Guest guest
Hi Everyone: I went to an immunologist here in New Mexico where I am relocating to just to touch base and establish myself as a new patient. I had a long and very interesting conversation with him with regards to Xolair. The reason for the black box warning is this: People who have allergic asthma do very well on Xolair. Xolair tames the IgE in blood and lowers the allergic response to triggers. Some people, who have been on the Xolair for extended periods (1 yr. or more, who have never reacted to the Xolair) are now having an allergic response to the actual Xolair that is being injected. This is due from the fact that Xolair is a foreign substance going into the bloodstream and with that being the case, the IgE is now identifying it as a foreign substance and reacting to the actual Xolair. This is the very first time that ANYONE has explained this to me in terms that I understood. He is still requesting that I stay 2 hours for the first 2 times I see him and then if no reactions, I can leave after 30 minutes, with an Epi-pen in hand. I still am not happy discontinuing the home injections, but I can live with the 30 min. waiting room protocol. Each doctor will have their own protocol, this just happens to be his for his office.
