I find WW meetings are what keeps me going. Check your insurance sometimes they help out with the fees. Mine is after $150 in meetings they reimburse you. I really have to get there this week. If you have any questions feel free to email me?

I am no expert, but I think the weight comes off slower because you

are building muscle and losing fat at the same time (not necessarily

the same rate). So if you build 1 pound of muscle and lose 2 pounds

of fat the scale might show a net loss of 1 pound. But by gaining the

muscle you have increased your metabolism and will burn more calories

while resting.

With just doing WWs, you are losing fat, muscle and water. Hence the

scale will show a greater drop. But then you can quickly gain all

that weight back if you dont stay on the program.

BFL is just that...its for life. Its a lifestyle not a diet.

Huge difference.

On any low calorie, no exercise diet you're going to lose water, fat,

and muscle tissue. When you lose all three at once, the scale goes

down quickly, but you look basically the same. If you started out a

soft, squishy, pear shape, you stay a soft, squishy, pear shape as you

get smaller.

On Body for Life with the intense workouts, you lose FAT and you gain

muscle. So you lose major inches and totally reshape your body but the

scale may not do much. It's possible to get seriously smaller without

getting much lighter. Witness the fat and muscle comparison photo:

http://www.skwigg.com/fat_and_muscle.jpg

Both of those weigh 5 pounds, but one is tiny and sleek and one is big

and fluffy and dumpy. So, losing fat and gaining muscle will make a

major difference in the size of your thighs, but it might not have any

impact at all on the scale.

You have to ask yourself - Is my priority hitting some arbitrary scale

weight quickly? Or is my priority looking hot in a bikini?

Well... I think it's bc of the weight training... muscle weighs more than

fat of course, so on WW I was just losing fat and probably some muscle too

and it just fell off like crazy (35 lbs in 3 months)... With BFL, I can see

*maybe* losing that much FAT, but GAINING probably 10 pounds in muscle so it

seems like I would only be losing 25 pounds in 3 months... I think... he he

" If you started out a soft, squishy, pear shape, you stay a soft, squishy,

That was my EXACT experience... I looked JUST the same, only smaller... and

while that's great and all, I still had flubby arms, still had a stomach

pooch, etc... This (BFL) will totally help with all that!

And this is what I think about the scale and hitting a certain number...

I know that at my weight right now, it does NOT matter how much muscle I

have, I will not look how I want. I KNOW that in order to look how I want I

need to lose 20 pounds of fat a least... SSOOOO that's my biggest struggle

when the scale doesn't budge because I know it needs to at some point... but

I'm getting better about not letting the number on the scale shape my day

: )

Actually, I thnk at first it is more of a matter of you are KEEPING

what muscle you have on BFL.

Someone here said that the lowest points on WW will add up to about

1000 calories. That is not enough calories to maintain your muscles.

Weight will seem to 'fall off' doing this because muslces are dense

and heavy and the first thing your body wants to get rid of when it

perceives a famon.

On BFL we are trying to find a balance between loosing fat and

keeping/building muscle. That means the scale weight will change more

slowly, but the Body Fat % will be changing more quickly and your over

all health will be leaps and bounds better.

Now, I say all that, but don't get me wrong, I think WW is a great

program. Many people have lost a ton of weight and learned to eat a

more healthy diet with WW. But at the really low points you are

surely sacraficing muscle mass for lower scale weight.

Hi Loretta!

I go to WW every week (love the meetings and have made friends there) but

I follow BFL program which is pretty similar to their core program by the

way. Bottom line is I have lost almost 40 pounds now and I have dropped

from a size 20 to a size 10. I have lost over 35 inches over my body and

I can tell you I NEVER ever looked like this at my current weight of 171.

And trust me I've been on the diet roller coaster for years. Who cares

what the scale says I look way better (and wear 3 sizes smaller) then I

ever have at this weight. I still love WW as it provides a small group

environment that BFL does not. But BFL is a much better program then WW

at least in my opinion.

hi nancy! im sorry, i didnt mean to 'dis' WW... it is a good

program... the problem with it lies with me.

i did the flex plan a couple of years ago... it was right when the

core plan was introduced.

while i stayed within my points range and worked out, and lost 30

pounds (!), i also fell ill with pneumonia. i wasnt sure if the

sickness was made worse because of poor nutrition or not. i still

ate junk food on the program -- not all of the time, mind you, but i

really should have concentrated more on eating fruits/veggies/whole

grains/low fat protein while i was doing the flex plan instead of

worrying about how i could fit in my junk food!

i would really like to take a look at the core plan now that ive

become accustomed to eating healthier. i might actually be able to

do it now! i will have to join an online group in order to get a

look at the core food list and seriously consider it. or, if you

happen to have a copy of the core food list that you could email me,

then i would really appreciate it :)

besides the weighing/measuring/counting issues that i had with the

flex program, i had trouble trying to figure out the portion size and

points for things that i didnt have the calorie/fat/fibre counts for

(otherwise i would use my slider)... like a casserole or dish that

contains a bunch of ingredients. so i found myself avoiding anything

like that and sticking to things that i knew. however, that got to

be repetitive and boring, eating the same things all of the time.

however, this 'issue' would surely help me stick to the core plan and

not wander off into 'points counting' territory ;)

once i recovered from the pneumonia (which took months), i did not

resume the flex plan and began to gain back half of the weight that i

lost. im still trying to lose those re-gained pounds and am getting

frustrated....

