Guest guest
A good bedside manner tells you a lot about the doctor. Is he respectful of you? Does he listen to what you have to say? Does he answer all your questions to your satisfaction? Does he take the time to explain to you what is going to happen or what has already happened? I think a bedisde manner tells us a lot about how he/she operates in the operating room. Just my opinion Janice Fusion Surgery L4/L5 Surgeon? I have been recommended for this surgery in Toronto and would appreciate hearing who are the best orthopaedic surgeons for this type of surgery. I tried looking at ratemymd.com but people there are talking about wait times for appointments and bedside manner which I don't think matter. What I'm concerned about is the quality of the surgeon's work. Anything you can suggest would be helpful. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ No virus found in this incoming message. Guest guest
I agree that bedside manner indicates a level of care. However, many doctors who are skilled surgeons don't necessarily excel at  " human " skills and I don't want to base a doctor solely on that.  Do you happen to know of any surgeons? Guest guest
I base a surgeons ability to do his job by his track record. Word of mouth is the best reference you can get if you can talk to people he/seh has operated on before you. I also go to the medical board website to see if they have been in trouble with the board or been cited for something bad or ever had his/her license revoked for any reason. You can't be to safe when it comes to your spine. I used Dr. Haider in Riverside it's called the spine center he and his colleauges are very talented and thet have operated on me twice once a fusion then 5 years later they removed the hardware. Both surgeries were complete success's I had 3 surgeries prio to the last 2 and they all were completely successful. I have had a total of 5 back surgeries and each one was a complete success. I just kept hurting myself every 5 to 10 years starting at 20 years old to 5 years ago wehn I was 55. I have no pain due to the drug I take daily it's methadone and I am completely pain free with no side effects. Janice Fusion Surgery L4/L5 Surgeon? Guest guest
Thanks for your input. I will check the medical board records. Can you tell me where Riverside is? If I ask the surgeon for contact numbers of previous patients, do you think he would give it to me....is that normal practice? Guest guest
Hi: I just realized that you are located in the United States. The medical system is very different here in Canada. I thought this was a Canadian group. Much of the information you are sharing is applicable but some is not. Since health care is public, it is much more difficult to access information about doctors since we do not pay in any way for surgery. We do get choice as to whom we go to, but access to information is not as plentiful. Guest guest
I'm sorry Ellen I didn't know you were not here in the U.S. I pay big money for health insurance but the advantage I have is that I can go to any doctor anywhere in the world to get care if I want to but I know the specialists in my area so I dont' need to go far. Sometimes I use a famous hospital and their doctors it's called Loma Univ. Medical Center it's about 40 miles from me but well worth the drive. I get to see the top specialists. They specialize in transplants for children and adults. My 22 year old grand daughter will have a kidney transplant there one day. Her kidneys failed when she was 10 but they have so far been able to keep them working enough so they put off the transplant until they completely fail. Her sister is the match. Sorry I got carried away. Can you go outside Canada to get medical care? Will they pay for it? Do you like the health care system there? Janice Fusion Surgery L4/L5 Surgeon? Guest guest
Hi Janice: We can only get health care within Canada. However, if a procedure is not available here and the government approves, they sometimes send you to an American hospital but it is highly unusual. We can go to any medical facility within our province (state). I have always liked the Canadian medical system. We do not pay out of pocket for doctor visits, MRIs, etc. My daughter needed surgery to remove a nevus which was on her skin and can lead to skin cancer. She was operated on by the top surgeon at the leading children's hospital in Toronto and we didn't pay a dime. It takes a lot of the worry out of life. No matter how ill, for how long, you receive care. Everyone is treated equally. I'm sorry to hear about your granddaughter and I wish her good health.  What type of surgery did you have on your back? Guest guest
I had 3 laminectomys then I had to have a fusion then I had the metal removed. My spine weakened after 3 surgeries in almost the same place in my spine. It was L-5 S-1 the one that goes bad on almost everyone it the same also. I would have been fine when it was done the first time if I had listened to my doctor but I was very young (23) when they did the first surgery. I suffered almost 3 years before they fixed my back. They hesitated because I was so young and I did not know what I did to hurt my back to begin with. I woke up one morning with a sore back and by dark I was in the hospital screaming for help for the pain. I went through hell in those days. I also had a baby right in the middle of it all. I had 3 children under 5 and I was in a wheel chair for 5 months before they operated after she was born. The doctor didn't want to do a myelogram they are so dangerous but he finally told me that he couldnt' wait any longer so they did the myelogram at 6 in the evening and operated at 6 the next morning. I stayed 8 days and went home to care for my family as none of my family would help. It's a long story. I pay about 500 a month for health care but I can go to the best with that insurance. Guest guest
Because I now have Arachnoiditis nad the scar tissue was growing around the screws and rods in my spine making it painful so he took the metal out except for one little piece of a screw that broke off in because the surgeon couldn't get it out once it broke off in the bone. But right after surgery I was great. Hopefullthe methadone will dothe job for the rest of my life. Janice Fusion Surgery L4/L5 Surgeon? Guest guest
I know this email is a little dated now, but I did want to chime in with a slight disagreement. While it would be against privacy laws for a surgeon to randomly give out names and contact information for former surgical patients, the surgeons I have spoken with maintain a list of former patients who have agreed to have their contact information given out to potential surgical patients. However, we can assume that the surgeons only ask patients who had the best outcomes to be on this list, so it is not a true representation of the typical outcome and opinions of their former patients. For a more unbiased perspective, I went hunting on the internet for former patients of the surgeons I was considering, chatted with several of them online, and used that as one component when making my decision between two excellent surgeons I found. Guest guest
great idea ! When i had my hip resurface with Dr. Amstutz. i helped people from all over the US who came to CA to get the surgery done with him. I went to the hospital to be there on the day of their surgery...I went with my friend also who had two anterior replacements with Dr. Matta, . Dr A. had a list of patients you could contact but we all found eachother on the surface hippy board at . It is such a great way to exchange info! Good and bad! -- Re: Fusion Surgery L4/L5 Surgeon?
