I remember my grama always had a container of vegetable peelings, apple cores, and coffee grounds on the kitchen counter and everyday they got emptied onto the compost pile in the backyard. Don't remember it ever stinking, but maybe it did and we just never noticed because things didn't all have to smell "good" back then (1950's).

Her egg shells didn't go into the compost until after they had sat in a jar covered in water for about a week and then the water was poured onto the house plants.

I also remember she always had a cup of bacon grease on the back of the stove for frying things.
