Hi,

I sympathise with you greatly..

I have had psoriosis for 15 years, just yesterday was diagnosed with pa,

although I suspected for a long while that I had it nobody wanted to listen to

me.

Telling me " Oh don't even think about it, you dont want that, it's a nasty one "

Unbelievably painful, I literally wake every morning yelling and ummm swearing

coz I cant move my arms with the pain.

Yea same prob here, no-one seems interisted in the disease.

I have had my hair coming out for oh must be a year now,

tried many many things..I guess the best I had is cocois ointment followed by

diprosalic scalp application, only drawback being it has to be applied daily or

it's back straight away and can be a bit tedious to do as it can take a couple

of hours to apply.

I too have thought about trying alternative, coz I'm just so fed up of being

fobbed off with endless creams ointments and lotions that do nothing.

I have just managed to get Dovobet ointment after being refused it on the

grounds that its too expensive, hoping that will do something...if it doesn't

then I dont know whats next!

I guess the hardest bit is making people listen to you, it sure is here.

Wishing you well and good luck.

Jackie

[ ] Loss of hair

I have had arthritis for several years and none of the standard

treatments had any effect. This summer I went to a new

rheumatologist and he diagnosed it as psoriatric arthritis....have

been having a " flare up " since midsummer. Had toenails and

fingernails break and shatter , now my scalp is painful and hair

falling out! The standard psoriasis meds seem to make it worse. Am

now considering alternative medicine such as reflexology, and natural

medications. My doctors seem to have little knowledge and/or

interest in this disease. Has anyone else had these problems?

My doc is supportive of the natural treatments that i have tried, although

these have been relativly few. I have heard a lot of people say

reflexology, massage, acupuncture, and acupressure have been helpful for the

arthritis. I have had some help from alfalfa for the arthritis and tanning

and vitimin E for the psoriasis. If you can find Vitimin E in gel form,

spread that on the psoriasis and it is so soothing! If you cnat find it, use

the largest geltabs you can find and spread it on the plaque areas. Tea

tree oil helps too, although it may be a bit strong if you have sensitive

skin, so mix about 1/2 to 1 oz in a 16 oz bottle of uncented lotion.

Applying lotion or vitimin E on the PS before tanning helps a ton too!

Also, watch the diet. Carbs, unnatural sugars, alcohol, caffine, and food

dyes may all be trigger foods for the arthritis.

You say that none of the " standard treatments " had any effect. What

meds were these? Later on, you say: " the standard psoriasis meds seem

to make it make it worse. " And what were these meds? And then,

lastly, " My doctors seem to have little knowledge and/or interest in

this disease. "

I'm sure most members have experienced these sentiments. I know that

for me, there have been times when it seemed that the meds weren't

doing their job; in retrospect, it was probably an " sub-flare "

increase in disease activity. As for sub-par docs--fortunately, I've

always lived in cities large enough to have a choice of

rheumatologists; I fire any doc who doesn't know more than I do.

I am sorry to hear the frustration in your words - it is clear you are

feeling that you've no place else to go. However,if your arthritis pain is

affecting your ability to function normally (because of pain or limited mobility

or

both) it is time for you to get on one of the DMARDS (MTX, Arava) or biologics

(Enbrel, Humira). These are meds that provide at least partial relief to many,

many people. The point of these meds is not to wait until your condition is

worse to take them, but to take them now to slow the progression of the

disease. Perhaps you need to have a long chat with your rheumy to ensure that

he or

she understands the degree to which PA is affecting your life NOW and ask

why you can't be on the next level of treatment before more permanent damage is

done. I used to be " stoic " with my doctors (stupid, I know), but I finally

realized that they are not mind readers and can only know the reach of my

symptoms if I tell them about every ache, pain and frustration. Lastly, you

will

probably know if a new medicine is working within 6 months. There is no reason

to stay on a med that isn't helping.

Wishing you wellness,

Kathy

<< The rheumatologist is

one of two in this area who is Board certified. He says he has done

all he can for the time being and will work with my GP until I have

a " worsening " in my condition. I have had this disease since

childhood and have the sinking feeling that it is not going to get

better! It has taken over my life! >>

Some time back we discussed this so when I came across it I thought I would post these other ideas.

Information on Hair loss remedies, Hair loss prevention and Hair loss causes Although hair is not essential to life, it is of sufficient cosmetic concern to provoke anxiety in anyone when it starts thinning, falling, or disappearing. To a woman, the sight of a comb or brush covered with lost hair can cause intense mental strain. Hair is formed in minute pockets in the skill called follicles. An upgrowth at the base of the follicle, called the papilla, actually produces hair when a special group of cells turn amino acids into keratin, a type of protein of which hair is made. The rate of production of these protein 'building blocks' determines hair growth. The average growth rate is about 1.2 cm per month, growing fastest on women between fifteen to thirty years of age.

More on Loss of Hair : Symptoms, Causes, Remedy, Diet, Other suggestions

Hair loss Symptoms

Lose hair found after combing, bathsSeeing hair on your clothes, after you comb, bald patches appearing gradually, receding hairline. Symptoms are pretty obvious for hair loss!