Hi Carolyn,

I didn't take any offense at all! I know WW works great for some people and others don't like it, just like it works great for me but I don't like other systems. No big deal.

I laughed out loud about your trying to figure out how you could fit in your junk food! I still do that to some extent! I plan my meals and leave points over for "treats" then I don't feel like I'm depriving myself. I eat a generally healthy diet so I don't worry about the treats. I'm sure I need way more fruits than I get and more veggies too but I'm working on it... plus, I'm just about ready to start maintenance so I get more points then and that means I should (in theory anyway) feel even less "deprived" if I eat fruits and still have points for my treats! :-)

I don't have a copy of the core foods on my computer (there are about 4,000 and the book you get when you sign up gives you broad categories and some specific examples) but I emailed you 3 articles from the WW website about the core plan (explaining what kinds of foods you choose and why). If those are helpful that's great and if not, feel free to delete them! :-)

I hear you on the falling into eating just foods for which you know the point value and getting bored with those. I'm on the flex plan so I count points and this has been an issue for me too. The way I've learned to deal with those is to try and make a reasonable guess and then just make sure I have flex points and/or activity points available to cover me if I mess up or make sure I'm on the low side of points for the rest of the day. I also estimate high and that usually works well. I have especially learned to not obsess over it so much and to forgive myself if I do make a mistake and especially, to enjoy my food. If it is a casserole I'm having at a buffet at a friend's house I take smaller portions than I did pre-weight loss commitment and I really enjoy it (I've found I actually can eat less and feel quite satisfied than what I used to think I needed to eat). Then I look up casseroles or some of the ingredients I could identify in my WW stuff and take a reasonable guess and live with it. I also subscribe to the WW online site (www.weightwatchers.com) and use that for all my journaling plus it has great tools for figuring out points (points calculator and huge database of foods) and lots of other features I use too including message boards. You can post a question about points or whatever and someone can help you figure out the answer). Some of the features do cost to use but for me it is WELL worth the money (keep in mind too I'm lifetime and below goal so I'm not also paying for meetings but I did start my subscription when I was above goal and paying for meetings too). Here they've got coupons for a free month or more and I tried it out using that and ended up liking it well enough to pay for it, now it is a huge part of the way I manage my weight. For portion size, the book you get when you first join has some neat ways to help figure out how much something is (a fist = something, a deck of cards = something else, etc.) but honestly, I can't keep those straight so they don't work for me but other people love them.

I think, whatever method you end up using (WW or something else) it has to be something that you can use successfully and make it part of your life. I just weighed in today and am now down to the weight I was 16 years ago. I want to lose 1.6 more pounds just to be 1 pound below that. I don't have to, I look and feel great now but it just means something so I will do it and then go on maintenance. Sixteen years ago I had jaw surgery and could only eat liquids for over 2 months. I lost tons of weight and was the lowest of my adult life and looked great too. However, because I didn't really have anything to do with the weight loss it came back (plus a lot more over time and pregnancies). This time I wanted to be the one in charge and I am, completely, and it feels so incredibly good. I lost 30 pounds 4 years ago on WW, then gained 15 back (because I quit following the program because I didn't want to really) now I've not only lost that 15 but almost 10 more and this time is totally different. I'm now almost 40 pounds lighter than I was 4 years ago. I don't just want to look good and feel better, I want to stay this way. I have been totally committed to my success because I am totally worth it and my family is totally worth having a healthy me around too. I don't think I cared deep down that much before but maybe it was going through breast cancer that made it so much more important. I am very confident I can keep it off this time because it is so important to me to do so. I thought it was before too, now I KNOW it is. I lost the weight slowly but very steadily with very few gains and those just being less than half a pound a few times too so that actually gives me more confidence that I can keep it off. I think the attitude is the most important thing and any other tools you use are just that, tools. Getting frustrated, for me at least, was an important first step and is what got me back to WW meetings. Really deep down caring and really knowing that I and my family were worth it came later and was even more important for taking it off and keeping it off (I've been below goal since May and continued to drop more pounds because the top level goal, where I quit paying, was still too high for me).

Sorry if this was too long about WW and weight loss, especially for an exercise video group!! Can keep it short and on topic next time! :-) In the meantime, my best to you Carolyn, I hope you find what works for you and that you make it work well. If I can be of any support or encouragement feel free to email me privately too!

