Guest guest
DON'T GET THE STUFF AT THE POOL PLACE ... YOU HAVE TO BE CAREFUL AND MAKE SURE YOU'RE GETTING THE FOOD GRADE TYPE OR YOU CAN KILL YOU PETS IF THEY INGEST THE WRONG KIND. kitcurtin <kitcurtin@...> wrote: DE is also available from plant nurseries, swimming pool supplystores, and some hardware stores. Guest guest
Hi Suzi, What do they do to the food grade to make it that way? Personally, I can't imagine the ingestion of any type. Including ...I always wear a mask and keep pets away when putting on the lawn for fleas. The reason the DE works is that it is made up of diatoms...tiny skeletons of sea creatures. They literally slice up/clog the exoskeletons of insects and cause them to dehydrate. I would not put it in contact with delicate mucous linings of internal organs. I know I've read it's OK...but I'm skeptical...it's not recommended for people....hmmmm. I'd use other herbs....like Green Black Walnut, Cloves, Wormwood, Oregano, Pumpkin seeds, etc. Backup research advised. Guest guest
You cannot use the DE bought at swimming pool supply stores because it has been chemically treated and is poisonous; I would also shy away from any bought at a hardware store. Make sure the DE you are buying is for human consumption. There are different kinds out there! Will send more info as soon as I find the article … L. -----Original Message----- From: health [mailto:health ] On Behalf Of kitcurtin Sent: Tuesday, July 26, 2005 3:31 PM To: health Subject: Re: Fleas.....DE DE is also available from plant nurseries, swimming pool supply stores, and some hardware stores. Guest guest
Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth. Contains less than ½ percent of Crystal & Silicon! This is totally organic and safe for your animals to eat and also for your plants or flowers. It is a long lasting, effective powder the insects can not build up resistance. Recommended for use on slugs, mexican bean beetles, aphids, grasshoppers, and many other crawling insects both indoors and outdoors. Diatomaceous Earth does not lose its strength as long as it is present; it does need reapplied after a rain. Insects do not build up resistance because it is not a poison. It is mined in the southwest from skeletal remains of single celled aquatic plants called diatoms. When milled, these dust like particles are covered with microscopic, razor sharp daggers. When soft bodied insects crawl on the plants that have been dusted with Diatomaceous Earth the sharp daggers penetrate their skin causing dehydration and death. Many insects will eat the Diatomaceous Earth causing the same effect on the inside, which is certain death! Diatomaceous Earth clings to plants best when damp for dew or light rain. It is also a great source of trace minerals for your animals. If given to your animals, it will kill any worms or parasites the animal may have. Diatomaceous Earth can be mixed with their feed at the rate of 1/2 ounce per day. Diatomaceous Earth can be used to protect your stored grains. Just add 7-10 lbs. to each ton of grain as it is conveyed into the storage The kind you get like at the pool places and some nurseries has been heat treated and does not work the same way as food grade DE. kitcurtin <kitcurtin@...> wrote: I know I've read it's OK...but I'm skeptical...it's not recommendedfor people....hmmmm.
