Dear Carol Ann,

I have the same problems as you do. Although I am 59 years old now. But when I

was 30, the orthopedist looking at my cervical spine CT said I had the neck of a

50 year old football player. Also I have diffuse developmental spinal canal

narrowing in both my neck and my lower back. So all the bone spurs that cause

spinal stenosis impinge on nerves and spinal cord much more easily. I've seen

3 spine doctors (all three said the nerve impingement was not enough to warrant

surgery and a 3 level fusion is not to be undertaken unless I had more damage),

been treated by 4 physical therapists, had multiple steroid epidurals and facet

joint injections, oral steroids, acupuncture, seen 2 pain doctors etc etc.

Finally I found an exercise that actually helped and it wasn't any of the neck

pts that showed me. It was when I had torn rotator cuffs in both shoulders that

a PT showed me an exercise he called fixing the shoulder blades that helped my

neck of all things.

This exercise strengthened the upper back and shoulder muscles that were

weakened from my hunched over posture. When I looked a my profile in a mirror, I

realized that this exercise realigned my neck so it wasn't forward all the time,

but squarely on my shoulders. Doing this exercise for 2-3 months and

consciously keeping my chest pushed out and my back straight resulted in a major

lessening of my neck pain. Also now I could lift my head off the pillow when I

was laying on my back. For a long time before my neck muscles in front had been

terribly weak and the back neck muscles so over taxed that they spasmed all the

time and could not heal.

I could tell people till I was blue in the face that posture and resulting

muscle weakness in upper back sets up the neck to suffer chronic pain after an

accident or acute neck strain. But no one listens except the receptionist at my

dentist's office, and she thanks me profusely every time I see her.

I finally did find a physical therapist, who concentrates on fixing the posture

and upper back muscle and shoulder strength, before ever doing direct neck

exercises. She is a professor of PT in Australia of all places. Here is a web

site with an interview of her.

http://www.physicaltherapycontinuingeducation.org/current-interviews/

(Her name is Grendolen Jull, PhD)

If you are interested I can give you instructions on how to do the exercise.

You also need the proper set-up which is two mirrors, one in back, like mirrored

wardrobe doors and one in front attached to a wall so you can adjust to see your

back reflected in the other mirror.

Or maybe you can find a PT who can help you do the exercises.

Email me directly if you like.

Good luck,

Rochelle

Carol Ann,

I am so sorry to hear that you are suffering. I don't know where you live,

but I would go to a neurologist. They have a different opinion on things.

At least to get another opinion.

I found, prior to my surgery, that acupuncture really helped with the pain.

I also went to a chiropractor and a PT, but acupuncture helped by far the

most.

I wish you all the best.

Dear Carol-Ann,

Neurologist's deal with some pain that deals with neuropathy, not usually with

arthritic diseases; that would be a Rheumatoid Dr--PMR, Fibro, shingles,

etc--and of course the neck and back pain would be the Orthopedic--

Carol Ann,

I think a neurologist could tell you if you are dealing with arthritis, but

would refer you to another type of doctor.

But as far as neck pain and headaches, I think a neurologist is a great place to

start.  I also had a neurologist do my neck surgery and 6 months later I am

much, much better.  I still have a little pain from time to time that an OTC

pain reliever can handle, but nothing compared to pain I did have.  I have had

several friends go to a neurologist for both neck and back pain, and find relief

though surgery by a neurologist.  I myself have been to several orthopedic and

neurologists, but when I found the doctor I felt could help me, I knew it.  Of

course before I had my surgery by a neurologist, I checked him out completely.

Everyone is different too.  Some have benefited from some treatments and other

people don't.  The idea is not to give up and continue to try everything until

you find a solution, or at minimum, relief.  I hope this helps.

One more thought if you give your location, maybe someone here can suggest a

doctor to you.

Carol Ann - As has been stressed repeatedly before, Neurologist or Orthopedist

is not the important thing, what is, is whoever you see is a spine specialist,

not a general orthopedic surgeon or neurologist...Both can be excellent, I have

had excellent surgeries and evsaluation from a Orthopedic Spine Specialist...but

you should get more than one opinion especially if the opinion you have is not

satisfactory to you.

Hoping you have pain free days.

hi all - I had cervical fusion C4-7 about 3 years ago and I now have more than

occasional headaches and neck pain...these are new! Meaning I did not have them

after the fusion until just recently. I also " hear " a lot of crackling in my

neck when I try to stretch it. I have DDD so my fear is " here we go again " in

that maybe another of the disks is going...I had to have the last surgery ion my

neck as I was losing use of my left hand and arm...none of that (yet!) but by

mid-day I am feeling lots of pain despite pain meds and I also get some

dizziness along with it when I try to stretch to relieve the pain. I remember

having the same feeling of never getting relief form stretching my neck prior to

the fusion - I have had three years of being pain free...just hoping this isn't

what I think it is...I know the next step if it gets worse or doesn't go

away..back to the spine surgeon...but I have to have a hip replacement this year

so I cannot even think about bringing this up to my wife! Anyone out there have

similar experience?

I had my first cervical fusion in 2003 and then started having same issues again

and did the next fusion in 2008 and then last year I got a spinal stimulator and

it was working fine until a few months ago and started having the same shoulder

and neck pain and tingling numbness in arm,. so went and had an epidural last

week.

Good luck.

Janet,

I experience salivary gland swelling down the neck, in front of my ears and

facial numbness, especially when I up my dosage of iodine. Drinking salt

relieves the pressure I feel. Here's a link to salivary glands

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salivary_gland Once I realized what this was I

was able to relax, back off on my dosage for a day or two and it went away.

Janet,¼ tsp salt is very small, the recommended is ½ tsp per day plus on food. That might help to begin with, plus the extra salt, magnesium and vit C as recommended. Are you taking Magnesium, Selenium, Vit C and Unrefined salt? You need these with your iodine. An increased heart rate could signal an adrenal stress. When this happened to me I would just increase my Magnesium, Vit C and Salt and that would take care of it. The product I took was a Vit C/Potassium/Magnesium/Calcium supplement called BalanCe from www.vrp.com I would just take a scoop of this product and it would take care of any heart palps - along with a 1/2 tsp Celtic Salt. If it was really bad I used Biotics Research Cytozyme AD (an adrenal glandular product). Don't panic.
