Homeopathic medicine is very forgiving, but there are some precautions you can take in order to make it more effective. The short list of substances below tends to have an antidotal effect (but not always) on Homeopathic medicines, so anything on this list is best avoided - COFFEE - (You may have decaffeinated coffee or ordinary tea). Avoid anything containing caffeine e.g. Lucozade or Coca-Cola. Energy drinks tend to contain caffeine so they are best avoided also. PAINKILLERS - Some painkillers contain caffeine so they also need to be avoided, but there are plenty of painkillers that do not contain caffeine and these can be used safely. The brand names of painkillers such as Syndol, Solpadeine, Cojene and Phensic all contain caffeine. MENTHOL / CAMPHOR containing products such as Vick, Karvol, Vapo Rubs have an adverse effect on Homeopathic medicine so its safer not to use. EUCALYPTUS - Same considerations as Menthol / Camphor above. Ralgex and Oil of Wintergreen are some examples. MINT / PEPPERMINT - As found in toothpaste, some sweets, chewing gum etc. will also antidote Homeopathic medicine. How should Homeopathic medicine be taken? The tablets should be dissolved under your tongue or sucked slowly in a clean mouth. Therefore, avoid eating, drinking or smoking for at least 10 minutes either side of taking your medicine. Unused tabletsHomeopathic medicines have a long shelf life but they must be stored correctly.Store in a dark place, away from strong smelling substances, e.g. "Vick" in the bathroom cupboard, or perfumes in the dressing table. Also store away from microwave ovens, TV. sets etc.Handle the tablets as little as possible. Constitutional TreatmentIf you are having Constitutional treatment, please do not take any Homeopathic medicines you may keep at home without first checking with your Homeopath. You may interfere with the course of treatment by doing so. What to do if ... You inadvertently drink coffee etc. - DO NOT PANIC (its too late to change it), but please remember to mention it at your next consultation. You develop an acute ailment between treatments (e.g. colds, flu, infection etc) - If you feel help is needed our Emergency Online Clinic can help very quickly. In any case Aspirin and Paracetamol may be taken safely during Homeopathic treatment for minor ailments, headaches etc. Please be aware that Aspirin and Aspirin based products are not recommended for infants and young children. If you need dental treatment - If you are being treated constitutionally, please ask your dentist not to use mint toothpaste. How many tablets? Constitutional treatment - Your Homeopath will have calculated the correct dosage for you very carefully and the correct number of tablets dispensed in order to achieve the required effect. Usually, you will run out of tablets some considerable time before your next consultation but occasionally, and in certain circumstances, you may be prescribed tablets right through to your next consultation. Self medication - If you are self treating, the dosage and frequency will depend on many factors but in general the severity of the problem will determine these answers. As an example you would probably repeat the dose hourly for a young child with high fever or a person in severe pain.If the same person has ongoing arthritic pain, you would probably medicate twice daily for a few days at a time.If you remember the pace and the urgency of the symptoms you will arrive at the right dosage. Guest guest
Nice write up. My favorite homeopathic remedy is arnica. I never was too interested in homeopathy until I went backpacking for a week with a friend who had some. She had been hiking for 3 months along the entire applachian trail whereas I had been playing xbox and she walked me into the ground leaving me a torn and humbled shred of a human being. The arnica cream applied externally didn't do jack for me, but the little pills taken internally did wonders to lift one from a morass of pain and suffering. Not only did it help my knees but also my sore shoulders. For herself she liked the cream better. Since that trip arnica has a place in my field kit. Just used some yesterday on a friend who was suffering from overworking herself getting firewood stacked. Since I dislike being dependant on purchased remedies, I use the " hidden secret of homeopathy " . (It's not my trick, read about it from an old British homeopathic teacher's writings). Take one of the homeopathy pills and dissolve it in a glass of water. Then one pounds the glass on the table a bunch of times. Different people write different amounts, I've seen everything from 4 to 100 times. The idea is one is energetically restructuring the water to that of the homeopathy remedy and there are a bunch of ways to do it. I recommend reading up on the process so that one at least understands the theory before doing it. The water in the glass becomes your new dose (so arnica montana 30C basically becomes arnica montanna 31C). This is called potentialization and is pretty much how the remedies are created in the first place. So once you have a glass of potentialized water, you take a tablespoon of that as your dosage. One tube of pills lasts a LONG time following this procedure. Firewood girl last night got 1 spoonful every 20 minutes or so. It wasn't until the 3rd dose that she said, " I think that is doing something, I'm not as sore. " Finally, a naturopath shared a story about her homeopathic teacher. On a wilderness trip his son came down with something. The homeopath noticed the remedy he needed was in plant form right there at the campsite so he picked a few leaves and put them in a nalgene bottle with water. He then potentialized the mix by shaking (this guy used the 100 count) the bottle. Eventually he had the medicine his son needed, who of course promptly got well as the family continued on it's trip. Guest guest
What about using water that has already been energized instead of pounding the glass? We use one of those thingys that swirls the water for 9 mintues. Supposed to simulate water at the bottom of a waterfall for energy. Guest guest
You could, but you won’t know then just *what* energy is in the water, and you still have to pound the glass, because succussing is the proper and accepted way devised by Hahneman to create remedies. Homeopathic pharmacies have a machine that they stick the container in (kind of like a paint can shaker) which succusses the remedy and potentizes it. But it’s important to use the purest water available because the remedy has its own energy to impart to the water. Homeopathy is all about vibration. (I believe, however, that making a liquid remedy out of a 30C dry dose turns it into an LM remedy, in accordance with the 6th Organon teachings. Supposedly has less chance of aggravations than a dry dose. I’ve never had an aggravation with a 30C dry dose, but would make an LM remedy if it wasn’t an absolute emergency to get the remedy into the person quickly…as in Arnica. If I fall or get a physical shock to the system, I’ll take a dry dose of 30C rather than make up an LM remedy. However, if I had been hiking or working out – more of a long-term ache/pain kind of thing – I’d probably make an LM remedy and take a teaspoon every hour or so. Acute prescribing has much more leeway than constitutional prescribing, and LM remedies are very good for constitutional prescribing.) Guest guest
My favorite homeopathic remedy is arnica. I'm still laid up with my fractured vertebrae. Only relief I get is laying down. Today I bought some arnica and am going to start on that. It's used for trauma to the spine so I"m crossing my fingers. I also got some hypercium which is for damage to nerves caused by injury. I'll keep you posted on any changes.
