble for the last 3 weeks. If I try to walk

without

holding onto something the pain gets so bad I can hardly stand it. Also if I

try to walk very far my body bends forward and the more I push myself the

worse the pain gets and I bend over more and more. I have learned that if I

dont' have a buggy to hold onto I have to stay in the car and let mom do

the shopping. Does anyone else have this? The doctor said it is called

spinal stenosis. I know what the words mean but I would like to talk to others

who this same thing has happened to. He told me it may be time to think

about an electric chair to get around in since this is part of the progression

of Arachnoiditis and it could get much worse. I have just yesterday put a

shower chair in the bathroom as I can't stand long enough to take a shower.

This is pretty depressing.

i don't know, telling them to go to hell isn't as much fun as making them run

and hide... i deal with this all the time especially at the gym.

For example, one lady asked me why I had disabled plates- my response- they give

them to people wiith disabilities.

another time-  another lady asked me why i had disabled plates when I could

walk. i told her that I have been able to walk since i was a year old.

I've had several people who did the " you don't look disabled " remark and mine

is- " you don't look like an idiot but you are "

I've had the " you're not disabled " comment and my response is either- where did

you go to medical school? or " oh, so you are a miracle worker and you are

wasting your time in this parking lot instead of curing people with cancer " .

I had one lady at the grocery store come over to me when I got out of my car and

said- " I hope you're disabled... " and my response was, or at least the beginning

of it was- " what kind of a mean person are you to want someone to be disabled...

The trick is to twist it around and make it about them. I did swear at one guy

once but he was a real jerk, he wanted the name and # of my doctor cos he wanted

to question his decision and then he called me disabled in the head. he got

sworn at in several languages.

The sad thing is that i have had two aerobic instructors who got mad cos i

wasn't working as hard as the rest of the class, or as one yelled, i wasn't

working my arms hard enough. neither is no longer employed at the facility.

also... last week the Parade section of the Sunday under Miss Manners addressed

the issue of self-righteous idiots who question people parking is disabled

parking spaces. She told them to mind their own business and addressed the

issued of invisible disabilities. I copied it and plan on keeping a few copies

in my car