Back to exercise and weight loss now: just for full disclosure... I was not exercising much through most of my weight loss. I want to start again now because I see it as essential for my overall health and to help me maintain the loss (and be able to eat more fruits or treats and still stay within my point range)! :-)

Hi !

I just noticed I must have mistyped my first name when I wrote that first note! How funny! Anyway, it's just "" without an "e"! :-)

Hey Nancey or any other WW's out there:I would be interested in hearing more about the Weight Watchers program. Is is easy to do??

Depends on what you consider "easy." If you just want to lose weight, then it may or may not be, depending on how motivated you are, but if you want to really change your attitude towards eating and food and make positive habit changes for a lifetime then yes. It is based on healthy eating principles you can lose weight on and live with later plus there is tons of support available to you in reaching YOUR goals.

Is is working for you?

Absolutely. I've been lifetime since 1985. I've gained some of my original weight back twice but in Feb 2006 I changed my attitude 100% and focused primarily on health, not just "losing weight." I have lost 26 pounds and am now at the lowest weight I've ever been (l'm within the healthy weight range for my height). I look better than I have probably ever and feel so confident and strong.

Would you recommend it for someone who has about 15 - 20 pounds to lose?

15-20 is definitely fine! Much easier to lose than 30 or more too! I got myself back on the program 10 pounds above my goal weight (which was at the top of the weight range for my height). I've since gone 16 pounds below that and am now maintaining within a 5 pound range (and have been maintaining at that weight range for about 5 months). People with a lot to lose seem to have more "dramatic" stories but everyone is welcome and all are encouraged equally.

I am not sure I would be "into" weekly meetings. Do you think the program would still work if I joined, got the materials, went to a few meetings and then quit the meetings and just did it on my own??

Excellent question! I have found that for me, just reading the materials does NOT work. I tried that when I first joined and I did not stick with the program. I had no one to ask questions, no one to give me advice when I got stuck and no one to look to as role models and not a lot of support for my efforts (though people around me were "supportive" of my losing weight, they weren't much help. I did MUCH better when I attended meetings regularly. I was more committed to the program and myself too. The accountability, even just to myself, seems MUCH stronger when I attend meetings too. Research shows people generally do better losing and maintaining by attending meetings rather than doing it on their own (I can give you an actual research quote, just don't have it handy right now). I do not have to weigh in more than once a month since I'm lifetime but I still attend weekly meetings because I get so much motivation, advice, enthusiasm and encouragement from other members who really understand the challenges I face. We celebrate together and build each other up when things don't go so great too. You can also just sit there very quietly and simply absorb what you need without interacting very much. No one will force you to cheer or sob or anything else. I recommend trying a few different meetings if you can because you might find you fit better with a particular leader or a particular group more so than others.

All that said, there are others who have done GREAT on their own, not attending meetings. WW has an online option, especially for people for whom there isn't a local meeting that works for them. I use their e-tools and attend meetings but some people just access all the program materials online. There are awesome bulletin boards too for support, information, recipes, challenges, etc. (those are free to anyone, there are other features only available for a fee). Check out www.weightwatchers.com and look into the WW online option if you're interested in that.

Would be interested in any thoughts you might have. I think I need somehelp in determining "how much" food I need to eat

WW has two plans for this. One is a "points" system where food is given a point value based on calories, fat and fiber content and you eat whatever you want while staying within your daily points. There are great visuals for figuring out what a serving actually is (like a serving for a baked potato is about the length of a light bulb, not the super jumbo ones you get in restaurants). This is the most popular plan because it gives you boundaries but also allows you to eat anything you want as long as you don't go above your points allowance. There are also 8 Good Health Guidelines that you are encouraged to meet, making food choices that meet the guidelines and staying to your points.

The other plan is called "core" and you choose from a HUGE range of very healthy, very low-fat foods. You learn (with the program materials and from your leader and other members if you attend meetings) to recognize different levels of hunger and to eat to the point of satisfaction but not stuffing yourself. You can eat as much of the core foods as you need to be satisfied (and can eat non-core but count points for it, you have a weekly allowance for those). Some people find that scary, afraid they will be out of control, but the core foods are very dense and satisfying so as long as you pay attention to your body you are fine. (Stop, rest and assess is the key... While you're eating stop, take a rest and assess whether or not you're satisfied then eat more if you need to or just stop.) I have done both plans, recently switched to core, and both are easy to follow if you are committed to your own success.

and assistance making better food choices

The 8 Good Health Guidelines, which include exercise, are the basis of both plans. If you follow them, you will definitely be eating very healthy. I recently committed myself to following them very closely and love it! I'm trying to make them my focus instead of "losing" or "maintaining" weight. Weight loss and maintenance is a life-long journey, not a destination and this is the current "focus" of mine.

