Hi to all!

I just wanted to check in and post. I read all the e-mails.

I got the MGB on March 12, 2001. I weigh in once a week on Saturdays. The

funny part is that I weigh myself on the weekend now and before the MGB I

would never do that because I always gained big time over the weekends!!

I weigh today 254 and am 6'2. I started at 298. I cannot believe that I

will need to move the big bar on the scale to 200 in the near future!!

Today was the first day in at least 6 years that I put jeans on. I went to

the never fit closet, that is full of smaller cloths, and pulled out 2 pairs

of jeans. Woweeeeee! I did not have to lay down to zip them up!

I can pretty much eat anything. I cannot believe how turned off I am to

French fries and crave salads and fresh fruit.

I would say my only challenge is the bathroom frequency with #2's. I go a

lot, especially in the middle of the night, and most of the time it is

runny. I have made in my panties 3 times. I thought I could make it to the

upstairs toilet and miss-judged. I have hemorrhoids, that I am trying to

keep under control.

I am on Prozac and have felt fine mentally since the surgery. I need to

start building my strength in my legs. I still feel like I am carrying a 90

pound sack in my tummy and butt and find it hard to get around. I have

noticed an improvement since I have lost 44 pounds.

I am very busy with work. I am a sales manager for two radio stations in

Philadelphia, so I manage to get around quite a bit. The job makes the day

fly and food is no longer the main event. I use to love to go out to eat

now I could careless and almost prefer eating soup at my desk.

That is all for now!

Re: Audra Canfield

Congratulations on falling off of that plateau! Wish I could fall off of

mine!

Please forgive me for getting nosey, but you mentioned swelling in your

legs. Did the Dr have any ideas as to why they were swelling? Mine are

both humongus by bedtime, and they HURT and itch. I know a duretic

would probably help, but I'm not sure that is a good idea. I don't see

my PCP for another 2 weeks and was wondering if there are any

vitamins or minerals that might help in the mean time.

Your hotel? Are you okay? I can't wait to see you guys there.

Romy, Sharon did go around and visit everyone, but you were so

liberal with the pain pump that you prolly don't remember :) Sharon

snuck in and had her surgery done while we were all down trying to

figure out the check in process. She was being wheeled out when I

was getting ready to go in. It was at that point I came a tensy bit

scared, by the way she was moaning :)

,

I, too, have had revision surgery (original fusion was in 1970 with Harrington

instrumentation T10 -L4) with instrumentation. My revision was accomplishes with

osteotomies at L3,4,5; 9 pedicle screws; 2 contoured rods and 4 hooks from T10

to the sacrum. I honestly do not " feel " any different now than I did for the 30

yrs. before the revision; that is to say, while I'm most certainly much

straighter now than I was before the Flatback was reversed, I can't feel any of

the instrumentation and I have never noticed any change in my mobility from

being fused to L4 to being fused into the sacrum.

Does anyone else " feel " their instrumentaion? And, does anyone else feel or hear

metal on bone? Call me curious...

All the best,

Beth

Elaine,

I'm glad you were able to have a CPM Machine at home and that it

helped you out. I'd love to slap my OS for saying that it wouldn't

help me out and subsequently, wouldn't prescribe one for me and I am

suffering the way I am now.

I'm happy for you Elaine.

I really believe the CPM machine was a major part of my recovery

going so well. It kept my knee from becoming stiff and there was no

pain using the CPM machine. I don't know why some doctors don't think

they do any good. I have heard a lot more good with using them than

bad. I am sorry you couldn't have one.

what's a CPM?????????????????

CPM stands for Constant Passive Motion. It is a machine that you put

your leg in and it moves oh so slowly keeping your knee moving and

bending to a slight degree. It can be adjusted to bend more as you can

bend more. Look it up on google and you can find a picture of it.

Hi Elaine,

I'm in the same boat as you. Both my PT & Surgeon don't believe in

CPM machines. Just like you I'm finding I have to work 3x as hard as

the people with them do. After 6 weeks I'm still only about 120

degrees and I have to fight for every degree. I had one after my last

surgeries and it really helped. I wonder why they feel is doesn't help?

Any doctor who say that they are not needed are soooo wrong it boarders

on law suit. I had knee surgery when I was 10 years old. That was

about fifty years ago. At that time I was in a long leg cast for two

or three months. When they removed the cast my tendons had shrunk and

I need six to eight weeks of PT to get them stretch out again. Plus

all my muscle had been lost and needed to be build back up. They did

not realize at the time that it would not hurt or effect the surgery if

my leg was free to move. Don't know how long CPM's have been around

but that is the way to go. It even encourages healing because it keeps

blood flow going.

So get them to get it or rent it on your own but do not do without it.

I'd give my eye teeth for 120 degrees at 6 weeks! I'm at 5-1/2 weeks and

96 degrees - every one of which was hard-won. But I'm gaining on it, and I

WILL get to fully functioning!

I did have a CPM machine on in the hospital, but didn't think to ask for

one at home. Interesting - I don't know that I would have requested it,

but maybe it would have helped. I still have quite a bit of swelling and

that seems to be part of the issue with the flexon of the knee.

Lindy, no a CPM isn't going to help a hip, because there really aren't a

lot of bending issues with a hip, as there are with a knee. So don't worry

yourself about that one!
