Guest guest
What is the itching from? What does she feed him?.. Is it dry skin or mange, ringworm, etc.? Here are some suggestions without knowing more Itchy Skin from Allergies: Give your pet a 10 minute cool bath to relieve itching. For further soothing, you may also add colloidal oatmeal (Aveeno®) to the bathwater. For dogs with itchy feet, fill the tub with enough cool water to cover their feet, dissolve a couple cups of Epsom salts in the water, and soak the dog's feet for 5-10 minutes. Be careful not to let them drink the water. Aloe and Oatmeal Shampoo Giving your dog Benedryl may also help. 1 to 2 mg per pound body weight every 8 hours. If you suspect a deficiency of essential fatty acids you can supplement the diet with 1 teaspoon to 1 1/2 teaspoons (no more) per pound of dry food - oils (flax, olive, safflower, corn, soybean, or cottonseed oil are good). May take a month or 2 to see improvement.Anne Bird <irishfox@...> wrote: A friend of mine took her dog to an Allopathic vet. He has pain and stuff from itching. Guest guest
I was wondering what these dogs are eating, as well. If it is beef get them off! There are so many dogs allergic to beef and I'm sure it's because of all the hormones and whatever they pour into those poor animals. It is all stored in the muscle and guess what, that's what meat eaters eat - the muscle. Shari
Guest guest
Anne, Where in CO? Know of Colorado Barfers list? I'm close to Denver. Yes, dog could be allergic to corn/wheat....this BARF diet has worked great. I am part of a coop where we order from Redbird monthly. Well worth it and cheap too! Flaxseeds-- try coffee grinder for grinding. I prefer make fresh each time. Takes only a few seconds, not minutes. I wonder also just for now since olive oil is very healing, to massage lightly some into the dogs skin. I also give my dogS a barley/alfalfa we sell...dry form....but they still get the oil. Have you given the dog just a little flax to start and then build way up.... You are thinking pain is associated with dry skin? carolAnne Bird <irishfox@...> wrote: Maybe dog allergic to corn or wheat too? Flaxseeds sound like a good try. We are in dry Colorado country too. carol ## Some dogs are very allergic to Flax Seeds and that is why I have her give Skippy fish body oil. Guest guest
Still thnking I would not discount the flaxseeds or even BARF diet. At least more options then you had before. carolAnne Bird <irishfox@...> wrote: Thank you so much for this info, I am forwarding it to the person who is having such a terrible problem. Anne ----- Original Message ----- From: pearlmoon health Sent: Monday, June 27, 2005 9:26 AM Subject: Re: Doggie Pain Anne There is a great shampoo out for dogs with skin allergies. It's called "Allermyl" and it's for dogs and cats. It's made by "Virbac Animal Health". You should be able to order it from any vet's office or on that PetMed site. I always felt safer ordering it from my vet though. It's a non-steroid, anti-inflammatory shampoo for skin allergies. I used it on my dog who had such terrible skin allergies. He would lose some of his fur and have sores from constant scratching and dandruff too. No dog shampoo would help no matter what. Once I tried this I noticed a "Big" difference after the first bath. I just kept useing that and his skin kept getting better, not to mention he felt better too. More comfortable. It can be expensive but well worth the price since I loved my boy. Hope this will help that poor little fur baby. If you can't get hold of any then let me know and I'll try to get some form my vet. It can run about $18.00 to $24.00 a bottle. I know, that's a lot but I'm sure that doggie is well worth it. Lynn
Guest guest
Not cod liver oil, though, as it mainly contains Vitamin A, which is readily available from a raw diet. Fish body oil or wild salmon oil contain the EFAs which *may* be necessary to supplement. Guest guest
Carol, I have been feeding RAW since 1997 but the info was not for me as I have no skin or health problems with my pack. I believe I am right about Flax Seeds and will stick with that. I have seen added flax seeds add problems and only recommend fish body oil or cod liver oil as they are bio-available. Thanks for your help though.