Hair Loss Causes

Lack of vitamins, inadequate nutritionThe most important cause of hair loss is inadequate nutrition. Persons lacking in vitamin B6 lose their hair and those deficient in folic acid often become completely bald. But the hair grows normally after the liberal intake of these vitamins.

Stress, Prolonged Illness, unclean conditionsOther important cause of hair loss are stress such as worry, anxiety, and sudden shock, general debility caused by severe or long standing illnesses like typhoid, syphilis, chronic cold, influenza, and anaemia; an unclean condition of the scalp which weakens the hair roots by blocking the pores with the collected dirt; and heredity.

Hair Loss Remedies, Hair loss prevention

Treatment for Hair Loss using Rubbing of ScalpA vigorous rubbing of the scalp with fingers after washing the hair with cold water is one of the most effective among the several home remedies for the prevention and treatment of hair loss. The scalp should be rubbed vigorously till it starts to tingle with the heat. It will activate the sebaceous glands and energise the circulation of blood in the affected area, making the hair grow healthy.

Hair Loss home remedy using Amla OilAmla oil, prepared by boiling dry pieces of amla in coconut oil, is considered a valuable hair tonic for enriching hair growth. A mixture of an equal quantity of fresh amla juice and lime juice, used as a shampoo also stimulates hair growth and prevents hair loss.

Treatment for Hair Loss treatment using LettuceLettuce is useful in preventing hair loss. A mixture of lettuce and spinach juice is believed to help the growth of hair if taken to the extent to half a litre a day

Hair Loss home remedy using AmaranthAmaranth is another valuable remedy for hair loss. Its fresh leaf juice should be applied to the hair. It will help the growth of the hair and keep it soft.

Hair Loss treatment using AlfalfaThe juice of alfalfa, in combination with equal quantities of carot and lettuce juice, taken daily, also helps the growth of hair to a remarkable extent. The combination of these juices is rich in elements which are particularly useful for the growth of hair. While preparing alfalfa juice, the leaves of the plant may be used when they can be obtained fresh.

Hair Loss treatment using MargosaThe leaves of the margosa tree are also beneficial in the treatment of hair loss. If hair has been falling or has ceased to grow it should be washed with the decoction of neem leaves. This will stop hair from falling and stabilise its blackness. It will also make the hair longer and kill lice and other infesting insects.

Home remedies for Hair Loss using Mustard Oil and Henna LeavesMustard oil, boiled with henna leaves, is useful for healthy growth of hair. About 250 ml of mustard oil should be boiled in a tin basin. About sixty grams of henna leaves should be gradually put in this oil till they are burnt in the oil. The oil should then be filtered using a cloth and stored. Regular massage of the head with the oil will produce abundant hair.

Treatment for Hair Loss using Coconut MilkThe application of coconut milk all over the scalp and massaging it into the hair roots is also beneficial in the treatment of hair loss. It nourishes the hair and promotes hair growth. Coconut milk is prepared by grinding the coconut shavings and squeezing them well.

Hair Loss treatment using Lime-Pepper SeedsCertain home remedies have also been found beneficial in the treatment of patchy baldness. The most valuable of these remedies is the seeds of lime and black pepper, ground together to get a fine paste. This paste applied on the patches, has a mildly irritant action. This increases blood circulation to the affected area and stimulates hair growth. This paste should be applied twice a day, for a few weeks.

Hair Loss treatment using LiquoriceThe paste of liquorice, made by grinding the pieces in milk with a pinch of saffron, is another valuable remedy for patchy baldness. This paste should be applied over the bald patches at night before going to bed.

Hair Loss treatment using OnionOnion has also been found beneficial in patchy baldness. The affected part should be rubbed with onions morning and evening till it is red. It should be rubbed with honey afterwards.

Hair Loss treatment using Pigeon PeaA fine paste made from pigeon pea or red gram can also be applied regularly on bald patches for beneficial results.

Hair Loss treatment using Other RemediesDaily application of refined coconut oil, mixed with lime water and lime juice on the hair, prevents hair loss and lengthens it. Application of the juice of green coriander leaves on the head is also considered beneficial. Washing the hair with a paste of cooked black gram and fenugreek lengthens the hair. Regular use of castor oil as hair oil helps the luxuriant growth of the hair.

Hair loss prevention diet

Well balanced food intakeThe healthy condition of the hair depends, to a very large extent, on the intake of sufficient amounts of essential nutrients in the daily diet. Persons with a tendency to lose hair should take a well-balanced and correct diet, made up of foods which, in combination, should supply all the essential nutrients. It has been found that a diet which contains liberal quantities of seeds, nuts, grains, vegetables and fruits would provide adequate amounts of all the essential nutrients. Each food group should roughly form the bulk of one of the three principal meals. These foods should, however, be supplemented with certain special foods such as milk, vegetable oils, honey, wheat germ, yeast and liver.

Other hair loss prevention treatment

Proper cleaning of the hair is essential.Proper cleaning of the hair, and rubbing of the scalp with a towel after a hairwash, are necessary.

  • 5 years later...

Our son has been out of his Doc band for 4 weeks now. He has a little spot about the size of a dime where he had hair loss. this was a spot that was raised and I believe the hair loss was due to friction. It is coming back... slowly, but honestly we are so happy with the results I'm not too worried about it.