Full disclosure: I am attending an information/interview session in two weeks to discuss employment opportunities with Weight Watchers. My goal is to become a meetings leader (you usually start out as a receptionist and eventually train as a leader).

This may be more information than you ever wanted, but I hope you (and others) found it helpful. Please let me know if I can answer any other questions. Feel free to email me privately too, nancydewolf@....

lisa, i lost 25 pounds (or so) with weight watchers... but after i

lost the weight, i caught pneumonia and i stopped following the

program. when i recovered from that, i did not go back onto WW and

ended up gaining the weight back.

ive considered starting WW again, but am undecided if i want to or

not. im trying to apply what WW taught me (portion control and

reading labels, mainly) so that i dont have to count points (which

admittedly gets tiring after a while).

anyway, i wanted to tell you that i did not join WW or go to

meetings or any of that. most of the materials that you need can

be obtained from WW email groups, and the books that contain the

point counts and a slider for figuring out points counts can be

bought on ebay or even gotten for free from the email groups. what

i would do, is to first look through groups to find the WW

groups, join a few and then look through their 'files' section to

see what free info they provide. also, i find that WW leaders and

other people on the program are very helpful and will answer lots of

questions, supply materials and give lots of support.

i hope that this helps a bit and if you are serious about giving WW

a try, i might be convinced to go on the program with you if you

would like a buddy to help stay accountable... i would love to lose

15-20 pounds!

Carolyn,

Since you already know/like WWs, check out the WW core program, no point counting! www.weightwatchers.com has great boards for all kinds of info and advice too, great resource and free.

when I hit a platu, I dropped my first 60 lbs on core, in 9 months...

the last 10 or so took forever!

On Weight Watchers you can eat what ever you want as long as you do

it in moderation. But I knew I needed a little more structer than

that. That's why I love Core. You can eat lean meats veggies fruits,

fat free dairy whole wheat pasta whole grains, ie bailey, cous

cous...etc

I thout it was great! And if you make a dish out of all core food,

its core

ooo..and any broth based soups (with out noodles), I love ZOUP!!!!

Core was great to me!

I'll never forget this...My husband wanted to it make very clear that

he didn't want to be on the " diet " with me. - although he doesn;t

have to loose weight. He's 5' 8 " or so and is about 145 lbs soaking

wet....but any way I had to make two dinners a lot of the time....

I'll never forget the night I had made New York strps for dinner.. My

husband was so excited!! that is until I gave him his hot dog ha ha

ha... I said, well you didn't want to be on my diet, and we really

couldn't afford for both of us to eat new york strips every other

night... hee hee hee arn't I a stinker : )

That is hilarious!!! I've never made two dinners, my husband who is about the same size as your husband (but lighter actually) just had to eat a lot of the low points stuff. Maybe that's why he lost weight... hmmm, maybe he'll put on some weight with core (which would be good for him)!! :-)

(who ate just what she wanted for lunch and a snack, which were core foods, without measuring or counting points and loved it!)

Hi , I was just wondering how you're doing. I am doing Weight

Watchers and I have no idea of how many activity points LL breathing is.

Maybe someone else may know. Are you doing Flex or Core? Do you go to

meetings? I am pretty much eating the Core foods but doing it on my own.

There are a couple others on the list doing WW so maybe we can inspire

each other. The LL can only help!

Chris

Congratulations on taking matters into youro wn hands and doing what

needed done! I se a ton..no pun intended..know people complaining about backs,

hips, knees, and often diabetes as well, who are obviously 5--75-100 pounds

overweight, and just want to tell them deal with that first, that is

something you CAN control. I know it's harder for some than others, but we all

can do it, and c should, for so many reasons.

Good on you.

Hey, everyone!

It's been a long time since I posted. I had my third back surgery about a

year ago.

I joined Weight Watchers in September, and I've lost almost 55 pounds. I

only have a few more pounds to be in a normal BMI. I've been overweight

for 17 years beginning with my first pregnancy. I love Weight Watchers!

I sustained nerve damage in my leg after my back collapsed the second time

and again last year. I've been unable to exercise including walking for

exercise. I could walk around the house and the store for short distance

before the discomfort would get pretty bad.

I don't know if it's the weight loss or just time or a combination of

both, but I've been walking for 2 weeks now. I've built up to walking 23

minutes (1.36 miles). I feel great! My leg still has the nerve damage, and I

still " feel " it, but I don't have the same amount of discomfort at all. I'm

actually enjoying my walks.

I know I wouldn't be where I am now without the weight loss. People are

amazed I could lose the weight without exercising, and I wasn't hungry. If

any of you are in the same boat I was, I want to encourage you to try

Weight Watchers yourself. I know being able to walk again is going to do

wonderful things for my back not to mention just making me feel so much better

in

general.
